Day 2: Belize Zoo And Xunantunich

This morning you will be transferred to the Cayo District. Along the way you will visit the Belize Zoo and the Xunantunich Maya Site. The Belize Zoo is located at mile marker 31 on the West Highway, about a 40-minute drive from Belize City. Only indigenous species are found at the zoo, all of which have been rescued or donated by owners who were unable to care properly to animals. The "guests" are housed in large compounds that contain what would be their natural habitat. Birds, cats, crocodiles, monkeys, the list seems endless. A great opportunity to see and photograph those beasts of the jungle that are not seen easily in nature. Lunch and a great shopping opportunity will recharge your batteries for afternoon treats. The tour continues along the Carretera del Oeste through San Ignacio in the Cayo District, until we reach the village of San Jose Succotz where a crank ferry takes the vehicle and passengers across the Mopan River. One more mile will take the visitor to the impressive Mayan Site of Xunantunich (The Maiden of the Rock). An important ceremonial center and one of the country's largest excavated sights, the view from the pyramid El Castillo's largest is remarkable.ย  Accommodation.

A full day, this excursion will take the traveler west to the Cayo District, only a few kilometers from the border with Guatemala. At Ixchel Farm, the trails were established under the guidance of Don Elijio Panti, who, until his death at 103 in recent years, he was the country's leading authority on traditional healing. The knowledge has been passed on and the tradition continues. For the visitor, each floor has been named and an explanation has been given on how it should be used for the best effect. At Butterfly Farm, located on the grounds of Chaa Creek Cottages the visitor can witness every stage of the life of a Blue Morpho Butterfly. After a well deserved lunch we visit the Mayan site unusually set of Cahal Pech (Place of the ticks!). Located on the edge of the city of San Ignacio, this site dates back some 3,000 years. The visitor center and your guide will enlighten you more about the mysteries of the Mayans. Accommodation.
