This morning your guide will pick you up at around 5:30 am from your hotel for a roughly eight-hour drive to Soti Khola. For the first four hours, the road is sealed up to Dhading Bensi, the district headquarters of Dhading (1050m). From Dhading the road to Arughat is quite rough and bumpy going. From Arughat we will drive for another hour and a half until we come to Soti Khola where we will stay overnight at a guesthouse.

Today we follow a mule track and ascend on an impressive path cut into the face of the cliff and then head down to Lapubesi (880m). We need to exercise caution on this stretch. We then continue to Nauli Khola, crossing a suspension bridge and then follow the trail alongside the Budi Gandaki River before arriving at Machha Khola (900m), a place where many trekkers were stuck after the earthquake in 2015 and had to be rescued, We will stay at a guesthouse tonight.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Machhakhola To Jagat (1,370M) Duration 6-7 Hours.
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 4: Machhakhola To Jagat (1,370M) Duration 6-7 Hours.

Today we follow the trail next to the river to Khorlabesi and the hot spring at Tatopani (meaning hot water) (930m), and then continue along the eastern bank of the Budi Gandaki River to Doban, Thulo Dunga and Yara Bagar (1370m). The trail zigzags and frequently crosses the river over suspension bridges before we come to the entrance gate to Manaslu Conservation Area and Jagat (1410m) - with its distinctive flagstone village square. Sherpa Expedition & Trekking will check that the route is passable, and may suggest we take an alternative route along a much higher path on the east side of the river before descending to the old trail near Doban. We will stay at Jagat tonight.

The trail ascends to Salleri and Sirdibas before reaching Philim. The countryside becomes little by little more desolate as the trail winds past several waterfalls until we reach a crossroads at Ekle Bhatti where the trail leads to Lokpa - a village on the trail to the Tsum Valley. We then climb above the junction of the Buri Gandaki and Shar Khola Rivers and continue on to Pewa and then Deng (1860m) where we will stay the night. Many villages here suffered extensive damage in the 2015 Nepal earthquake.

Today we follow a trail above the Tom Khola (river) to Longa Chuta before arriving at an enchanting fir and rhododendron forest filled with birds and Langur monkeys on the north side of the Buri Gandaki River. We cross back to the other side of the river before coming to Namrung (2660m) that was a previous customs post in the days when this was a route for transporting salt from Tibet. Namrung is another village that suffered extensive damage from the 2015 earthquake, but today it has been rebuilt.

  • Day 8 Day 8: Acclimatization Day At Samagaun.
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 8: Acclimatization Day At Samagaun.

Before we head higher we need to get acclimatized for a period of at least one day. Health authorities recommend that you stay active and not just sit idle. Today we will explore the Gompa at Pugyen (4070m), a one day hike that leaves the trail between Syaula and Sama. It is also possible for us to carry on up this valley to the rough terrain of the Pugin Glacier. Another option is we trek to Birendra Tal (lake - 3450m) and then a tough climb up to Manaslu Base Camp (4900m). It is believed that to the north of Birendra Tal is Milarepaโ€™s Cave (famous Buddha) that he used as a meditation retreat.

  • Day 9 Day 9: Samagaun To Samdo (3,865M) Duration 3-4 Hours.
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 9: Samagaun To Samdo (3,865M) Duration 3-4 Hours.

Today the trail heads uphill and back to the Buri Gandaki River and passes the junction of Birendra Tal and Manaslu Base Camp. The valley then widens before coming to Kermo Khadka and then continues to the white Kani Gateway that signals the entrance to Samdo (3860m). If we have time we will trek to the peak above the village for striking views of Mt. Manaslu. If we need to further acclimatize there is a 6 to 7-hour trek of 640m up to the moraine of the Fukang Glacier where you will have expansive views toward several passes used by locals to cross over into Tibet.

It is possible you will see Himalayan blue sheep on the trail leading to Dharamsala (4480m). This is as high as we go today without risking possible altitude sickness. This is also the last safe refuge before reaching the pass. This leg of the trek is often subject to snowfall between mid - December to mid -March when snow regularly blocks access through Larkya-La Pass. Samdo Lodge is usually closed in winter months. Your guide will know beforehand if the lodge is closed.
