Day 2: Paro Sightseeing And Drive To Thimpu.

Today is a jam-packed day. We will first visit the ruined fortress of Drukgyel Dzong, a fortress and Buddhist monastery in the upper part of the Paro District, Bhutan. The Dzong was thought to have been built by Tenzin Drukdra in 1649 to celebrate a victory over the invading Tibetans. We will also hike to Taktsang monastery, a 45-minute steep trek through villages and a pine forest. The monastery sits precariously on the edge of a huge granite cliff 800 meters from the Paro valley. In the afternoon we head through the beautiful valley to the museum located within the Ta-Dzong building. It was established in 1968 by the third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The seven floors museum has on display various aspects of Bhutanese culture and history dating back to the 7th century. A short walk from here downhill is the Rinpung Dzong which is the administrative center and school for monks. In the afternoon we drive for around two hours and 65 kilometers to the capital Thimphu where we will stay overnight in a 3 star hotel.

A little further on we can look down on the beautiful Thimphu Valley. We will also visit the new Drupthob Nunnery Monastery. We will then drive for about three hours to Wangdue Phodrang via the Dochula Pass (3100m). In clear weather you can see the eastern mountain ranges as well as the tallest mountain in Bhutan, Mt.Gangkhar Puensum (7570m). Heading through the pass we drop down to the valleys of Lobesa and on to Wangdue Phodrang Dzong to the markets. We will stay here overnight at a 3 star hotel.

This stunning fortress is built between two rivers and has survived glacial floods and fire. Every year during the month of February a procession known as the Punakha Serda commemorates the Bhutanese victory over the Tibetans. In the afternoon we will drive for around 3 hours to Thimphu in time for lunch and then drive another 2 hours to Paro via the oldest building in Bhutan, the Simtokha Dzong that is today a Buddhist university. Tonight we stay at a 4 star hotel with meals provided.
