Today we will visit many of the ancient fortresses (dzongs), including Zurig Dzong and Ta Dzong which is now the national museum and offers views of Paro. Our next destination is Rinpung Dzong (Fortress on a Heap of Jewels). We then follow the trail to Paro Chhu (river) via the oldest bridge in Bhutan (Nyima Zam) and then to Ugyen Pelri Palace and into Paro township. We then go by road to Kyichu Lhakhang that is said to be one of the oldest temples in Bhutan with its magic orange tree that bears fruit year-round. From here we head up the valley to Drukgyel Dzong, constructed in 1648 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to protect the northern route to Tibet. It is only two days from here until you reach the Tibetan border. We will then head back to our hotel for dinner.

Day 3: Chele La Pass And Hike To Kila Nunnery (Optional Bike Descents)

This morning we travel by car to Chele La Pass (3,988m/12,499ft) being the highest altitude road pass in Bhutan along a 35-kilometer road through pine and rhododendron forests. In clear weather, you can see as far as Mt Jomolhari (7314m/23,996ft), Bhutanโ€™s second tallest mountain, and down to the Haa Valley. We then hike through a dense rhododendron forest to Kila Gompa, home to Buddhist nuns (Anim Dratshang) living in this very peaceful location. The nunnery was rebuilt in 1986 after a fire destroyed it. From here we head downhill and if you choose, you can take a bike all the way down to Paro Valley. If you decide not to bike down to the valley, we can drive from Chele La Pass to the other side to the Haa Valley. On occasions, the pass is inaccessible due to snow. We will arrange an alternative if this is the case. We will then return to our hotel for dinner.
