The trail between Phortse and Pangboche is less traveled and narrow in places, with a dramatic 300-400 meter drop to the Imja Khola below. Pangboche is a sizable village with a population of about 600 and serves as the last major settlement inhabited year-round. It consists of two parts: Upper and Lower Pangboche. Most lodges are located in Lower Pangboche, situated by riverside agricultural fields with stone walls. Upper Pangboche, known for its ancient Riwa Gompa monastery, is the oldest monastery in the Khumbu region. While most trekkers pass through Lower Pangboche on their way up, they often visit Upper Pangboche when returning from Kala Patthar.

Following the Imja Khola, the trail ascends towards the village of Shomare. Beyond this village, we cross the treeline and continue through rolling, arid alpine terrain, characterized by patches of scrub, isolated pastures, and grazing yaks. As we pass through yak pastures and herdsmenโ€™s stone huts at Orsho and Tsuro Wog, the trail turns right and descends to the area near the confluence of the Imja Khola and Khumbu Khola. After crossing a low ridge, we arrive at the expansive settlement of Dingboche. This area is known for its cold and windy conditions, with sub-zero temperatures even during the summer months.

We pass by Dusa, where we glimpse some uninhabited stone huts once used by herdsmen, and continue to Dughla. From there, we reach Chupki Lhara, a site marked by large heaps of stones and prayer flags commemorating mountaineers who lost their lives attempting to climb Mount Everest.

At the top of the valley, we catch a glimpse of Chola Lakeโ€™s blue waters from the high trails. • Day 10 Day 10: Trek Gorak Shep (5160M/16930Ft) And Ebc (5340M/17521Ft) And Back To Gorak Shep
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 10: Trek Gorak Shep (5160M/16930Ft) And Ebc (5340M/17521Ft) And Back To Gorak Shep

Today will be a challenging and strenuous day. We start by traversing a somewhat grassy terrain dotted with scattered boulders, with the snowy walls of towering mountains ahead of us. A 60-meter (200-foot) ascent leads us to the top of the lateral moraine wall of the Changri Glacier, reaching a level spot known as Thangma Riju. From here, we are treated to a spectacular 360-degree panorama, including views of Taboche, the Lobuche peaks, Pumori, the Mahalangur Himal peaks, and the now more visible Changtse in Tibet, with Nuptse dominating the eastern horizon.

We then cross the moraine of the Changri Glacier, which merges with the Khumbu Glacier from the west. Climbing steeply up a rocky slope, we arrive at Gorak Shep, where we get our first view of Kala Patthar. From Gorak Shep, we proceed to Everest Base Camp (EBC). Unlike a viewpoint, EBC offers an immersive experience amidst the mountains. As we walk past the shallow blue waters of Gorak Shep Lake, we can see Changtse peak in Tibet and the Lho La depression ahead. The trail takes us through glaciers, icefalls, frozen meltwater pools, exposed icy walls, and large boulders until we finally reach EBC, marking the end of our trekking and the beginning of the mountaineering phase.

We then return to Gorak Shep for our overnight stay.

Day 11: Trek Kala Patthar (5545M/18193Ft); Return Trek Pheriche (4240M/13911Ft)

Today is the climax of our trek, as we finally meet Everest up close. After an early breakfast, we set out at a steady pace. We begin by crossing the wide, sandy bed of a dried-up lake and navigating steep zigzags to ascend about 100 meters, offering stunning views of Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse. As we climb higher, we are rewarded with grand vistas of the Khumbu Glacier and the Nuptse massif. Our ascent continues to the rocky viewpoint of Kala Patthar. Though the climb is slow and challenging, each step brings us closer to breathtaking views of Everest, and we find ourselves surrounded by an awe-inspiring Himalayan panorama.

After enjoying the view from Kala Patthar, we make a quicker descent. Retracing our steps, we pass through Gorak Shep and Lobuche. Instead of heading back to Dingboche, we descend to Pheriche, following the Khumbu Khola, where we will spend the night.
