  • Day 1 Moshi - Machame Gate
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Moshi - Machame Gate

Machame Gate to Machame Camp Elevation (ft): 5,400ft to 9,400ft, Distance: 11 km, Hiking Time: 5-7 hours, Habitat: Rain Forest 6 Days Kilimanjaro hiking Machame route begins with the drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. We now leave the park gate and walk through the rainforest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.

  • Day 2 Machame Gate - Machame Camp
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Machame Gate - Machame Camp

The second day continues through increasingly sparse trees and bushes into moorlands. The day finishes with Shira Camp, which is on a small plateau in the high moorlands, and features views of Kibo in the northwest and Mount Meru towards the necked ravens can be seen throughout the day. There is also a set of small caves a short walk from the campsite known as the Shira Caves.

Elevation (ft): 9,400 ft to 12,500 ft

      Distance: 5 km

      Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

      Habitat: Moorland

  • Day 3 Shira Camp - Barranco Camp
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Shira Camp - Barranco Camp

From the Shira Plateau, we will continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the Sharkโ€™s Tooth (elevation 4650 m/15,250 ft). Shortly after the tower, we will come to the second junction which goes to the Arrow Glacier. We will now continue down to the Barranco Camp. Although you end the day around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

  • Day 4 Barranco Camp - Barafu Camp
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Barranco Camp - Barafu Camp

After breakfast, we will leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge up the Barranco Wall (elevation 4250 m/13,900 ft), through the Karanga Valley (elevation 4050 m/13,250 ft), to the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We will then continue up to the Barafu Camp. You have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we will make camp with views of the summit in the distance.

  • Day 5 Summit - Mweka Camp
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Summit - Mweka Camp

The summit is usually attempted on the very early morning of the sixth day (around midnight). Barafu is also used as a summit campsite for the Umbwe route. Trekkers typically take somewhere between five and seven hours to ascend, using headlamps and cold-weather gear. Making the ascent on a full moon or shortly thereafter can make the head torch unnecessary. The first milestone, generally reached shortly after dawn, is Stella Point (18,652 feet (5,685 m)), which is on the crater rim. Following Stella Point, the trail continues for another 60 minutes to Uhuru Peak, the summit.

The descent back to Barafu takes roughly four hours. Some trekkers slide down the slope, which entails skidding/running down the loose gravel at medium speed. From Barafu, trekkers typically take a short break, and continue downwards through the alpine desert and ensuing moorlands to Mweka Camp.
