Spirited Garden was first launched in 1968 when its director Bum-Young Sung set his mind on developing a piece of deserted wasteland. Through endless trials and errors, the wasteland was designated as the number 1 private garden in South Korea.

40,000 square meters of land is divided into seven gardens and each garden is connected by a stone bridge. Grown out of long-term observation and meditation over art and life, Spirited Garden has been called one of the most beautiful garden in the world, attracting world celebrities and leaders. Mr. Sung's story of creating the garden was featured in Chinese textbook as a model example of the spirit of determined Koreans, along with the miracle of Han River.

The weather condition accompanied by abundance of sunlight, wind, and rain makes Jeju one of the largest green tea producers in Korea. Enjoy high-quality teas in the museum, and watch the vast landscape of green tea fields at an observatory.

Stop At: Sanbangsan Mountain, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo, Jeju Island South Korea
Sanbangsan Mountain is the result of violent volcanic activity 700,000 to 800,000 years ago. The mountain itself is in fact a huge body of chilled lava. The cliffs on the southern side of the lava dome are marked with a rich variety of curious, rare rock formations, some growing as tall as 200 meters high.

This beach is famous for its landscape where nearby Mt. Sanbangsan stretches into the ocean, resembling a dragon’s head going underwater. The entire area is made of sandstone stacks that were built up over millions of years. Wide rocks stacking up on one another along the seashore cliffs complete the majestic scenery.

Moving past a flock of pine tree forest, we will find a beach filled with a group of mysterious, black rock pillars in shapes of cubes and hexagons in varying sizes. These rocks almost seem as carved by human hands. Formed by the cooling and solidification of lava flows, the columnar jointing arose from contraction of molten lava during cooling. This is a unique sight designated as natural monument of Jeju Island.

Sangumburi is a flat crater with a circumference of over 2 km, 650 meters wide, and100 meters deep. If you look at the crater from above up, it looks like a man-made circular stadium. There is an incredible variety of plant-lives in the small crater that it attracts the attention of many researchers

Pass By: Seongsan Sunrise Peak, 78 Seongsan-ri, Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo, Jeju-do, South Korea
Also referred as ‘Sunrise Peak’, this archetypal tuff-cone structure rose from the shallow sea by hydro-volcanic eruptions 5,000 years ago. Climbing to the top, you can find a grass-filled crater surrounded by numerous sharp rocks. This colossal footprint left by nature is a UNESCO World Heritage and also a habitat for 200 types of trees and wild animals.

Japanese empire dig holes on the walls of this lava structure, using them to hide military camps. Now they are used by Haenyeos as their diving platforms. Haenyeos are female divers who dive into the ocean water to gather various shellfish, seaweed, etc, without using any underwater diving equipment. Their unique way of life and culture were inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Heritage of the World. You can watch their performance nearby.

Stop At: Jeongbang Waterfall, Donghong-dong, Seogwipo, Jeju Island South Korea
Jeongbang waterfall or Cheonjiyeon Falls

Jeongbang Waterfall is a magical waterfall that directly descends into the ocean. Such feature cannot be found anywhere else in Asia. Next to the waterfall is an inscription on stone referring to a passage of a royal servant from Chinese Qin Dynasty, ordered by the emperor to find an elixir for permanent life.

The legend behind Cheonjiyeon Falls is told that seven fairies serving the King of Heaven came down to the pond on stairs of clod and bathed in the clean waters. The waterfall itself is 22 meters high and 12 meters wide. This national natural monument is also known as a famous eel-fish habitat. The forest nearby contains a variety of rare plants such as brambles.

Hallasan Mountain is widely known by scientists for its geological value. Designated as a national park in 1970, there are 368 parasitic volcanoes called Oreums (peaks) around the main mountain.

You will take Eorimok trail(Northwest): This short trail is another relatively easy trail for beginners. In spring, the nearby meadows are adorned with red royal azaleas. From the stone pathway to Manse Dongsan, visitors can catch a breathtaking panoramic view of the countryside and the island’s signature Oreums.

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is situated on the coast of north-eastern Busan. While most temples in Korea are located in the mountains, this temple has found its charming location along the shore line. The main sanctuary of the temple was reconstructed in 1970 with careful attention paid to the colors that were traditionally used in such structures.

On the right-hand side, inside the a cave, is a uniquely designed Buddhist sanctum. Other special sites at the temple are four lion statues, the 108 stairs, and stone lanterns lining the rocky landscape. Midway down the 108 steps one can pause and enjoy the calming sounds of the waves, and view the majestic sunrise.

Consisted of houses built in staircase-fashion on the foothills of a coastal mountain, this village was originally made by war refugees for their settlement. In 2000's, the city government of Busan launched maintenance and revitalization project in the area, bringing vibrant murals and sculptures into the meandering alleys of this town. The success of the city projects earned this village the nickname "Machu Picchu of Busan."

Following the Korean War, refugees who fled to Busan set up stalls in order to make a living. Shops in Gukje Market sell an assortment of new and used items. Since vendors deal in both wholesale and retail sales, the average customer can purchase various items at incredibly inexpensive prices.

This market represents Busan and is famous throughout the country. Visitors can buy and eat fresh raw fish right at the market. The common scene in the market is comprised of mostly elderly women selling mackerel, sea squirts and whale meat on wooden boxes along the road outside of the market and along the shore.

Across from Gukje Market is Bupyeong Market. It’s often referred to as Kkangtong Market (kkangtong meaning ‘cans’ in Korean) since canned goods used to be the market’s primary type of merchandise. Nowadays, of course, Bupyeong Market sells virtually everything from domestic to imported goods.

Seokguram, located in Tohamsan Mountain, is the representative stone temple of Korea. This valuable grotto has been kept intact for over 1,200 years, thanks to its design that facilitates natural ventilation and humidity control. Stop At: Cheomseongdae Observatory, Wolseong-dong, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do South Korea
Cheomseongdae is the oldest existing astronomical observatory in Asia. Constructed during the reign of Queen Seon-deok, it was used to observe stars in order to forecast the weather. This stone structure is a beautiful combination of straight lines and curves, built in a shape of a cylinder.

Stop At: Daereungwon Tomb Complex, 9 Gaerim-ro, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do 38165 South Korea
Within Daereungwon Tomb Complex is a large field of giant Korean tombs in the shape of round hills, resembling female breasts. At Cheonmachong Tomb inside the complex, you can enter into the tomb itself. Its hall is consisted of a wooden coffin placed inside an underground chamber mounded with boulders and earth, characterized as a typical upper class tomb of the Silla period.

Gyeongju Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond were the secondary palace site which was used for the palace of the Crown Prince along with other subsidiary buildings. It was also a banquet site for important national event and important visitors.

After the fall of Silla, the site was abandoned and forgotten. The pond was referred to as "Anapji" by the later kingdoms, meaning a pond where the glory of the past is nowhere to be seen but wild geese and ducklings are found. Only in the 1980's, a pottery piece found in excavation revealed the original name of the place, "Wolji"(a pond that reflects the moon).

There are several hiking courses varying in distance and duration, and we will take a route of your preference. You can also take cable car at Gwongeumseong Fortress.

Hwaseong Fortress is an impressive structure from the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty, and the official fortress of Suwon, Gyeonggi-do. Constructed in 1796, it was built to display King Jeongjo’s filial piety towards his father and to design a new pioneer city with its own economic power.

The fortress wall hosts a great variety of military facilities that are hard to be found anywhere else. During the construction, scholar Jeong Yak-Yong invented ‘Geojunggi,’ which uses a lever to lift up heavy stones, greatly reducing time.

Andong Hahoe Doenjang Village is a cultural gem and an extremely rich source of history with famous descendants of the Ryu clan of Pungsan. An abundance of traditional homes abide by the elegant Nakdong river and ancient pine trees.

Buyongdae is a 64 meters tall cliff, situated at the end of Taebaek Mountain Range. One can get a bird’s-eye view of the Hahoe Village. The cliff's name means lotus in English, as seen from the cliff the nearby Hahoe Village’s configuration resembled a lotus flower.

Day 8: Seoul – DMZ/Panmunjeom(JSA) Tour (B/L/X)

Camp Bonifas is a United Nations Command military post in the South Korean side of DMZ. We will first go through passport examination. Afterwards, slideshow and briefing at its Joint Security Area.

The Joint Security Area (JSA), also known as the Panmunjom truce area, remains the most iconic image of the DMZ. Its hawk-eyed guards and barbed wire fences make us realize that we just arrived at one end of a world.

House of Peace is a venue for peace talks between North and South Korea. The building is located in the Joint Security Area on the south side of the Military Demarcation Line bisecting the area. Many inter-Korean summits too place in Freedom House, the conference room of the pavilion.

Pass By: Imjingak Pyeonghoa-Nuri Park, 481-1 Samok-ri, Munsan-eup, Paju, Gyeonggi-do South Korea
Imjingak park was built to console those from both sides of Koreas who can no longer return to their hometowns, friends, and families because of the division of Korea. It contains many statues and monuments regarding the Korean War. The “Freedom Bridge,” where repatriated POWs and soldiers returning from the North is seen lying across the Imjin river.

Pass By: Tong-il Daegyo Bridge, Majeong-ri, Munsan-eup, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea
Unification bridge is most notably remembered by a travelling of 1001 cows led by Chung-Ju-Yung, the founder of Hyundai Industry. At the historic moment of first South-North summit taking place, Chung crossed the border with the cattle in an wishful act to stabilize the relation between two Koreas. During his young days, Chung had stolen a cow from his parents in North Korea to pay for his move to the city.

Stop At: DMZ, Munsan-eup, Majeong-ri Imjingak Tourist information center, Paju, Gyeonggi-do South Korea
DMZ Theater and Exhibition Hall is a place where the visitors can watch a video clip providing detailed information on the 4 secret tunnels and the history of Korean war. The exhibition displays information on various incidents that took place in DMZ, even after the armistice.

Pass By: The Third Tunnel, Nosang-ri, Jangdan-myeon, Paju, Gyeonggi-do 10800 South Korea
The Third Infiltration Tunnel is one of four known tunnels under the border between North and South Korea. Discovered in 1978, the tunnel is 1mile long. It penetrates 435 meters south from the military demarcation line, and can coordinate 30,000 men in a single hour. Convincingly built to perform a rapid raid action to the South, North Korea was blamed for threatening the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement by United Nations upon its discovery.

Stop At: Dora Observatory, Jeomwon-ri, Gunnae-myeon, Paju, Gyeonggi-do 413-920 South Korea
This observatory provides vernaculars that the visitors can use to look at the North Korean propaganda village. Industrial district of Kaesong City, which is the third largest city in the North, also comes into view. This place is the closest point to the North that you can approach from South Korea.

Dorasan Station is a railway station that used to connect North and South Korea. Trains travelled to both sides with goods and materials until 2008. Although this large station is now left out of operation, it remains symbolic of the hope for eventual Korean Unification.

Upon your choice, we will first visit a Hanbok Rental shop to try the Korean traditional dress(Optional). You can stroll inside Changdeokgung palace wearing Hanbok. Wearing the dress will leave you both a special memory and dreamy pictures of ancient charm.

Changdeokgung Palace was the second grand royal villa built in 1405. It was the principal palace for many kings of Joseon Dynasty, and is the most well-preserved of their five remaining palaces.

This palace is considered as a historically significant attraction that represents the beauty of Korea. Along with the beauty of Huwon, the Secret Garden, Changdeokgung Palace was chosen as the UNESCO World Heritage in 1997.

Bukchon Hanok Village is home to hundreds of traditional houses called hanok, that date back to the Joseon Dynasty. We will go stroll in this labyrinth of traditional homes cramped together, even sharing walls. Created by the first city-planner of Korea, these intimate structures will delight you as you discover your way around the hillside village.

Stop At: Insadong, Insa-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul South Korea
Insadong is a district well-known for hosting generations-old antique and traditional craft stores of all kinds, ranging from ceramics, caligraphy, and theater masks to embroidery. The hidden joy of this wide art street is enjoying a cup of traditional jujube tea in an old cafe secluded in small streets! Visit Ssamziegil Plaza to be amused by all kinds of creative home-goods and decorative-pieces.

Jongmyo Shrine was a primary place of worship for kings throughout Joseon Dynasty. This place hosts ancestral tablets of Joseon kings and queens. The musical memorial service, called Jongmyo Jaerye, is said to be the oldest complete ceremony in the world, and was carried out here in obedience to the king’s order.

Let's try some street food! Gwangjang Market was the first permanent market in Korea and it continues to thrive today. The second floor of the market is filled with silk, satin, and linen bed-sheet stores, which are the largest and most famous in Seoul.

Even though the goods are not brand-name products, the wide selection of high quality goods at inexpensive prices makes it an enjoyable shopping experience.

However, the highlight of this market is not the fabrics. The fascinating part is discovering the animated food stalls, also popularized among foreigners by a recent Neflix show. We will go sampling some of the best Korean street foods here. The specialties in this market are octopus tartar and mung-bean pancakes. You will also be introduced to eccentric Korean foods such as steamed pork feet, blood sausage, and spicy chicken feet.

Take in the breathtaking 360-degree view of the Seoul Metropolis! The top of the tower is at almost 480m above sea level, including Namsan Mountain(243m) and the tower’s own height(236.7m).

The tower was first established as a broadcast tower to send out TV and radio signals in 1969. As of now, it has become one of the representative landmarks and multi-cultural venues in Seoul. At the tower, you can check out other highlights including the famous 'Locks of Love' and ancient beacon mounds.

Myeong-dong is one of the primary shopping districts in Seoul. Many brand name shops, cosmetic stores, and department stores line the streets and alleys. Common products for sale include clothes, shoes, cosmetics and accessories. Unlike Namdaemun or Dongdaemun, many designer brands are sold in Myeong-dong.

The streets are filled with abundance of street food vendors. Enjoy your evening in this town, which seems to have forgotten the night.
