Day 1: Fly To Mekelle And And Drive To Hame Ela

You will take a morning flight to Mekele. The assigned vehicle and staff will directly take you to Hamedila via Berhale. The Danakil Depression can be said to โ€˜beginโ€™ here. It is one of the most amazing regions of the world but is nonetheless spectacular, full of eye-catching colors, as in the sulfur springs. The desert has several points lying more than 100 meters (328 ft.) below sea level. En route you see many long caravans going to the salt mines and others coming out of the Danakil with their salt loaded camels. Overnight stay at Camp, Hamed Ela.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Trip To Erta Ale Volcano
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 2: Trip To Erta Ale Volcano

Break camp at Hamed Ela and race across the Danakil desert, spotting herds of camels and traditional Afar homes, to Kursawad to make final arrangements for our evening hike to Ertale volcano. Lunch and possibly even tea with the village elder. A slow, but spectacular drive through-hardened magma fields bring us to the base of Mount Ertale where we pause to rest and wait out the heat before our trek. As the sun sets, we leave behind the jeeps and set out for a three-hour hike, accompanied by a camel caravan carrying gear and water, to the edge of Mount Ertale. We camp here for night lit by the stars and glow of the nearby volcano. Overnight stay at Camp, near the edge of the volcano.
