Transport

In the countryside, the Russian 4WD van will be your transportation. These 4x4 vehicles are specifically tuned for the rough off-roading thatโ€™s inevitable when traveling in the wilds of Mongolia. They provide good seats and are well maintained while offering good luggage space, seat belts and speed. Horse trekking is one of the main adventures in this tour, so horse trekking is a necessary activity. You will be packing your items on the pack of horses and trek to the Tsaachin community.

Flights

You will be flying to the north from Ulaanbaatar and will fly back to Ulaanbaatar by a domestic airline.

Accommodation

During the journey, you will be staying at a beautiful ger camp, tent, guesthouse and Teepee.

  • Day 1 City Tour - Welcome Dinner

      City Tour - Welcome Dinner

      Depending on the arrival time todayโ€™s schedule is quite flexible.  After meeting your guide you can check into your hotel or start the city tour right away (We can make the arrangements once we have the details of your arrival). 

      Take a guided tour of the Chinggis Khaan Museum to learn about Mongolian heritage and visit the imposing Sukhbaatar Square. In the evening enjoy a traditional music and dance performance at the Tumen Ekh ensemble and after the show head out for a welcome dinner at one of the nicest restaurants in Ulaanbaatar.

  • Day 2 Fly To Murun And Drive Into The Wilderness

      Fly To Murun And Drive Into The Wilderness

      After breakfast in the hotel, you will be met by your driver in the morning (departure will be confirmed as soon as you book the trip), transfer to the airport and fly north to Murun in the northern region of Mongolia. The flight is just over an hour,  and upon landing, you will be met by our local driver. Take a stroll around town and the local market, then have lunch in a local eatery. Then in the afternoon, board the off-road vehicle and set off north-west towards the mystical Taiga. You will camp halfway, and the exact campsite location will depend on weather conditions. You will camp tonight among the scenic hills and forested valleys, around the midpoint to the Taigaโ€™s boundary. In the evening, enjoy the freshly prepared dinner.

  • Day 3 Off-Road Drive To Tsagaannuur And Ger Stay

      Off-Road Drive To Tsagaannuur And Ger Stay

      In the morning pack up the tents and continue the scenic off-road drive to Tsagaannuur a remote outpost village located at the boundary of the taiga. The drive may be anywhere between 6 to 8 hours, the exact time will depend on weather and trail conditions. You will stay tonight in a guesthouse that has showers. while you rest in the camp, your guide will arrange border permits that will be required for tomorrow.

  • Day 4 Enter Taiga And Trek On Horseback

      Enter Taiga And Trek On Horseback

      After breakfast in the guesthouse drive 20 km to the meeting point with your local Tsaatan guides, crossing a river. This is the furthest point for a 4WD vehicular access - itโ€™s on horseback or by foot from now on only. After preparing the horses and packing all the equipment and supplies there will be a brief instruction on horseback riding, after which mount your horse and enter the taiga. Pack horses will carry all the luggage, equipment and provisions, and you will be accompanied by a local cook, Tsaatan wranglers, and your Mongolian guide. Depending on the time of the year, the ride may take from 3 to 7 hours as Tsaatan tribes are nomadic, and change their location frequently. Once you arrive, meet your host family of reindeer herders and spend the evening together socializing by their Teepee. This is also a good time to exchange gifts. After dinner, enjoy your first night sleeping in a Teepee.

      Visiting Tsaachin Communities

      Spend today with the Tsaachin family and learn about their way of life, their customs, and traditions. You may have an opportunity to venture out to visit another family living nearby too, and depending on your guidesโ€™ decision, you may spend tonight with them too. Today is also an excellent time for taking in the breathtaking scenery of the taiga and for photography. You will also be able to help with reindeer milking or herding โ€“ and you may also be able to try to ride one.

  • Day 6 Visiting Tsaachin Communities

      Visiting Tsaachin Communities

      Today continue your interaction with the Tsaachin families, and explore the area on horseback. In the evening you will ride to visit an authentic local shaman. Shamanism was banned for 70 years under communist rule but prevailed in these remote parts. Tsaachin considers Shamanism not as a religion, but rather as a way to communicate with the souls of people who lived long ago. The shamanic ritual usually takes place around midnight (If their spirit is not willing they do not do the ritual) โ€“ enjoy your evening around the campfire under the vast Mongolian sky.

      Overnight stay in a shared Teepee. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be prepared by our cook.

  • Day 7 Horse Trek - Return To Tsagaannuur

      Horse Trek - Return To Tsagaannuur

      Today you will part with your Tsaatchin hosts and ride back to the meeting point with the vehicle. You need to cover 15-25km today on horseback in muddy terrain, which will take a good half of the day. Continue in the vehicle to Tsagaannuur, where you will stay in the local ger camp again, and enjoy a restaurant meal and shower, before settling into your gers.

  • Day 8 Off Road Driving

      Today you will start the drive back to Khuvsgul. Board the off-road vehicle and stop on the way for lunch. You will camp in the wilderness halfway to the lake, in a scenic location.

  • Day 9 Boating, Hiking And Rest At Khuvsgul Lake

      Boating, Hiking And Rest At Khuvsgul Lake

      After a rustic breakfast continue the drive to Lake Khuvsgul and arrive in time for lunch in the village of Khatgal. Afterwards, board the motor boat for the trip (If available) to a vantage point on the other side of the lake. Climb up and enjoy the views of Khuvsgul Lake and Taiga. After returning by ship to Khatgal, you will have a chance to go off hiking or cycling on the mountain bikes you can rent from the camp on trails alongside the lakeshore. In the evening enjoy dinner at the camp and perhaps some amazing stargazing if the skies are clear.

  • Day 10 Rest Day At The Khuvsgul Lake

      Rest Day At The Khuvsgul Lake

      After a leisurely breakfast explore the town on foot, perhaps visiting the main street, where you can sample local fish or Huushuur. There are also paddle boats for hire on the shore. If you are up for it, you can try bathing in the cold waters of the lake, or you can also kayak on the crystal lake to explore the area, those are available for rent from the camp. In the afternoon, just rest at the camp and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

  • Day 11 Travel To Ulaanbaatar

      Travel To Ulaanbaatar

      In the morning we will travel to Murun town for 100kms. Transfer to the domestic airport and take a flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and transfer to your hotel. Shopping for cashmere and souvenirs. Enjoy a Farewell dinner.
