Day 1: Arrival to winter wonderland

You will be picked up from Kuusamo airport in the afternoon for a half-hour drive to your adventure camp for the week in the countryside of Kuusamo. You will be welcomed with a homemade lunch complete with our favorite local foods followed by a gear check to ensure you have everything you will need to enjoy the week. You can test out your gear on a short kicksled tour of the area and warm up after with your first introduction to Finnish Sauna culture, complete with a refreshing roll in the snow.

Day 2: Igloo building and ice fishing

It’s time to play in the snow as you start to build your own igloo! After breakfast, you will work as a team to start the base – a huge pile of snow which we will let freeze and harden until tomorrow. In the afternoon, you will have the chance to try your luck ice fishing on one of the nearby lakes while you admire the beauty and silence of Finnish nature. After settling in for the evening, you will gain a deeper understanding of Finnish culture by watching a film about Finland.

Day 3: Finishing the igloo, winter olympics and night in the igloo

This morning, you will finish your igloo followed by an afternoon special-edition Winter Olympics. Be prepared for lots of laughs! You will also have some free time to relax or explore the area surrounding the adventure camp on your own. After dinner, we will have a housewarming party for your new igloo and the most adventurous of you will have the chance to sleep the night in the igloo. You will stay plenty warm with our four-season sleeping bags.

Day 4: Full-day snowshoeing adventure in the wilderness

Today is an adventure deep into the wilderness. After breakfast, we will pack our backpacks for a full-day, guided snowshoeing adventure far off the beaten path. You will be walking in deep snow with the help of special shoes designed to keep you on top while admiring the snow-covered forest. With all this activity it will be important to stay well-fueled! We will be sure to bring our favorite local snacks and enjoy a camp lunch in the silence of nature.

Day 5: Visit to a reindeer farm and free time in Ruka Ski Center

Reindeer herding is an important part of life in Northern Finland, especially for the native Sámi people. Today you will have a chance to visit a traditional reindeer farm, meet and feed the reindeer, and have a chat with the local reindeer herders. This is your chance to ask any questions you may have about this animal of the Arctic to the people who know them best.

In the afternoon, you will have some free time to explore Ruka Ski Center on your own. If you are feeling adventurous, you can go downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling or on a river floating tour. (All the activities in Ruka are add-ons at an extra cost and will require advance booking.) If you are looking to relax, you can spend the afternoon with a good book and a cup of coffee in one of the cafes and restaurants or do a bit of souvenir shopping.

Day 6: Cross-country skiing

It is time to experience one of Finland’s favorite winter sports: cross-country skiing. Your guide will show you the basics during your first ski lesson (or share some of their favorite tips if you are already an experienced skier). After fueling up at lunch, you will be ready for a relaxed afternoon skiing tour through beautiful fields, forests and lakes.

Day 7: Time to say goodbye and transportation back to the airport
