Several turtle species are protected at this hatchery, one of the main and most important ones being the hawksbill turtle. Their eggs are said to be left uncovered, scattered all over the coast, unprotected from harm’s way, and fishermen bring them into the hatchery in order to save and protect them. The hatchery has been able to release over 100 baby turtles into the sea in the last 2 years since they opened.You could even go on a Boat Ride in the Madu River. The Madu River is a shallow body of water that enters the sea at Balapitiya.
