From Nepalgunj, there are only a few flights per week early in the morning to the Himalayan terrain of Juphal. The 40-minute flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal is short but thrilling. Upon arrival, the trail to Dunai descends southeast past houses and fields to the village of Dangi Bhara. Continuing through fields of maize, we cross a stream and reach the settlement of Kala Gaura. From there, we follow the south bank of the river all the way to Dunai. After a brief narrowing of the valley, we pass Roop Ghar, cross a broad flat meadow fringed with pine, and see the large complex of hospital buildings on the opposite bank. We enter Dunai, the district headquarters, a large village with paved streets and lined houses. We will spend the night at a tented camp. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

The trail continues past the fields of Tarakot, leading to a campsite near the Chyada Khola, just below the Tarakot village fortress. We will spend the night at a tented camp.

We begin by climbing gently through fields of pink flowering buckwheat, veering south into a side valley with views of Putha Himal. We cross the Yalkot Khola and ascend to a trail that follows the south side of the river. Above Tarakot, the Thulo Bheri is known as the Barbung Khola. Staying mostly elevated above the river, we climb to 2670 meters before descending past cypress trees and a white chorten to a 120-meter-long, high suspension bridge at Laisicap (2600 meters). As we continue, weโ€™ll spot Kanigaon village high above the trail and might see the white-breasted dipper, a bird found only in western Nepal. After visiting the Chhandul Gompa, we rejoin the main trail and proceed through cedar forests as the valley walls start to close in. We navigate three-sided tunnels blasted out of the rock through the steepest part of the gorge, with the river dropping sharply beside the trail. The gorge begins to widen near Laini. We will spend the night at a tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

From there, the trail takes a highly enjoyable high traverse through a steep gorge, eventually descending to cross the cascades of the Tilba Khola at 3570 meters. We then climb another ridge and descend to the Chyugur Khola at 3520 meters. A rough stone house under a rock provides cave-like accommodation, and we may spot Crag Martins soaring high above the gorge. We cross a suspension bridge to the riverโ€™s left bank and then to the right bank to reach the mule caravan stop of Nawarpani. We will spend the night at a tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

As the gorge narrows, we cross to the true left bank and pass a small cave before tackling a thrilling section of trail chiseled into the sheer rock face. We then recross the Tarap Chu at Tal Tole (3680m) and navigate through a narrow slot canyon. From there, we climb the east bank through a classic eroded Trans-Himalayan landscape, reaching a chorten on a ridge at Serkam (3870m). After descending and crossing back to the west bank, we proceed into the Sishul Khola, where we reach a campsite with a cave at 3840m. The trail, rocky and rugged, traverses beneath cliffs to a bridge at 3920m. Crossing to the east bank, we find a side valley leading up the Lang Chu to the remote village of Lang.

Continuing north up the Tarap Chu, we climb slowly alongside the river, passing mani walls and eroded cliffs, and reach the village of Do Tarap. Keep an eye out for blue sheep along this stretch. The views over the valley are spectacular, and we can visit the surrounding monasteries: Ribo Bhumpa Gompa, Doro Gompa, and Shipchok Gompa. We will camp overnight and enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

From Numa La Base Camp, we cross a stream on rocks and then climb steeply up yak trails on a grassy slope to a ridge with several mani walls and a chorten at 4580 meters. Continuing along the ridge, we reach a grassy knoll and a small stream at 4700 meters before descending into a high glacial bowl at 4960 meters. After crossing a small stream, we undertake a long climb up a moraine to the Numa La Pass at 5290 meters. From this high pass, we enjoy spectacular views of Shey Shikar (6139 meters) and Kanjeralwa to the northeast, and the tip of Dhaulagiri I (8167 meters) to the southeast.

We then descend into a scenic U-shaped, rocky valley. The trail turns sharply left, passing yak caravans hauling timber, and offers opportunities to spot blue sheep and snow leopards in this remote area. The valley drops down to join another large valley from the east. We follow the river downstream, navigating past dramatically eroded cliffs, and make a sharp U-turn to enter another large side valley. We walk around the ridge into the valley and gently climb to reach the pastures at Pelung Tang. The spectacular glaciated peak at the head of the valley is Norbu Kang (6005 meters). We will camp here for the night. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

At 4390 meters, the trail turns a corner and enters a vast valley, making a final steep descent on switchbacks to the beautiful Dajok Tang, characterized by a large moraine and numerous waterfalls. Snowy peaks, including Kagmara (5960 meters), crowd the horizon at the valleyโ€™s end. We will spend the night at a tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
