On a little hill near Sama Village is an old gompa (Pungyen gompa), a monastery with great views of the glacier.

Pungyen, named after Manaslu, means "bracelet," which perfectly describes the twin peaks. Its construction was disrupted by destruction a year after the first failed Japanese attempt to climb Manaslu, which locals believed angered the gods.
