  • Day 1 Day 1: Saturday - Pergamon
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 1: Saturday - Pergamon

Duration: 9 am to 5 pm Depart from your hotel in Kusadasi or Selcuk in the morning. Bergama is home to two of the countryโ€™s most celebrated archaeological sites: the Acropolis and the Asklepion of ancient Pergamon both listed among the top 100 historical sites on the Mediterranean. Most of the extraordinary buildings and monuments in Bergama date to the time of Eumenes II (197-159 BC), including the famed library, the terrace of the spectacularly sited hillside theatre, the main palace, the Altar of Zeus and the propylaeum of the Temple of Athena. In the early Christian era, Pergamonโ€™s church was a major center of Christianity and was one of the Seven Churches of Revelation. The ancient city is composed of three main parts: the Acropolis, whose main function was social and cultural as much as it was sacred; the Lower City, or realm of the lower classes; and the Asklepion, one of the earliest medical centres on record. You will return to your hotel after the tour

Following on from the museum we then head to Giza on the outskirts of Cairo to visit the Sphinx and the three great pyramids of Egypt. The Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), an awesome man-made structure constructed of giant stone blocks, together with the smaller pyramids of Khafre (Chephern) and Menkaure (Mycerinus), the majestic sight of these enormous structures rising out of the desert is a breathtaking spectacle. You will have the opportunity to climb down right inside the pyramids if you wish, though your guide cannot accompany you (a limited number of tickets are available for the Great Pyramid). It was linked to Luxor by an extensive avenue, lined with sphinxes, and the whole complex was in turn linked to the Nile via a canal through which moved the sacred boats of the god Amun. Entering through a smaller sphinx-lined avenue, built by Ramesses II, you come to the immense pylon entrance. Inside the huge Courtyard are three chapels dedicated to the gods Amun, Khous and Mut.
