  • Day 1 Day 1: Arrival In Kathmandu & Transfer To Hotel.

      On arrival at Kathmandu airport you will be met by a representative from Sherpa Expedition & Trekking and taken you to your 3 star hotels in and around Thamel โ€“ the tourist hub of Kathmandu. You can rest at you hotel or wander around Thamel and do some last minute shopping before we head off tomorrow. Tonight we will put on a welcome dinner accompanied by a Nepalese cultural dance where you will meet your fellow trekkers.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Kathmandu Sightseeing And Trek Preparation Day.

      This morning we set out on a tour of Kathmandu and visit many World Heritage Sites including the historic Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous โ€™Monkey Templeโ€™ (Swayambhunath) and Buddhist temple (Bouddhanath) which happens to be one of the largest stupas in the world. At around midday we will have a pre-trip discussion where we can meet our trek leader and other team members.

      This morning we fly to Tumlingtar where we will meet the rest of the members who will be accompanying us on the trek. We will then drive to the small Gurung settlement of Chichira where we will stay overnight.

      Early this morning we will follow the trail to Num through several charming villages and through lush mountain forests. Num sits on a ridge from where we have some great panoramic views.

      This morning we have a steep descent through forests and terraced farms down to the Barun River. Once we cross the river we have a steep ascent up through the forest. We then arrive at Seduwa which is where Makalu Barun National Park begins and where we are asked to register our permits. Tonight we camp at the top end of the village.

      Today we follow a trail that leads down to the Kasuwa Khola (river) and then across the hills through rice fields until we reach the stunning village of Tashi Gaon from where we enjoy some great views of the Himalayas. We will stay here overnight.

      Today we have a physically challenging trek ahead of us at higher elevations. Once we get to the top of the ridge we head down through the forest, cross the river and then climb again on a steep trail to the ridge at Kharka. The trail then heads down to Khongma Danda where we will stay the night.

      Today it is a very important time where we focus on acclimatizing before heading higher. Health specialists strongly recommend we spend the day being active, rather than sitting idle. This time spent acclimatizing will prepare us as we ascend to higher altitudes and cross Shipton La Pass (4220m). You can also help this process by taking short treks around the village. 

  • Day 9 Day 9: Trek From Khongma Danda To Dobate; Duration 6-7 Hours.

      Today we will discover how well we handle the higher altitudes as we ascend to Shipton La Pass (4220m). The trek of six to seven hours today takes us by Kalo Pokhari (3930m - lake), across Keke La Pass (4170m) and  offers incredible views of  Mt.Chamlang (7319m), Peak 6 (6524m) and Peak 7 (6758m). After crossing the Keke La Pass we descend through the gorgeous valley to Donate where we will stay the night.

      Today on the trail we head through a rhododendron forest and then to the Barun River and into the valley. The trail is quite steep and you will need to tread carefully for the first couple of hours. We then ascend to Yangri Kharka Village located at the end of the valley where we will stay the night.

      Today we follow the trail through the valley in forests and past Yaks grazing at these high meadows. In the early stage of this trek we are surrounded by towering valley walls. We will then arrive at Merek and then head uphill to where there are more amazing views of the Himalayas. We will stay the night at Langmale Kharka.

      We have a grueling day ahead of us as we climb to higher altitudes where it is physically more demanding as we make our way to Makalu Base Camp. We first head up to Shershong and then on to Makalu Base Camp. The trail, from Shershong, offers eye-catching views over glaciers and snow covered mountains, especially of Mt. Makalu. Tonight we will stay at Makalu Base Camp among the mountains.

      Today we can relish the thought of having climbed to this high altitude while taking in the sights around Makalu Base Camp. It is an unforgiving bleak terrain with Barun Glacier just above it. From here we can see the south face of Makalu and have panoramic views of Mt.Everest and Mt. Lhotse. We will stay the night at Makalu Base Camp.

      Today we have a six to seven-hour trek leaving base camp and heading back down to Langmale Kharka (4100m) and to Merek then through the valley. On our descent, we pass through Shershong, Langmale Kharka, Merek and through the valley finally until we come to Yangri Kharka.

      From Yangri Kharka we descend past rock falls, into the green forests, and the valley as we make our way towards Dobate. We follow the trail on the banks of the Barun River until we arrive at Dobate where we stay the night.

      This morning we initially head to Mumbuk and pass through fir and rhododendron forests along the trail. We then cross Keke La Pass, Tutu La Pass (Shiptonโ€™s Pass), Kauma La Pass and then on to Khongma Danda where we will stay overnight.

      The trek of around four to five hours today takes us through dense forests and then to the predominantly Sherpa village of Tashi Gaon where we stay overnight. 

  • Day 18 Day 18: Trek From Tashigaon To Seduwa (1,500M/4922 Ft) Duration 4-5 Hours.

      Today we retrace our footsteps and head back down on a four to five-hour trek and then exit the Makalu Barun National Park and continue down to the Barun River. After crossing the hillsides and passing through villages we eventually come to Seduwa where we stay overnight.

      Today we follow an undulating trail and pass through dense green forest until we come to the Sherpa village of Num where we will stay overnight.

      Once again we retrace our footsteps for six to seven hours and head to Chichira where we have our last views of Mt. Makalu. We will stay the night at Tumlingtar and relax after this tough trek to Makalu Base Camp. We can congratulate ourselves on achieving our goals.

      This morning we have a scenic flight back to Kathmandu and can look back at the mountains that have been home for more than two weeks. After we arrive at Kathmandu we can either relax at our hotel or roam around Thamel to do some final shopping. Tonight Sherpa Expedition & Trekking will put on a farewell dinner to celebrate the completion of this grueling trip to Makalu Base Camp. We will take you back to your hotels after dinner.

      Our journey in Nepal comes to an end today! A Sherpa Expedition and Trekking representative will drop you at the airport approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight. On your way home you may already be planning another adventure in to this wonderful mountainous and diverse country.
