sightseeing tour of some of the historic sites located just north of

Amman. Start with a visit to Umm Qais (130km / approx. 2 hrs.). Known as Gadara in classical times, Umm Qais is a

former Decapolis city perched on a wonderful hilltop overlooking the Northern Jordan Valley, the Sea of Galilee and

the Golan Heights. The village boasts an impressive colonnaded street, a dramatic basilica terrace and the ancient

ruins of two theatres along with sweeping views over the valley.

Continue with a drive through pine forests and olive groves (60km / approx. 1hr 30 mins) to reach the city of Ajloun

then proceed to the castle. Ajloun Castle (more formally known as

Qalโ€™at Ar-Rabad) was built by one of the Islamic governors under

Saladin in1184 AD to control the iron mines of Ajloun. The castle

enjoys a great location offering birdโ€™s-eye views over the

surrounding countryside and over three major wadis (valleys).

Next head to the ancient city of Jerash (30km / approx. 35 mins),

often referred to as โ€˜Pompeii of the Eastโ€™, this is one of the best

preserved classical cities in the region. Enjoy a wander around the

remarkable ancient ruins including visits to the Oval Plaza, the

Temple of Zeus and the South Theatre, the larger of the two

theatres, seating more than 3000 spectators.

plethora of upmarket hotels, high-end restaurants and lively bars

along with some of the cityโ€™s most attractive residential

neighborhoods. Continue with a walk along atmospheric Rainbow

Street which offers a wealth of dining options, cafรฉs and quirky

mins). Madaba, otherwise referred to as the โ€˜City of Mosaicsโ€™ is

best known for its collection of Byzantine-era mosaics. The most

famous of these is the mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy

Land which can be found on the floor of St Georgeโ€™s Church.

Continue with a visit to Mount Nebo, one of the most important

biblical sites where it is believed that Moses first sighted the Holy

Land. A small Byzantine church was built on the site by the early

Christians, and has since been expanded into a vast complex.

During his visit to Jordan in 2000, Pope John Paul II held a sermon

here that was attended by over 20,000 people.

Your final stop today is a visit to Shoubak castle (240km / approx.3 hrs). Perched on a rocky hilltop, this imposing fort

was built by the Crusader King Baldwin I of Jerusalem in AD 1115 to guard the road linking Syria and Egypt โ€” the old

Kingโ€™s Highway. It successfully withstood numerous sieges until it fell to Saladinโ€™s troops in 1189. Enjoy a wander

around the remains of this old castle and admire the spectacular views across the barren landscape.

After finishing your sightseeing tour continue with the drive to Petra (30km /approx. 30mins) arriving late afternoon.
