  • Day 1 Day 1: Arusha To Marangu Gate (1980M) โ€“ Mandara Hut (2700M)

      Hiking time: 3-4 hours


      Distance: Approximately 12 kilometres


      Habitat: Montane forest


      After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up from Arusha (1400m) and driven to the Marangu Gate (1980m). At the gate, the porters will organize and pack the belongings for the hike while you and your guide register with the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA). You will then begin your ascent into the rainforest. During this section of the hike, you should expect rain, mud, and fog. Also, be on the look out for wildlife, including Colobus monkeys! After 3-4 hours of ascending, you will reach the Mandara Hut (2700m). Each hut has 6-8 sleeping bunks (sleeps 60 hikers total) with solar generated lighting. Next to the central hut there are flush toilets. The porters, who arrive at the campsite before the clients, will boil water for drinking and washing. The chef will prepare a snack then dinner for the clients. At nighttime, mountain temperatures may drop to freezing so be prepared! overnight stay at Mandara Hut.

      Distance: Approximately 15 kilometres


      Habitat: Moorland


      Following breakfast, hikers will begin their ascent out of the rainforest and into the heather moorland. Hikers will pass the Maundi Crater and are able to climb up to its rim for a spectacular view of the Kibo Crater. In the moorland, you will spot exotic plants, including giant lobelia and groundsel. After 6 hours of hiking, you will reach Horombo Hut (3720m). Horombo Hut sleeps 120 hikers and is located on a small plateau. Similar to the first night, the porters will prepare drinking and washing water for you. You will enjoy evening snacks then dinner prepared by our chef. Be prepared for a cold night as temperatures drop below freezing at this site.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Hike Horombo Hut To Kibo Hut

      Ascending, we now pass the last watering point, walking onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Vegetation begins with upper heathland but then disappears into โ€œmoonscapeโ€.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Hike Kibo Hut To Summit, And Down To Horombo Hut

      Day 4: Hike Kibo Hut To Summit, And Down To Horombo Hut

      Very early in the morning (midnight to 2:00 AM), commence the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilmanโ€™s point located on the crater rim.


      โ€“ Continuing, we now ascend to Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point in Africa. There are unbelievable views at every turn. Have your picture taken at the summit to show your friends and family.

      โ€“ From here we descend, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to the Horombo encampment.

      โ€“ The beginning of this climb is done in the dark and requires headlamps or flashlights.

      โ€“ It will be very cold until you start descending, so you will need all of your warm layers.

      โ€“ This is by far the most difficult part of the trek with many switchbacks. Going slowly โ€œpole poleโ€ and an optimistic attitude will get you there!

      โ€“ Down to 3700m/12,200ft

      โ€“ Distance: 6km/4mi up / 15km/9mi down

      โ€“ Hiking Time: 6-8 hours up / 15km/9mi down

  • Day 5 Day 5: Hike Horombo Hut To Trail Head, Drive To Arusha Or Moshi

      Day 5: Hike Horombo Hut To Trail Head, Drive To Arusha Or Moshi

      After breakfast, a steady descent takes us down through moorland to the Mandara Hut.

      โ€“ Continue descending through a lush forest path to the National Park gate at Marangu. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

      โ€“ Our vehicle will meet you at Marangu gate to drive you back to the hotel or the airport.

      โ€“ Donโ€™t forget to tip your guides and porters. It is time for celebration!
