Day 1: Medina of Tangier - Medina of Tetouan - Drop off in Chefchaouen for the 1st night

Upon meeting you, you will be welcomed by your tour guide having at your disposal a comfortable, Wi-Fi fitted air-conditioned, private vehicle for a ride that will take you first from Tangier’s bay, if the pick-up is from the port, up to the city center through Boulevard Mohamed V, Avenue Pasteur, and then Place De France. The ride will continue until you reach the main entrance of the Medina: Bab Fahss.

Once there, you’ll be immediately immersed into the historical heritage and the cultural prosperity of Tangier’s old town: the Medina. You will feel as if you have time-traveled back several centuries to a medieval time when the community still operates according to ancient norms and traditions. Hammams (public baths), communal ovens, fountains, squares, craftsmen, markets and cafes are all still working and remind us of a glorious era of Tangier.

The walking tour of the Medina will let you have a direct contact with the friendly locals; and by strolling down the Medina’s labyrinthine alleyways, the tour will take you through the most important landmarks of the city such as the Grand Socco, the Petit Socco, and the Kasbah. You will also visit monuments that are considered as architectural masterpieces decorated with mosaics, ornamental stucco, and wood carvings such as the Great Mosque, Dar El Mekhzen located in the Kasbah, and the American Legation, which is the only American national monument located outside of the United States, and the place of a large library specializing in North Africa, many paintings from Americans, Europeans and Moroccans, and several small models recreating some historic battles. The real bonus there is the “Paul Bowles” wing, named for the American author who called Tangier home for 50 years and died here in 1999.

You will have plenty of opportunities to stop for lunch (own expense) during the Medina tour before heading to Tetouan, just ask your tour guide for suggestions, he will escort you to the type of restaurant you prefer.

After a 1 hour drive from Tangier you will arrive to Tetouan, La Paloma Blanca. You will go on a walking sightseeing tour through the old town, The Medina, which is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site.

Start your tour of Tetouan from place Moulay El Mehdi or “Plaza Primo” as the locals still call it. In fact, the place was formerly known as “Plaza Primo de Rivera” and it was the heart of Tetouan’s extension outside the walls of the Medina during the colonial era. After sightseeing the nearby cathedral, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Victoria, you’ll continue your way through the cobbled Mohamed V avenue, passing by the Spanish consulate and the Edifício Fénix, until you reach place Feddan where the royal palace is located. You’ll then enter the Medina through Bab Rouah gate.

Within Tetouan’s Medina unique network of shaded alleyways, you will go through the Mellah (the Jewish quarter) which once was called Little Jerusalem, then the old fish Market, the Kasbah, Tarrafin alley, multiple Souks and squares, the Great Mosque, and many other key monuments of the city.

Upon request and if open, the tour could include visits to places like Issac Ben Walid Synagogue, Palace Bricha, Dar Senaa, the ethnographic museum, the archaeological Museum, Palace Bricha, and Tetouan’s tanneries.

After 1h30 drive from Tetouan, the drop off will be at your accommodation in Chefchaouen.

Day 2: Medina of Chefchaouen - Volubilis (Optional) - Drop off in Fez for the 2nd night

Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a small Kasbah (fortress) by Moulay Ali Ibn Rashid Al-Alami, a descendant of Abd As-Salam al-Alami and Idris I, and through them, of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Al-Alami founded the city to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco. Along with the Ghomara tribes of the region, many Moriscos and Jews settled here after the Spanish Reconquista (Inquisition) in medieval times.

The city’s blue palette drives its origin from that same era. Arriving Jewish exiles painted their houses blue to reflect their divinity — a tradition that continued through the centuries. It wasn’t until recently that the blue shades spread out of the Jewish quarter (the Mellah) to the other parts of the Medina (the old town) making it the “Blue Pearl” we know today.

Once in Chaouen, as it’s called locally, you will immediately absorb the Berber, Moorish, and Andalusian vibes while exploring the maze of its alleyways with our experienced local guide. The tour starts by entering through one of the Medina’s gates, usually Bab El Ain or Bab Souq, or by going straight to Demnat Majzen square. Chaounis are very friendly, you’ll be often invited to have a chat on a cup of mint tea and therefore learn from them a bit about their lifestyle.

If you happen to be in Chefchaouen on a Monday or a Thursday, you’ll definitely be taken to visit the Souq. During these days the farmers of the neighboring Rif valley come down to the streets of the Medina to sell their products. This can vary from fruits and vegetables to handmade crafts and mountain herbs.

By strolling down the Medina’s labyrinthine alleyways, the tour willwould take you through the most important landmarks of the city such as the Kasbah and its Museum, Hawta square, Ras El Maa, the Great Mosque, and the bustling Outa El Hammam main square. After a break for lunch, your tour guide will escort you to the Spanish Mosque, or Bouzafaar Mosque, to take in the breathtaking view over Chefchaouen from the outside.

After 3h30 drive from Chefchaouen through Ouazzane and Souk Larbaa, the drop off will be at your accommodation in Fez.

Day 3: Medina of Fez - Drop off in Rabat for the 3rd night

After a pick-up at your accommodation in Fez, start out on a guided tour of the medina, one of the largest walled-in cities in the world.

You’ll enter the Medina through Bab Boujloud, one of the ornate gates which welcome travelers into the old town. You’ll visit monuments such as Medersa Bou-Inania and El Attarine, (two prominent Koran schools), and the University and Mosque of Karaouine. Admire the harmonious geometrical details which adorn these magnificent buildings. Learn about traditional artisan work at the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts. See where artisans employ techniques passed down from generation to generation in order to make tools, carpets, furniture, and musical instruments.

After a lunch break at one of the hundreds of phenomenal restaurants in the Medina, make your way to one of the city’s famous tanneries. Observe the workers from a lookout and see how leather has been processed for centuries. Talk with a tanner and get in-depth insight into the different steps of the tanning process.

Venture outside the Medina where the Royal Palace lies, and walk through its large plaza lined with palm trees. End your tour with a trip to the Bab Fettouh cemetery, where you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the city, the hills, and the expansive sky.

Day 4: Tour of Rabat – Tour of Casablanca – Drop off in Rabat for the 4th night

The old Medina is Rabat’s most atmospheric district, and it’s best explored on a walking tour. Enter through the grand Bab El Had gate, stop to admire the Grand Mosque and Moulay Slimane Mosque, and spend some time in the souks. Quieter and less touristy than the famous souks of Marrakech or Fez, Rabat’s souks still offer options, with dozens of stalls selling carpets, leather goods, spices, and handicrafts—put your haggling skills to the test to secure a bargain.

Stop At: Kasbah of the Udayas, Lot Abtal Numero 37 Temara، Rabat 12000, Morocco
On your visit to Rabat’s medina, take a few steps farther north to explore the 12th-century Kasbah of the Udayas, the city’s oldest quarter, which was built during the Almohad dynasty. Also called Kasbah les Oudaias, the tightly packed neighborhood has evolved through the centuries, with many of its signature, whitewashed and blue-based houses built by Moorish refugees from Spain during the 16th century.

Today, there are many highlights to behold during a visit to Rabat’s wall- and tower-surrounded Kasbah. Entrance through the grand 12th-century Almohad gate of Bab Oudaia hints at the discoveries to come, including a walk down the neighborhood’s main street Rua Jamaa and past the city’s oldest mosque, El Atiqa; a visit to the palace-located Museum of Oudayas; and especially the unparalleled views of the river and sea (and inviting shoreline), best taken in from the various terraces.

Stop At: Mausoleum of Mohammad V, Boulevard Abi Regreg, Rabat 10030 Morocco
Across from Rabat’s sky-reaching and unfinished Hassan Tower, sits an equally visit-worthy structure, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. The building was constructed between 1962 and 1971 on the order of the late King Hassan II for his father, Mohammed V. Now it is the resting place of not only its namesake but also his sons, including the one who commissioned it. The exterior is simple yet stunning, with a green-tiled roof; the building’s entrance protected by handsomely dressed royal guards.

The interior, on the other hand, exudes nothing but royalty, featuring marble floors, and walls of elaborate mosaics, and gilt and carved wood. The tombs, which are situated on the lower level, are the centerpiece, and can be viewed from the balcony above. There’s more than just the mausoleum to see here too; visitors should plan to explore the entire grounds of Yacoub Al Mansour Square, which is home to not only Hassan Tower, but also the remains of an ancient, never-completed grand mosque.

Day 5: Medina of Assilah – Hercules Caves – Camel Ride – Cap Spartel – Final drop off in Tangier

If you’re familiar with Greek mythology, you might remember the 12 Labors of Hercules. In fact, Lixus (near Larache, south of Tangier) is rumored to be the basis for Hercules’ Eleventh Labor, the apples of Hesperides or the golden apples. It was after he retrieved the golden apples that it is thought Hercules rested where your next destination is: Hercules Caves. The myth has persisted long enough to make from the sea grotto the attraction number one in Tangier.

Stop At: Achakkar Beach, Tangier, Morocco
Afterwards, a drive along the Atlantic coastline to the south of Cap Spartel will get you to Achakar beach, on the sands of which you will meet the camels. You can ride those lovely animals, which is completely safe for you and for them of course, or just enjoy their company and take some memorable photos with them, it’s your call.

Stop At: Cap Spartel, 14km west of Tangier, Tangier Morocco
Your next stop will be Cap Spartel, the most North Western point of mainland Africa and also the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The lighthouse of Cap Spartel tops a promontory and gloriously guards the entrance of the Straits of Gibraltar since 1864. Limitless opportunities of photos are to be seized in Cap Spartel.
