In this post I will show you 3 of the most enchanting hidden places in Mexico, all of which are located in Huasteca Potosina. I doubt you have heard of all of them. But if you have, I’m certain they are on your bucket-list.
Allow me to introduce, Huasteca Potosina.
“La Huasteca” as it is known in Mexico, is a geographical and cultural area located along the Gulf of Mexico, starting at the State of Monterrey and ending in Veracruz. It is the region in which the indigenous Huastec people lived when their ancient civilization was at its peak.
To this day the Huastec people still celebrate their cultural traditions passed down from their ancestors. This includes their unique style of song and dance, along with religious festivals such as Xantolo aka “Day of the Dead”.
Below I have listed my 3 favorite destinations in Huasteca Potosina, they may not be as popular as your typical Mexican beach town, but trust me, they are wonderful.
The Surrealist Garden of Edward James
Also known as “Las Pozas”. It’s creator Edward James was born in 1907. James was a British poet known for his patronage of the surrealist art movement. Las Pozas garden includes more than 80 acres of natural waterfalls and lush jungle interlaced with towering Surrealist concrete sculptures. The goal was to create the Garden of Eden and James spent more than $5 million on its construction. To fund his creation, he sold his Surrealist art collection at an auction.

Tamul Waterfall
This waterfall is the highest in the State of San Luis Potosi towering 344 ft above the Tampaón River. The Gallinas river plunges into the Santa Maria river forming the Tampaón river. As you paddle up, seeing the intense colors and hearing the noise this water creates is truly a remarkable experience.
Cave of Swallows
This giant open air vertical cave has an elliptical mouth 160′ x 203′ wide, and is undercut around all of its perimeter, widening to a room approximately 994′ x 442′. This is the second deepest pit in Mexico and perhaps the 11th deepest in the world. Wow!
