Itinerary of your trip Laugavegur Trek With Glacier Hike - 5 Day (Huts)

  • Day 1 Day 1: Reykjavik - Landmannalaugar
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 1: Reykjavik - Landmannalaugar

The day will begin with a 3-4 hour drive up to Landmannalaugar. The first stop will be the Laugahraun lava field, whose moss-covered rocks were crafted by a massive volcanic eruption of the Brennisteinsalda Volcano in 1477. Then weโ€™ll head to Brennisteinsalda, whose slopes have been dyed blood red, amber yellow, turquoise and deep green by the volcanoโ€™s sulfur deposits over the centuries. This makes it one of the most photogenic places in all of Iceland and the perfect beginning to our odyssey into the Icelandic Highlands.

On the second day after the breakfast, weโ€™ll be heading to Hrafntinnusker, an obsidian desert that grants an otherworldly sight. Then follow Reykjafjoll Mountains with their snowy peaks and superb views of the area. Once the summit is reached weโ€™ll begin to descend into the Jรถkultungur area - a green valley full of various color rocks, this is one of the most enjoyed areas for the hikers. Then we will begin to climb the Jรถkultungur Mountain, weaving around the mountain path to its summit. At the top, we will be rewarded by breathtaking views over the famous Fjallabak Nature Reserve, famous for the large number of birds that reside there. Our accommodation will be in Lake Alftavatn (Whooper Swan Lake)

The third day will start by exploring a wide range of flora and fauna that surrounds the area showing how rich the volcanic soil is. The next stop is the black dessert of Mรฆlifellssandur - the black sands crisscrossed by glue glacial streams. At its center is standing the green the Mt. Mรฆlifell - the black, the blue and the green views will be something youโ€™ve never seen before!

Afterwards weโ€™ll be heading to a narrow green valley, called Emstrur - a completely different view from the black dessert that was just passed through. Thereโ€™s also a small detour in the plan - visiting the deep canyon of Markarfljรณtsgljรบfur, which has been carved into the earth by the icy glacial river that runs through it.

Weโ€™ll spend a night in Botnar, in a secluded mountain hut.

      Day 4: Thorsmork Valley

Our last day in the Icelandic Highlands will take us to the famous Thorsmork Valley, a glorious oasis of green, nestled between two massive glaciers.  Weโ€™ll start by walking close to the huge Myrdalsjokull Glacier, which is like an endless ocean of snow. Next, weโ€™ll reach the dense birch forest, which is the first sign of a Thorsmorks valley. Thorsmork is not possible to describe in words - massive glaciers, rimmed mountains, emerald valleys. A place that everyone should visit once in a lifetime.  Weโ€™ll be leaving at around 21:30 pm to a country hotel.

On the final day, weโ€™ll visit the South Coast of Iceland - stopping by the majestic Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss Waterfalls. The tour will end at the Solheimajokull Glacier a vast body of ice that unfurls like a tongue from the larger Mรฝrdalsjรถkull Glacier. It is especially popular due to its unique topography, where craters, ice, and crevices combine together to create a sublime natural wonder. Our journey will begin at our base camp at the foot of the glacier, where our expert glacier guide will provide you with all the equipment that you need and give you a short safety briefing.

Then, we will travel out onto the mighty glacier itself, where our guide will teach us all about glaciers and how they helped to create the Iceland that you see today.
