Chandragiri Hills offers an ideal quick escape and a captivating oasis just outside Kathmandu. Only 7 km from Thankot, this 2551-meter-high natural retreat feels like a completely different world. The area is surrounded by temperate wilderness and boasts stunning panoramic views of the Himalayas, including one of the closest views of Mount Everest from Kathmandu—a sight not to be missed.

In addition to the breathtaking scenery and fresh forest air, Chandragiri Hills is home to the Bhaleshwor Mahadev temple, an important Hindu site believed to grant wishes. The hills are also historically significant; it was from here that King Prithivi Narayan Shah first saw the beautiful and prosperous Kathmandu Valley, sparking his desire to annex it into his kingdom. Legend has it that the king gained spiritual powers for the unification of Nepal after undergoing intense meditation, or ’sadhana,’ on these hills. Disguised to avoid being recognized by the Malla Kings of the Kathmandu Valley, he climbed the hills to survey the valley.

We invite you to join the Alpine Club of Himalaya for a one-day trip to Chandragiri Hill, a perfect retreat into nature just outside the city.
