During our journey we will pass through colorful villages that have been here for thousands of years.

Chachani is one such town that is surrounded by Andean peaks and that is full of llamas and alpacas. The blue of the sky is set off by the white of the glaciers covering the mountains. The shepherds that are watching their flocks of llamas and alpacas sing out beautiful melodies that help them pass their time out in the fields. Along the way you will be amazed by the Andean flora and fauna. There will be short stops that we can make so that you can snap some photos of the marvelous Andes of Peru and the national reserve of Pampa Cañahuas.

In the afternoon we will arrive at the town of Chivay which is very close to the canyon. Out of these reeds they can produce just about everything that they need to live comfortably out in the middle of the lake. They construct their boats out of tortora reeds. If well they are well built, a reed boat can last up to 6 months.

  • Day 9 Day 9: Tour To Chinchero, Moray, Salineras, Ollantaytambo And Connection To Aguas Calientes Town
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 9: Tour To Chinchero, Moray, Salineras, Ollantaytambo And Connection To Aguas Calientes Town

If you are one of those travelers who loves to explore and to experience unique adventures, then this tour is definitely for you. The Moray – Salineras tour begins at 3400 masl. in the city of Cusco.

We´ll leave Cusco and travel to the important agricultural center of Moray. There we can observe the great skill that the Incas exibiited through their farming techniques and by how they adapted plants to different climatic zones. You will see great circular terraces where the temperature changed depending on the altitude. It is thought by historians that the Incas studied climatic conditions and soil properties here. They learned how to grow and adapt different kinds of food crops that originally grew in different regions of their empire. As you descend the terraces, the temperature increases. The Incas had extraordinary knowledge of climates and microclimates. On the tour we will be able to meet farmers and shepherds who work in the local fields. They cultivate native produce and they pasture their llamas and alpacas in the high country.

Next, we will go visit the traditional town of Maras. There we will make a short stop to see the pretty houses which feature the coats-of-arms of Incan nobles who lived here during Incan and colonial times. The town of Maras used to be inhabited by Incan nobles who originally lived in Cusco. They were on their way to Ollantaytambo when they settled in Maras. Today the lintel of each house shows the coat-of-arms of the family. This indicates how important this town was during the time of the Spanish Conquest.

We will continue on to the salt mines of Salineras, This is an impressive site that consists of over 5000 small wells where salt is collected. Some of these wells are very old. The Incas mined salt at this site, and this practice continued throughout the reign of the Spanish viceroys. The local people let the salt water flow into the depressions which they have dug out. Then the sun evaporates the water, leaving behind a crust of salt which is then collected and sold on the local market. We will finish up our tour by stopping in Urubamba for a good lunch. After lunch we will go to Ollantaytambo and catch the train to Aguas Calientes town.
