It is Jalianwala Bagh, At this somber site in 1919 men, women and children in the thousands were peacefully celebrating the Vaisakhi festival in Jallianwala Bagh garden. at that time however, it was illegal to have any public gatherings, to this end the British soldiers gunned down between 379 and 1,000 people with several more being injured. The Martyrs Well is a dismal reminder of the 120 people who jumped inside to their death in a desperate attempt to escape the bullets of the soldiers. This massacre changed the tide in India in terms of governance and was a significant contributing factor to the end of colonial rule and the independence of India. This event had an intense effect on Gandhi, who then started his well-known civil disobedience campaign.
