  • Day 1 Day 1: Arrival In Kathmandu & Transfer To Hotel.

      On your arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be met by Sherpa Expedition and Trekking staff member and taken to your hotels in Thamel. This will be followed by a briefing concerning this trek and the hotels/lodges you will stay at on the trail.   This is where you have a chance to meet your fellow trekkers.

      This morning we will head to the domestic airport for our one hour flight to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj is one of the hottest places in Nepal, hence donโ€™t overdress! The views on your flight will be of towering peaks and lush rolling green hills. Nepalgunj is situated on the plains of Nepal.

      This morning we take a short flight to Jhupal in Dolpo where you will meet your trekking guide. From here we have a short drive to Dunai where we will stay the night. On arrival in Dunai you will have time to explore the markets and wander around this quaint little town.

      Today we will trek up to Sulighat via the village of Kagbeni. The trail passes through dense forests and passes several settlements. The trail will pass through dense vegetation providing shade from the sun. On reaching Shangta we will cross the junction of two rivers: Phoksundo Khola and Maiaba Khola. From here we head upriver and ascend to Chhepka Village.

      This morning we head out on a mostly uphill trail and start to get glimpses of the mighty Himalayan Mountains. As we get closer to Amchi Hospital the terrain becomes steeper and the air clearer and cooler.

      This morning we will head to Phoksundo Lake slowly climbing up across densely forested slopes. It is a tough uphill trek, but once you arrive at Phoksundo Lake with its amazing turquoise blue water you will feel well rewarded. The lake is surrounded by rocky hills and is a beautiful vista surrounding the lake.

      Today we will explore Phoksundo Lake and the surrounding countryside. We will also explore the nearby 900 year-old Tibetan monastery, Tshowa Gompa that is perched on a ridge just above the lake. Phoksundo Lake is spiritually important to the Buddhist community living in this region. You may wish to sit around the lake in quiet meditation and take in the views.

      This morning we head to the more restricted area of the Upper Dolpo region. This is a popular trail for locals on a trade route that leads to Tibet. The trail heads through fragrant and shaded pine forests. In the distance you can see many snow-clad peaks.

      Today we follow a trail through and along the windswept Tuk Kyaksa River. The trail frequently crosses the river before coming to a wooden bridge that takes us into a broad valley where sheep can be see grazing. We then follow the trail next to a deep gorge until we come to our overnight campsite, Kang La Base Camp (Nagdalo Camp).

      In the early morning we head out on a tough climb on rocky ground to Kang La Pass (5350m), also referred to as Nagdalo La Pass. You will have some truly amazing views from the top of Kang La Pass. You will get a view of Crystal Mountain and other mountains within Tibet. The pass is adorned with colorful Tibetan prayer flags. This is a remote and arid region in Dolpo. We then cautiously head down the valley and a short time later come to a red Chorten will mark our arrival at Shey Gompa (4280m). โ€˜Sheyโ€™ translates to the crystal in the Tibetan language. Shey Gompa is an 800-year-old monastery filled with intricate murals and very old scrolls describing the folklore behind Crystal Mountain. Every year many pilgrims head here to make Kora (a clockwise circuit of Crystal Peak). On every 12 year cycle, on the Year of the Dragon, there is a major festival. Tonight we will set up camp on the compounds of this fascinating monastery.

      Today we follow the trail alongside the Sephu Khola (river) until we come to Shey La Pass (5094m). From the pass we have some stunning views of Mustang in the east, Tibet in the north and the mountains Kanjiroba, Kagmara, and Crystal Mountain in the west. After navigating our way through the pass we come to Namgung Gompa (4360m). The monastery is located in Namgung Village and has only six houses and is surrounded by terraced fields.

      Today we head downstream from Namgung Khola passing through yak pastures and then come to a charming village, Saldang (3770m). We will stop here for lunch with the villagers. We will then head towards the 1000-year-old Yangjer Gumba (3890m). It is a prosperous monastery due to it being on the old route to Tibet. Yangjer Gumba is known for its nine larger Chortens surrounded by twenty smaller ones. There is one huge Chorten in the centre. The trail takes us through sheer gorges before coming to Gumba.

      Today we head through Saldan Lek on a trail on the banks of the Raphya Khola. This trail then heads to Khoma La Pass (4500m). From here we descend to Komash Village (4060m) with its distinct Tibetan style architecture. We will camp in the village overnight.

      On the trail today it is possible that you will see Blue Sheep or the elusive Snow Leopard. We will pass through several small villages on the trail and enjoy awesome views of the scrubby vegetation of the mostly barren hills. Tinze is a beautiful village that surrounds a valley. It is a peaceful place at which we will set up camp for the night.

      Today we leave the Tinze Valley and head to Yak Kharka (4780m). As the name suggests, it is an enormous and open grazing land for yaks and sheep in the area. We will take the trail alongside the Panjyan Khola (river) before arriving at the settlement of Chhamdang. The grassy area is an ideal campsite for the night and is close to the Thalum Khola (river).

      We start out today by crossing a bridge over the Sulun Khola (river) on the trail to Tokyu Gaon (4240m). We then have a steep uphill climb to the top of Cho La Pass (5420m). This is probably the most physically demanding part of the trek. From the pass you will have some stunning views down to Tarap Valley. We then descend to Tokyu Gaon where we will set up camp for the night.

      The trail today is relatively easy as we take a short trek of 1.5 hours to Dho Tarap (3944m). The villagers of Dho Tarap are mostly followers of Bon Po or Buddhism. At Dho Tarap you will have time to observe the customary Tibetan lifestyle and meet some extraordinary friendly people. They are kept occupied by trading with the yak caravans. It is a fascinating village that will leave you enthralled as you visit the monasteries and seek a blessing from the resident Lama. You may also choose to wander the trails in the vicinity. Tonight we will find a campsite close to the village. This quaint village is a highlight of this trek.

  • Day 18 Day 18: Trek From Dho Tarap To Chhegur Cave (3441M/11289 Ft) Duration 5-6 Hours.

      Today we will pass through some more charming typical Tibetan villages and the ever-present Chortens in the area. We will follow the trail next to Tarap Khola for most of the day. The trail frequently crosses the river back and forth and takes us through a narrow gorge before arriving at Ghyamghar (3755m). Along the trail we pass the villages of Sisaul, Tottol, and Nawarpani. The trail through the gorge eventually opens up to a broad landscape and on to Chhegur (3440m) where we will camp for the night.

      Again we follow the Tarap Khola to where it meets the Thuli Bheri River. The river is popular for kayakers and is considered one of the most stunning in the world. This region is considered to be one of the finest and most beautiful stretches in the world. The vegetation on the trail changes from the usual arid rocky terrain to a more green and lush landscape. We will then come to the village of Tarakot where we will camp overnight.

      This morning we follow along the banks above the Thuli Bheri River passing the villages of Lawan and Byasgad. The trail passes through forest and the terraced fields until we finally arrive at Juphal from where we will fly back to Kathmandu. This is a time to celebrate as we complete our days on the trail to this most fascinating place that has remained mostly unchanged for centuries.

      Early this morning we take a one hour scenic flight to Kathmandu. From the plane you will have some awesome views looking down at the terrain below. On arrival at Kathmandu you will be taken to your hotels in Thamel where you can choose to put your feet up and relax or head out to celebrate your journey into the remote and forgotten land of Dolpo.

      Today a representative from Sherpa Expedition & Trekking will take you to the airport at least three hours prior to your scheduled departure from Nepal.
