  • Day 1 Day 1: Arrival In Kathmandu & Transfer To Hotel.

      A representative from Sherpa Expedition & Trekking will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. After arriving at your hotel you can rest and the explore Thamel and buy anything you require for the trek. There will be a pre-trek meeting where you will be introduced to your trek leader/guide. At this meeting we ask that you bring your passport, three copies of passport-size photos and a readable copy of your travel insurance policy. You will also be asked to clear the due balance, if any, and sign the legally binding trip form as well as the non-liability disclaimer. You will stay overnight in a hotel near Thamel, the tourist hub of Kathmandu.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Fly From Kathmandu To Bhadrapur And Drive To Taplejung/Suketar (2,420M) Duration 8-10 Hours.

      We depart on a morning flight (45 minutes) to Bhadrapur and then travel to Ilam, a well known tea brand name in Nepal and its largest tea plantation. We then drive for 4 hours before reaching Taplejung where we will spend our second night. 

  • Day 3 Day 3: Drive To Ranipul And Trek To Shekhathum (1,500M) Duration 5-6 Hours.

      Today we drive for about 4 to 5 hours to Ranipool and then trek to Sekathum. We cross a bridge over the river that has its origins at the Yalung glacier. We then cross a ridge before reaching the Ghunsa Khola Valley. We then come to the junction of the Tamur and Ghunsa Khola (rivers) and will set up camp beside the river at Sekathum.

      After leaving Sakathum we follow the trail northeast alongside the banks of the Ghunsa Khola and then ascend higher heading to Kanchenjunga Base Camp. The trek takes us across an exposed landscape and a steep ascent to the Tibetan village of Amjilosa where we will stay overnight.

      Today we follow the trail through rhododendron and bamboo forests. Climbing higher we come to a massive waterfall on the side of the river that signals the route we take to Gyable where we have fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.

      After leaving Gyabla the trail heads through a large meadow, a small village, and over a small hill. We then descend and cross the river before reaching Gunsa Village, a large Tibetan Buddhist village with its traditional wooden houses, a school, health post, and its own hydroelectricity power plant. The village lies within the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and has several Gompas (Buddhist monasteries) where people can sit, relax, and talk about their journey. Tonight we stay in Gunsa that happens to be the very last village in the valley.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Acclimatization Day In Ghunsa.

      Ghunsa is an ideal location, and at a high enough altitude, for us to acclimatize. It is recommended by health professionals that during the acclimatization period we stay active. To stay active we will trek across the river to an altitude of 400 metres above the village, taking about 4 hours return. For the rest of the day we will stroll around this quaint Tibetan village, chatting to the locals and observe their rich culture.

      Today we trek for around five to six hours through stunning pine and rhododendron forests following the south bank of the Ghunsa Khola (river) passing many chortens and mani walls on the trail. After trekking across several hills and glacier moraines we reach Kambachen, a small Tibetan village with only a dozen houses and surrounded by mountains. Tonight we stay in this quaint village.

      Once we reach the source of the Ghunsa Khola (river) we will look for a place to camp just north of the Kanchenjunga glacier. We will then cross a plateau past Lhonak glacier and then come to Lhonak. Regardless of the cold and high elevation, the spectacular views of Wedge Peak, Mera peak, Nepal peak, and Twins will captivate you. We will spend the night in Lhonak.

  • Day 10 Day 10: Trek To Kanchenjunga Base Camp (5140M) And Back To Lhonak Duration 6-7 Hours.

      Today we head in an easterly direction still staying close to the Lhonak Glacier on the northern ridges until we reach Kanchenjunga Base Camp at Pangpema which is an ideal place to get your cameras rolling! After this incredible experience we return to Lhonak for the night.

      Today we will retrace our steps back to Ghunsa where we will stay overnight.


  • Day 12 Day 12: Trek To Sele Le Kharka (4200M) Duration 6 Hours.

      We will head up a steep and rocky trail through a forest that then emerges at High Camp. The Sele La Kharka is just above the high pass where we spend the night.

      This is definitely one of the highlights of this trek as we walk through two high passes: Sele La pass (4480m) and Sinion La (4660m). After the final pass we descend for about 1000m to reach Tseram where we will stay the night.

      From Tseram we follow a trail and pass the base of Yalung Glacier into a craggy valley. The peaks in this region span the Nepal and India borders. Ramche has a lake and is where you will see Blue Sheep grazing on the grassy hillsides. From Ramche we trek along a rocky trail and cross moraines before reaching the Oktang Glacier. We will then retrace the trail back to Ramche where we will stay overnight.

      Today we descend along the Simbuwa Khola (river) as we retrace our steps. The descent is naturally much easier and allows us time to take in the views of the surrounding countryside where orchids can be observed along the way. We will stay at Tortong overnight.

  • Day 16 Day 16: Trek To Sekhathum (1680M) Duration 8-9 Hours.

      Most of the day is spent descending on a steep trail. On the trail we pass a steep waterfall and then continue until we reach the junction of the Tamur and Ghunsa Kholas (rivers). We eventually reach Sakathum where we will stay overnight at a guesthouse.

  • Day 17 Day 17: Trek To Tapetok And Drive To Taplejung (1,442M) Duration 6-7 Hours.

      Today we cross Simbu Khola (river) that has its origins at Kanchenjungaโ€™s south base camp. At these lower altitudes we can feel the warmth compared to the cold at higher altitudes. We first come to Chirwa Village after crossing many small streams. Chirwa is an unusual village due to it being set among some large boulders. We then head to the picturesque village of Taplejung where we will stay overnight.

  • Day 18 Day 18: Drive To Bhadrapur (91M) Duration 8-10 Hours.

      We have a long drive in a jeep to Bhadrapur, passing through a number of villages as we head through the valleys. Tonight we will stay at Bhadrapur.

      Today we have a 30 minute scenic flight back to Kathmandu and have our final views of the magnificent snow covered mountains. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking will take you back to your hotel.
