7-day Tibetan Medicine Tour From Labrang Monastery

Itinerary

D1   Medical College of Labrang Monastery, Xiahe

An English-speaking Tibetan doctor and a monk will show you around the medical college, which is the second largest college of Labrang Monastery, one of the most comprehensive Tibetan Buddhism university monasteries. The garden-like courtyard is surrounded by “Medicine Trees” , which representing the knowledge and theories of Tibetan Medicine. Medicine Buddha and White Tara worshiped here are believed to help people stay away from diseases, and achieve happiness and peace even before death. A traditional Tibetan rite is performed here to pray for your good health.

D2   Tiger Mountain, Dajiutan Grasslands, Labrang

The Tibetan doctor will take you into holy mountains or a valley located on beautiful grasslands nearby, and teach you how to identify and pick medical herbs. The pure nature far away from crowds will make you forget all the troubles and worries.

D3   Tibetan medicine clinic & factory, Labrang  

Booking in advance, you’ll be seeing a Tibetan doctor in the morning, to experience the Tibetan style of diagnosis. If needed, you will be prescribed herb medicine or a massage, which will help you regain energy and balance. In the afternoon, a visit to a Tibetan medicine factory will give your insight into the processing of medical herbs.

D4  Labrang Monastery to Shachong Monastery

In the morning you’ll have chance to watch Tibetans burning fragrant plants to worship God and purify air. Join them for two forms of the most popular local exercises: prostration and kora, along the world's longest prayer wheel corridor, to release diseases and karma.

Afterwards, a three-hour drive will take you to Shachong Monastery, located on a mountain top in Qinghai province. A magnificent view of sunset on the snow mountain range and the Yellow River can be appreciated from its medical school.

D5   Shachong Monastery

Nowhere is better than Shachong Monastery to observe and ponder on the connection between Medicine and religion in Tibet, because of its unworldly position, and the special status as the original monastery of Tsongkhap, the most prominent Master of Tibetan Buddhism.

Spend the day witnessing the daily life of a Tibetan monk in the medical school, and learn how important the self-cultivation is for a Tibetan doctor, to have compassion and dedication for patients.

D6   Tibetan Culture & Medicine Museum, Xining

The tour concludes at the Tibetan Culture & Medicine Museum in Xining, the only museum of its type in the world, to give you an overview of Tibetan Medicine.

D7   Return home from Xining
