Guide

All group trips are accompanied by one of our group leaders. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Premium leaders are Intrepidโ€™s most experienced, with in-depth knowledge and extensive local networks to make it a trip of a lifetime. Your leader will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense, you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious, and social aspects. At Intrepid we aim to support local guides who have specialised knowledge of the regions we visit. When not already included in your trip, your leader will be able to recommend a local guide service who can share more detailed or specialised information at specific sites should you be interested in delving deeper.

Accommodation

The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation. Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available. Comfortable hotel (9 nights),Feature Stay (2 nights)

Itinerary of your trip Premium Costa Rica In Depth

  • Day 1 Day 1: San Josรฉ
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 1: San Josรฉ

Bienvenidos! Welcome to Costa Rica. Your adventure begins in San Jose, the countryโ€™s flourishing capital where you will be collected from the airport on arrival and transferred to your hotel. Here you will meet your local leader and small group for an important welcome meeting at 6pm. Costa Rican coffee is some of the best in the world, with great cafes to match, so if you arrive with time to spare perhaps set out to sample the local brew. After your meeting, head out with your leader and fellow travellers to dine like a local during a welcome meal in Barrio Escalante, one of San Joseโ€™s trendy gastronomic neighbourhoods. Your leader will share the history of the area and tell you about its famous residents as you sample delicious local specialties.Accommodation: Gran Hotel Costa Rica Curio Collection By Hilton or similar

  • Day 2 Day 2: Tortuguero
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 2: Tortuguero

Leave the hotel early this morning and descend to the Caribbean lowlands on a scenic (and slightly bumpy) journey that ends at the port of La Pavona, your entry point to Tortuguero National Park. Next youโ€™ll transfer to a boat and get your first taste of the magic of the Tortuguero, where roads are replaced by sun dappled canals and the only traffic noises are the calls of tropical birds. After lunch, tour the town of Tortuguero and learn about the Miskito, the Miskito-Zambo and Afro-Caribbean people who call it home. As you tour the town, learn about the lifestyle of its people, their customs and their daily life. If you are visiting between July and October, itโ€™s possible to book an optional evening turtle tour which offers the chance to see turtles laying their eggs.Accommodation: Mawamba Lodge or similar

  • Day 3 Day 3: Tortuguero
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: Tortuguero

Awaken to the sound of birdsong and perhaps enjoy a morning walk through the hotel gardens after breakfast. Itโ€™s a magical and relaxing way to experience the biodiversity of the area. During the afternoon, take a boat tour along the National Parkโ€™s canals with the chance to see up to 13 of Costa Ricaโ€™s 16 most endangered mammals such as manatees, ocelots and jaguars, as well as hundreds of bird species. This national park is also the largest green turtle nesting ground in the Western Hemisphere. Lesser numbers of the critically endangered hawksbill turtle, plus loggerheads, and giant leatherback turtles also nest within the park at different times of the year. Youโ€™ll need to be ready for all seasons โ€“ waterproof clothing and shoes are recommended โ€“ on this nature focused day.Accommodation: Mawamba Lodge or similar
