  • Day 2 Ruben Centre
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Ruben Centre

We hope that everyone is recharged after a lazy night around the pool and is read to head to our first stop within Nairobis communities. After breakfast, we will arrive at the Ruben Centre, located in the Mukuru kwa Ruben slum, and received a guided orientation of the community project.

      โ€‹

The Mukuru area now has a population of over 600,000 and many families live in corrugated iron shacks measuring 10 x 10 feet. Earnings are low and often inadequate to feed their families. Consequently, their children look to other means of survival such as prostitution, drug peddling, begging and other criminal activities.

The Ruben Centre, with its three core areas of Education, Health and Community Development, is attempting to reconcile some of the hardships that the residents of Mukuru face. Today you will be exposed to all of the areas and see which one resonates the most with you, then you will spend more time there if you like. Before our tour we will be completing various fundraiser to support the Ruben Centre and in this instance will be funding the primary school of 3,000 students first ever computer lab. Please see the links below for more information.

      โ€‹

We will head back to camp after spending the day in the community where you will have a the option to eating in or heading into town to try some local cuisine.

      โ€‹

After breakfast we have an optional excision to the Giraffe Centre, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Nairobi National Park, where you will get a taste of what is to come on a safari. Going with a local guide also means gleaning more insight into the cityโ€™s history and culture.

      โ€‹

We will have a couple of breaks along the day, then head back to our rooms for a rest and chance to get changed before it is time to head up to the Ole Serini Rooftop pool to watch the sunset over the Nairobi National Park. We will enjoy a nice relaxing evening up here with dinner and a couple of quiet drinks for those who wanted to lounge around and connect with their new friends.

  • Day 4 Special Needs School & Kibera Slum
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Special Needs School & Kibera Slum

Today is a special day and one that we have no doubt will find a place in your heart for a long time to come. After breakfast, we will arrive at the Edmund Rice Centre Nairobi (ERCN), located in the Kibera slum and spend the afternoon with the staff and families, and hear their stories.

Kibera is a dangerous place to live and there are many health related issues within the slum, and the most common diseases include malaria, typhoid, dysentery, tuberculosis and AIDS. The Kibera slum is the largest in Kenya and has an estimated  population of over 500,000 to 1,000,000 people. We will have the opportunity to safely explore the slum and spend some time in a the home of a local family from the ERCN.

ERCN is community-based organisation that provides educational, vocational and livelihood services to vulnerable communities living in the informal settlement. The project aims to enhance learning and developmental outcomes for 77 Children with intellectual and Autism spectrum disorder, by improving their cognitive and adaptive abilities. The project is funded by donors, and lacks substantial infrastructure and resources, so before departure we will be raising funds to fund a playground for the children and then spending the day getting our hands dirty putting it all together. Please see the links below for more information.

      โ€‹
