7days Mt. Kilimanjaro through Machame route.

Arrival day: Pick up at Kilimanjaro Airport or at any arrival destination and transfer to Venus hotel in Arusha. www.venushotels.co.tz

Trip Narration: Climbing Kilimanjaro on the Machame route is a more natural climb in comparison to the Marangu Route, which has been modified to make an easier path. The Machame Route is more demanding, much quieter and scenic route but makes climbing Kilimanjaro all the more rewarding. Overnights are spent camping in tents, which are carried and pitched by the accompanying porters. Highlights of this route are the Shira Plateau, Barranco wall and the Karanga Valley reaching the summit via Stella Point.

Because this route is more taxing it is recommended that climbers should be physically fit.

Day 1: Machame Gate (1490m) - Machame camp (2980m)

Hiking time: 7 hours

Distance: About 18 km's

Habitat: Montane forest

Machame gate to Machame hut, from the gate continue up to track which becomes a path after about an hour. It easy to follow as it continues to follow the ridge, raising steadily some steep sections. The gradient eases slightly as the forest merges into heather covered ground. You reach Machame hut in 10km after a 1,200m ascent and 5-7hrs of walking.

Day2: Machame camp (2980m) - Shira camp (3840m)

Hiking time: 6 hours

Distance: About 9 km's

Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Shira (3840m)-Lava Tower (4630m) - Barranco camp (3950m)

Hiking time: 7 hours

Distance: About 15 km's

Habitat: Semi desert

Shira hut to Shira plateau, this is a good place to rest a day to acclimatize. You may spend your time in the camp and snooze in the sun all day.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley Camp

The day will begin with a descent into the Gorge, before we climb its eastern wall where we will enjoy views of Kilimanjaro;s ice fields, an equatorial anomaly. We will continue trekking until we reach our camp in Karanga Valley (13,900 feet, 4-5 hours of walking).

Day 5: Karanga Valley Camp to Barafu Camp

We'll trek up through the Karanga Valley, following the lava ridge to the Barafu camp (15,500 feet, 6-7 hours of walking), where we will overnight.

Day 6: SUMMIT ATTEMPT Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp

Just after midnight, we'll begin our summit attempt, passing between the Rebmann and Tarzel glaciers to the rim at Stella Point. As dawn nears, we'll summit at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 19,340 feet. Uhuru will be the culmination of - and the reward for - 6-7 hours of strenuous hiking. We'll then descend back to Barafu Camp, resting for a while before continuing our descent to Mweka Camp (9,840 feet, 3-4 hours of walking on the descent).
