Day 1: To Tarangire National Park

Pick up from Moshi drive to Tarangire National park, game drive with picnic lunch, dinner and overnight at JamboCampsite/Tarangire Safari Lodge. Whatโ€™s likely to see at Tarangire National park! Herds of up to 300 elephants graze the dry river bed for underground streams, while migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the attenuation lagoons. Itโ€™s the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem a smorgasbord for predators and the one place in Tanzania where dry country antelope such as the majestic fringe-eared Oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk are regular experiential. For the period of rainy season, the seasonal visitors spread out over 20,000 sq km ranges until they wear out the green plains and the river calls once more. But Tarangireโ€™s herds of elephant are easily encountered, wet or dry. The swamps, tinged green year round, are the focus for 550 birdโ€™s varieties, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the World. On drier ground you find the Kori bustard, the heaviest world-flying birds; the stockingthighed Ostrich, the world largest birds; and small parties of ground hornbillโ€™s noisy like turkeys. More eager birds-lovers might keep an eye open for screeching flocks of the brightly colorful yellow- collard lovebirds, and the somewhat drabber rufous-tailed weaver and ashy starling โ€“ all endemic to the dry savannah of the north central Tanzania. Disused termite mounds are often frequented by colonies of the attractive dwarf mongoose, and pairs of red-and yellow barbet, which draw attention to themselves by their loud, clockwork like duet ting. Tarangireโ€™s pythons climb trees, as do its lions and leopards, lounging in the branches where the fruit of the sausage tree disguises the twitch of a tail. Best time;Year round but dry season (June โ€“ September)for sheer number of animals.
