Itinerary of your trip Kalahari - 15 Days Adventure

  • Day 1 Day 1: Letโ€™S Go At Last!
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 1: Letโ€™S Go At Last!

Today your plane leaves for Namibia, the land of infinite space.

  • Day 2 Day 2: The Red Kalahari
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 2: The Red Kalahari

Welcome to Namibia! Full of anticipation, your tour guide awaits you at the airport. And then itโ€™s off into the middle of the red dunes of the Kalahari. Actually it is only a semi-desert, at least here, where acacias and tall grass dominate the landscape. Characteristic for the Kalahari are the red longitudinal dunes, which run parallel to the prevailing wind direction and, in contrast to the dunes of the Namib, do not move. After the flight you can first really arrive. Lay by the pool or get in the mood for your trip with an optional dune drive.

      Meals
Dinner is included and is served in the boma, an outdoor area fenced in with wooden stakes, and accompanied by the dancing glow of the central campfire.

      Accommodation
      Camelthorn Kalahari Lodge
Camelthorn Kalahari Lodge is located in the Intu Africa Kalahari Game Reserve, nestled between two dunes under tall camelthorn trees. Here, the wonderland of the Kalahari awaits you as you would imagine it: red dunes overgrown with yellow grass, wide dune valleys where camelthorn trees proudly defy the conditions. In the midst of it all, springbok, oryx antelope, wildebeest, zebra, and ostrich, to name a few, roam the bush, sometimes leisurely, sometimes faster. The rustic chalets are spacious and blend harmoniously into the landscape. A swimming pool awaits you for refreshment. A special feature of Camelthorn: The San, the original inhabitants of the Kalahari, live on the grounds of the lodge.

      Notes
The driving distance is about 240 kilometers. The driving time is about 3 hours.
Canโ€™t get enough? Our additional recommendation:
Take a sunset drive of about two hours, a special African experience: Kalahari dunes, wide valleys, red earth, yellow grass, green camel thorn trees and here and there springboks, oryx antelopes and ostriches moving gracefully in this timelessly beautiful dune world. The minimum number of participants is 2, the price per person is NA-$ 565 (valid until 31.10.2023).
  • Day 3 Day 3: Up And Down In The Dunes Of The Kalahari
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 3: Up And Down In The Dunes Of The Kalahari

Early in the morning you will dive into the ancient culture of the nomadic people under the expert guidance of the San. Youโ€™ll seek out life-giving water where there is none, dig for edible plants, get a crash course in hunting with bow and arrow, and maybe even try your hand at the complex San language with its colorful clicking sounds. Then youโ€™ll rock through the Kalahariโ€™s sea of dunes. The hills are actually kilometer-long strips of dunes that are fixed by plant growth and thus do not migrate. Along the way there are impressive specimens of ornithological architecture. The communal nests of the settweavers reach dimensions of small huts, with hidden communal entrances and dummies to confuse unwanted intruders. The chatter of the birds can be deafening at times. At sunset, you will take a walk with your guide and enjoy a wonderful, and in Southern Africa obligatory, sundowner - the festive end of the day. Of course, cool drinks will be provided.

      Meals
      Breakfast and dinner are included.

      Accommodation
      Kalahari Game Lodge
The Kalahari Game Lodge is located in the very southeast of Namibia and not far from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park in a beautiful savannah landscape directly at the dry river Auob. Red sand dunes and tree savannah provide habitat for more than 50 mammal and over 200 bird species. The lodge sits on 40,000 acres of land and is built from an interesting mix of natural wood as well as iconic corrugated iron. Lots of bright accents add a friendly, modern flair. Rooms are comfortably furnished, and the terrace overlooks the Auob Riverbed.

      Notes
The driving distance is about 320 kilometers. The driving time is about 4 ยฝ hours.
  • Day 4 Day 4: Into The Lion Kingdom
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4: Into The Lion Kingdom

A short jump and you are in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park in South Africa. Kgalagadi is a so-called Peace Park in partnership with Botswana. This fact grants antelope herds the freedom to move unhindered on their natural migration routes in the 38,000 square kilometer transfrontier area. The park is best known for its prides of lions, which truly rule here. The Kalahari lion is even a very special subspecies of this cat genus. It belongs to the larger lion species. The very dark, sometimes even black mane of the pride chiefs is striking. The whole day you are on the way in the national park.

      Meals
      Breakfast and dinner are included.

      Accommodation
Kalahari Game Lodge [Followed by overnight]
The Kalahari Game Lodge is your accommodation again today.

  • Day 5 Day 5: In Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5: In Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park

Because it was so beautiful, we request an audience with the king of animals again today. This time our two-hour safari starts in the afternoon and we enter the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park through the Twee Rivieren Gate. In search of lion and co. we push forward to the south of the park. But you also donโ€™t want to miss the smaller inhabitants of the Kalahari. Like the perky meerkats, squatting upright on their hind legs in front of their burrows, attentively casting their sharp gaze from side to side.

      Meals
      Breakfast and dinner are included.

      Accommodation
      Kgalagadi Lodge
Kgalagadi Lodge is a hostel with a lot of heart in the nostalgic farmhouse style found in rural South Africa. Only five kilometers from the entrance gate of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park, this is a very good place to stay for guests who want to get to the park early, but do not want to miss out on the comforts of a pleasant lodge. Each chalet is bright and friendly and offers the possibility of self-catering, if you do not want to visit the lodgeโ€™s own restaurant. On the grounds of the lodge you will find not only a swimming pool, but also a supermarket, a bakery, a butchery and a liquor store.

  • Day 6 Day 6: On The Orange River
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: On The Orange River

And suddenly the green lifeline along the Orange River is at your feet. Upington is the agricultural stronghold of the region, with wine growing leading the way. Irrigation is still partly carried out by means of traditional water wheels. By the way, the river is not named after its reddish color, but after the Dutch noble house of Orange. In your accommodation today you are already close to the Augrabies Falls National Park.

      Meals
      Breakfast is included.

      Accommodation
      Dundi Lodge
Dundi Lodge is located just a few kilometers from Augrabies Falls National Park and is an ideal place to stay while visiting the park. • Day 7 Day 7: A Treasure Hunt In Augrabies Falls National Park
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 7: A Treasure Hunt In Augrabies Falls National Park

Get ready for Augrabies Falls National Park. The South African nature reserve stretches 220 square kilometers along the Orange River and offers dramatic scenery. Augrabies means "the roaring place," and youโ€™ll hear it. And see it. Walk straight to the waterfall. Here, the Orange River plunges 60 meters and then continues to meander between steep cliffs to the Atlantic Ocean. According to legend, an immeasurable diamond treasure lies at the foot of the imposing Augrabies waterfall. There are countless fantastic stories about this arid landscape. According to African folklore, devastating consequences are to be expected if the "tree of life," the inconspicuous shepherdโ€™s tree, is damaged or felled. It also takes a lot of imagination to recognize kinship between the cute klipshepherd and an elephant. Let yourself be surprised what other bizarreness you discover during the subsequent one-hour hike on the Gorges Trail, which is about two kilometers long! In South Africa, a visit to a winery is a must. Thatโ€™s why we are guests at "Die Mas van Kakamas Wynkelder". A taste of the noble drop is included.

      Catering
Breakfast is included in the price. At the winery, a light lunch in the form of a snack plate with appetizers of local delicacies and a wine tasting await you.

      Accommodation
      Dundi Lodge [Consequence Overnight]

  • Day 8 Day 8: Mighty Fish River Canyon
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 8: Mighty Fish River Canyon

Today you are literally standing in front of the abyss, fortunately a truly grandiose one. The Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world. Formed by a break in the geological formation and then eroded for millions of years, it is one of Africaโ€™s natural wonders. About 160 kilometers long and with a depth of up to 549 meters, it winds through the south of the country. Be sure to walk along the rim of the canyonโ€™s eastern edge and gaze out over the eternal expanse. Look down from the main overlook to Hell Bend, the most imposing example of the winding canyon run. Itโ€™s hard to leave this awe-inspiring place.

      Meals
Meals included are breakfast and dinner.

      Accommodation
      Canyon Lodge
Canyon Lodge is located just a few kilometers from the entrance to Fish River National Park. Built in 1910, the farmhouse has been converted into a restaurant. The natural stone bungalows, charmingly integrated into the landscape, are thatched. They nestle between the mighty granite rocks and convey the feeling of living in the middle of nature. A curved swimming pool with a great view of the surrounding granite rocks belongs to the lodge.

  • Day 9 Day 9: Back To The Origins In Lรผderitz
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 9: Back To The Origins In Lรผderitz

During an expedition to the southernmost tip of the continent, the Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Diaz landed in the shallow bay of Lรผderitz. To document his success, he erected a so-called padrรฃo, a stone cross. In the following centuries, whalers and guano collectors of various origins headed for the natural harbor. Eventually, German merchants established a trading post here in hopes of finding mineral resources. This was the birth of the colony of German Southwest Africa. During a bay cruise you will follow in the footsteps of the early visitors and conquerors. The trip along the coast will of course also take you to the Diaz Cross.

      Meals
Breakfast is included. For dinner we recommend the Lรผderitz oysters and seasonal lobsters (not included in the price).

      Accommodation
      Lรผderitz Nest Hotel
The Lรผderitz Nest Hotel is situated on the eastern South Atlantic in a sheltered bay, also called Lรผderitz Bay, and directly on the beach of Lรผderitz. • Day 10 Day 10: Kolmanskop: A Myth Of Upswing And Decadence
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 10: Kolmanskop: A Myth Of Upswing And Decadence

You will sail for two hours in a catamaran along the bays to Halifax. The island is an important breeding ground for its inhabitants, the cute spectacled penguins. The desolate Petrel Bay holds the dark history of whaling. Here, the giants of the seas were hunted down for their tran, which served as lamp oil, among other things. When the sky is thick with fog and the wind is blowing, you can hear the sorrowful voices of poached whales. In Kolmanskop you follow the call of quite different spirits. In the old days, diamonds used to lie in the sand here and were picked up by moonlight. Word of the first find spread quickly, and in no time at all a splendid little town in the playful Art Nouveau style sprang up. But the heyday was short-lived. Kolmanskop was constantly fighting the shifting sands, drinking water was scarce and expensive, and plants did not want to thrive here. As soon as the diamond finds dried up, the buildings were abandoned to the desert. Today, the sand is up to the ceiling beams in some houses, but in the restored walls you may still be able to hear shadows dancing exuberantly to the quiet music from the gramophone. In the afternoon you will explore Lรผderitz on foot with your guide. During the one-hour city walk you will get to know the two national monuments, the Rock Church and the Goerke House, as well as the old city quarter and the waterfront of Lรผderitz.

      Meals
      Breakfast is included.

      Accommodation
      Lรผderitz Nest Hotel [Consequence Overnight]
The Lรผderitz Nest Hotel is your accommodation today as well.
  • Day 11 Day 11: Journey To The Color Palette Of Solitude
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 11: Journey To The Color Palette Of Solitude

The origin of the desert horses of Garub is much puzzled over. The fact that these noble steeds survived in the unforgiving landscape is amazing. The Tiras Plains and NamibRand are among the most beautiful desert landscapes in southern Africa and have inspired many an artist. In the Nama language, Namib means "empty place" or "place where there is nothing". It is spoken of as the oldest desert in the world. As a free nation, they strove for their own identity and so the state name Namibia was derived from the Namib Desert for independence, reflecting the love and pride of the people for their arid land. After the drive over the dusty dirt road, the pool offers a welcome refreshment. Alternatively, stretch your legs with a walk on your own. In the evening, listen for the noise geckos make as they begin to clack at sunset to attract a female. Welcome to the gates of the Namib-Naukluft National Park!

      Meals
      Breakfast and dinner are included.

      Accommodation
      Elegant Desert Lodge
Elegant Desert Lodge is located 32 kilometers south of Sesriem and combines the old with the modern. The converted main house served as a farm building in earlier times. All rooms are built of natural stone and stylishly furnished. From the veranda you have a wonderful view over the wide plains of the surrounding area and the purple mountains in the background. Relax after an eventful day at the swimming pool and watch the wild animals at the waterhole in the evening.

  • Day 12 Day 12: The Sandy Sea Of Sossuvlei
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 12: The Sandy Sea Of Sossuvlei

Already before sunrise you set off to the gigantic dunes at Sossusvlei, which belong to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. Enjoy the unique atmosphere in the dune valley in the early morning. The last five kilometers to the vlei will be covered in a four-wheel drive shuttle, as normal vehicles cannot cope with the masses of sand. The immovable star dunes at Sossuslvei are among the highest dunes on earth. You walk through the dune world and can try to climb one of the up to 350 meters high sand mountains. As soon as you walk through the Dead Vlei with its over 500 year old dead acacias, you know that it is rightly named. Before leaving the park, explore on foot the Sesriem Canyon, carved into the rock by the Tsauchab River over millions of years, which offers a welcome shady spot here and there. At the end of the day, marvel at the spectacular starry sky and listen to the sounds of the desert at night.

Meals included are a packed breakfast, which you will enjoy in the middle of Sossusvlei, and dinner.
