  • Day 2 Day 2: Kathmandu City Tour
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 2: Kathmandu City Tour

Nestled in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas is this large valley holding thousands of years of history and culture. The Kathmandu Valley is larger than the country of Singapore and features an inviting collection of temples, cities, villages, and farms. The Valley is ringed by the high hills that surround it and is well watered by the many rivers that flow through it on their way to join with the Sacred Ganges River in India. The Valley is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites that reflect its political and religious history. We will have time to visit just three of those sites today. In the morning, we travel to the holiest Hindu site in all of Nepal: Pashupatinath. Here on the banks of the holy Bagmati River are nearly 500 Hindu temples dedicated to a myriad of deities. The faithful are cremated at ghats on its banks, with their ashes mixed with the sacred water of the Bagmati. Holy men teach the followers, dressed in their saffron robes. From here we go to Boudhanath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Asia. The afternoon is spent touring the ancient city of Bhaktapur with its temples and old royal palace.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Drive To Arughat
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: Drive To Arughat

Today is a new day and the start of the journey to the region of the Manaslu! We rise early and after breakfast, you are taken by private vehicle to the village of Arughat Bazaar on the banks of the Budhi Gandaki River. The river originates in the Manaslu region and will serve as our map as we move upriver to reach the northern slopes of the mountain. The journey is a very pleasant one as we cross the pass out of the Kathmandu Valley and then snake our way down the switchbacks into the Trisuli River Valley. We cross the river on the road to Dhading and then make our way down a dirt road that leads to Arughat. We pass through small villages and by small farms. This region is known as the lower Ruby Valley. To the north of here is the Ganesh Himal Mountains which have become popular as a new trekking area. We continue on until we reach Arughat. Itโ€™s a large bazaar and the principal village of the region where people come to buy supplies. We will spend the night here after around a seven-hour journey.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Trek To Lapu Besi
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4: Trek To Lapu Besi

Our journey takes us northward along the west side of the Budhi Gandaki River. This river is so wild that it cannot be tamed by even the most experienced of whitewater rafters. It flows and cascades over large rocks with an angry white foam, proclaiming its power here in the Himalaya. Yet along the way, we will find various fishing villages that fish for what bravely swims against this powerful current. We can take the narrow road to the village of Soti Khola where the last of any resemblance of a road will end. Itโ€™s a rather level country with more tiny farms. When we reach Soti Khola, we cross a narrow suspension bridge. From here the area starts to get more rugged with farms now being terraced on the steep hills. This valley was carved by the mighty waters of the Budhi Gandaki. The lower trail is easier, but not always passable during monsoon season. Our destination is the tiny little village of Lapu Besi where we get some of the first glimpses of Mt. Manaslu.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Trek To Dovan
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 5: Trek To Dovan

Arughat Besi is lower in elevation than the Kathmandu Valley. In much of the trekking we are doing, we are actually in sub-tropical biospheres with its own unique variety of plant life. We are climbing upwards each day to higher elevations as we follow along the river. We will cross the river twice on long suspension bridges. Listen to the sounds of brass bells. This means the approach of donkey trains that move goods in and out of the mountains. Keep to the hill-side of the trail as you allow the donkeys to pass. They are not dangerous but can be cantankerous as they donโ€™t like to give up their part of the trail. The lead donkey is always adorned with some colorful jewelry and cloth as the young men herd them forward. We will meet many of the local people trekking these trails. They trek them not for enjoyment like us; they trek them because they are the โ€œhighwaysโ€ of the Himalayas.  Everything moves on these trails, from goods to people. Watch for children going to school. The older children sometimes walk as much as three hours one way to reach schools that feature upper grades. Trekking time is 7 โ€“ 8 hours.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Trek To Philim
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 6: Trek To Philim

This is the last day of trekking through villages as we ascend to the village of Philim. Our destination is at the same elevation as the Kathmandu Valley. The journey itself is through some rather amazing country with fascinating history and scenery. This is primarily a Buddhist country and we will pass by mani-walls. These are rock walls inscribed with the saying of Lord Buddha. Many have been here hundreds of years and commemorate some memorable events in the life of the carver. At Tatopani is a hot spring. The ecology of the Tatopani area is unique as hot water drips off the sides of the cliff. We pass through the picturesque village of Jagat with its flagstone streets. We can find delicious fish at Machhakholagaon as well as even momo made of yak cheese. From Jagat we cross the Budhi Gandaki to reach the east side. The trail here rises steeply to reach Philim, the last village of any consequence until we get north of Manaslu. It is the largest village north of Arughat with splendid views of the Budhi Gandaki Valley below. Trekking time is 6 โ€“ 7 hours.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Trek To Deng
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 7: Trek To Deng

From here north, there will be very few villages. This is definitely the landless traveled and it may even feel quite lonely at times. We can watch eagles circling overhead as they rise on the thermal currents. There is the cry of the hawk. About the only village, we will pass through is Salleri which is very tiny.  We do have a wonderful view of Mt. Sringi Himal (elev. 7,187 m). After several hours, we come to a fork in the trail. The one going to the right will take you into the secret Tsum Valley, which was closed to the outside world until 2008. We take the left fork which continues to follow along the Budhi Gandaki. The river has become much narrower here as we cross the bridge over the Syar River that flows into our river. The trail will afford a fabulous view of Passing before traveling through a deep rock cut, cut into the sheer sides of the cliff walls. Our journey will take us to Deng, the first village of the Tibetan people. Trekking time is 6 โ€“ 7 hours.

  • Day 8 Day 8: Trek To Namrung
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 8: Trek To Namrung

Today is a change of scenery and culture as the land begins to resemble more and more Tibet. The lands north of Mt. Manaslu were settled by people from Tibet who immigrated here well over 1000 years before. They were able to tame this hostile land, creating productive farms. The main crops up here include buckwheat, potatoes, cabbage, and barley. Unlike in modern Tibet north of us, the people here have maintained their culture as well as their devotion to the Dalai Lama. We pass the village of Bih after 3 โ€“ 4 hours as we pass into a narrow valley. We stop for lunch at the village of Ghap which sits on both banks of the Budhi Gandaki. Here the river is narrow enough to be spanned by a wooden bridge rather than the more impressive suspension bridges farther downstream.  We can see Mt. Manaslu to the south along with a number of snowcapped peaks, all ranging over 7000 meters in height. Manalsu is 8,163 meters in elevation and will definitely dominate the skyline. We will camp at the village of Namrung for the night.

  • Day 9 Day 9: Trek To Sama Gaun
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 9: Trek To Sama Gaun

We continue to climb in elevation today to reach our destination of Sama Gompa. We are traveling on the old salt road used in times past to bring back the precious salt from Tibet to the north. We are only a dayโ€™s journey from Tibet and many of the locals do still travel this route. Much of the goods we see for sale in the marketplace come from China rather than India. We pass through the village of Sama Gaun which is one of the largest villages in this region. There is a beautiful gompa or Buddhist monastery here that we will visit. The people of the region live as they have for hundreds of years. Time has stood still for them. While Tibet has experienced the โ€œcultural revolutionโ€ of the Chinese to the north, this land remains untouched, sharing its unique and ancient Tibetan culture with those few visitors who come here each year. We explore the village before finding a place to camp for the night. Trekking time is around 7 โ€“ 8 hours.

  • Day 10 Day 10: Acclimatization Day / Rest Day
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 10: Acclimatization Day / Rest Day

Yesterday we crossed the 3000-meter mark, which requires us to take a day to allow our bodies to adjust to the thinner mountain air. Here the air is much thinner and we are starting to have some difficulty breathing. Today we stop our trek to explore around Sama Gompa, taking some day hikes. By doing a day of acclimatization, we can ward off the effects of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). This is a real condition, and if not properly treated, can be fatal. Fortunately, the good news is that we donโ€™t need any elaborate or expensive medication. It takes about a day for our bodies to make the adjustments. The village of Sama Gompa is a large, Tibetan village. Weโ€™ll experience some fantastic traditional Tibetan cooking, plus take a short hike to a vantage point to get a remarkable view of Mt. Manaslu in all of its glory. The people here call Manaslu โ€œSpirit Mountainโ€ and worship it as a deity.  It is an easy hike to our viewpoint where we can linger, take pictures or just appreciate the beauty of the Manaslu region.

  • Day 11 Day 11: Trek To Samdo
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 11: Trek To Samdo

We are really not that far from the village of Samdo, but the higher elevation, as well as the extremely dry air, requires us to trek more slowly than weโ€™ve been doing.  We will gain much in elevation, so we take it slowly, using the time to admire the immense beauty of the region. Each step we take will reveal more and more the Himalayan skyline.  Samdo is one of the most remote villages in Nepal. It has a population of around 200 people, all involved in local agriculture. The trail at times climbs upwards on the terraced farms which are connected by narrow little trails that scale the sides of the terraces. These terraces demonstrate the ingenuity of the Tibetan people who found a way to create narrow strips of level farmland in some of the most inhospitable land imaginable. The Budhi Gandaki River has narrowed to becoming just a large stream. We find in Samdo a basic tea house. The accommodations arenโ€™t much, but the food will be wholesome and hardy. Samdo is the last village before we reach Larkya-La pass, the highest point on this trek.

  • Day 12 Day 12: Trek To Larkya Phedi
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 12: Trek To Larkya Phedi

We leave Samdo behind and enter into the wild Himalayan countryside. This is the land beyond civilization.  We have left the tree-line behind a couple of days ago, and now we leave the farms behind. We will pass through the ruins of the village of Larkya Bazaar. In the days when merchants traversed this path from Tibet, the village thrived. Once traders ceased to travel to Tibet for salt, the village dried up until today, it stands empty of all people. It will feel strange as we walk through the wind-swept streets of an uninhabited place. We continue to climb as we approach Larkya Glacier whose melting waters create the Budhi Gandaki and other streams. We walk slowly at this high elevation to reach the little lodge called the Larkya La Guest House. It was constructed to serve those trekkers who climb to the top of Larkya La Pass. Itโ€™s the final place before tomorrowโ€™s crossing. We get a good nightโ€™s sleep as well as a hot meal. Trekking time is around four hours.

  • Day 13 Day 13: Trek To Bimthang
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 13: Trek To Bimthang

The trek from Larkya Phedi where our guest house is located to the top of the pass is a gradual, winding trail that makes its way to the summit. Larkya-La is the pass through the forbidden slopes of the Manaslu region. It is a high pass, which will give us the most phenomenal view of all the mountains. In one direction is the Manaslu range; the other the mighty Annapurna Mountains with Mt. Annapurna I, the 10th highest mountain in the world. The journey will take us past the moraine of the glacier and into the Ablation Valley on the north side of the Larkya glacier. From here, we stop often to marvel at the snow-capped peaks that dominate the skyline. Once on top of Larkya La Pass, we take a well-earned break to enjoy the natural beauty. From here itโ€™s now downhill toward the village of Bimthang (elev. 3,700 m/12,136 ft.) Bimthang is a broad and level valley where we can find a place to camp for the night. Bimthang contains mani-walls as well as deserted houses. The land is just too inhospitable to support long-term settlements.

  • Day 14 Day 14: Trek To Dharapani
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 14: Trek To Dharapani

Today we start to see trees again! The trail below Bimthang now takes us below the tree line and we will encounter fragrant forests of pine, fir, and rhododendron. There are summer pastures up here, locally known as kharkas. Here men and their sons will come for the summer months with their goats and sheep to allow them to graze on the sweet grasses that grow in abundance up here. All along the way, we have wonderful outcroppings where we can behold the pleasant views of this alpine region. The meadows are full of wildflowers that bloom in so many different colors.  We can see more and more of the many peaks of the famed Annapurna region. Itโ€™s an easy walk to our lunch place near Karche. Following our lunch, we continue to descend past the summer settlement of Goh. Below Goh, we find once more the terraced farms of the Himalayas. We start to come into a number of small villages, reminding us that civilization is found at the lower levels of the region. We will spend the night at the village of Dharapani, which will intersect with main trail of the Annapurna Circuit.

  • Day 15 Day 15: Drive To Beshishahar
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 15: Drive To Beshishahar

Today our trekking is over. At the village of Dharapani, we can pick up a vehicle to reach our destination of Beshishahar where we will spend the night. The journey is by local transportation and is not fast by any means. These are rough mountain roads that we will bounce over. But the good news is that we donโ€™t have to walk it! We drop extensively in elevation. These local roads travel through local villages.  We travel by jeep, although if this is summer monsoon season, jeep might not be available. Still, we have some pretty scenery as we follow along, fast-flowing streams moving southward here in the Annapurna region. Jeep travel time is around five hours to reach our guesthouse at Beshishahar.

  • Day 16 Day 16: Drive Back To Kathmandu
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 16: Drive Back To Kathmandu

The road from Beshishahar gets better as we make our way back toward the main road between Pokhara and Kathmandu. Itโ€™s much easier traveling from here, as this area is the headquarters of the Lamjung region of the Annapurnas. It is from here that the traditional treks of the Annapurna Circuit begin. Weโ€™ve completed the route less traveled, and we head eastward to reach Kathmandu. We meet up with the Trisuli River once more at Mugling where we cross a suspension bridge over the river while whitewater rafters pass below us.  The paved road winds its way to Kathmandu, crossing the pass and back into the city. We reach our hotel where we strip off our dirty clothes for a hot shower. In the evening, we have a farewell dinner with our friends from Himalayan Planet Adventures where we toast our success of the last 16 days. No doubt we look over the digital pictures weโ€™ve taken on our cameras, sharing the moment with guide and staff. In the evening, lay down in a comfortable hotel bed, soon fast asleep in the still of the Himalayan night.

  • Day 17 Day 17: Departure From Kathmandu
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 17: Departure From Kathmandu

You knew this day would have to come, and today you feel rather sad leaving behind the magical land of Nepal. The local people claim that the Himalayas are gods and their spirits do seem to be calling for you to return. Youโ€™ve only seen a very small part of this fabled land. Before leaving today for your next destination, be sure to discuss with your friends at Himalayan Planet Adventures about a return trip. Himalayan Planet Adventures can put together additional trips to the Himalayas. This can include Mt. Everest, the Terai region with its Royal Bengal Tigers, or even a trip to Tibet, Bhutan or beyond. Itโ€™s all in the realm of possibilities. So why not plan to return to the magical land called Nepal in the very heart of the worldโ€™s highest mountains? Nepal is calling you to come home to the mountains once more.
