Itinerary of your trip 7-Day Namibia Highlights From Windhoek

  • Day 1 Day 1: Windhoek
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 1: Windhoek

I will meet you early in the morning at your accommodation or, alternatively, at the airport. We will travel north via Okahandja to Otjiwarongo, which is a convenient stop en route to the north of the country. The name Otjiwarongo originates from the Otjiherero language and means "place of the fat cattle".

Next, we will leave for our next destination, the mining town of Tsumeb. Here, we will refuel our car and then continue our journey through a beautiful landscape, making a short stop at Lake Otjikoto. This lake is known for a unique museum that was established in the year 1915.

From here, a short trip will take us to our first overnight stop at the Mokuti Etosha Lodge, situated just outside the entrance to the Etosha National Park. The lodge is located on its own 4000 hectare private property and offers two restaurants and bars, a fitness center, curio shop, swimming pools among other features.

Dinner is served in one of the restaurants and the evening is at leisure.

Overnight: Mokuti Etosha Lodge - Dinner

  • Day 2 Day 2: Off To Okaukuejo Camp
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 2: Off To Okaukuejo Camp

After a sumptuous breakfast, we will set out for a game drive in Etosha National Park en route to our next destination, the Okaukueja Camp in the South of the park.

We will enter the park through the Von Lindquist Gate and from now on can only drive at 60 km /h, as the speed limit is restricted inside the park.  We drive our way through Etosha to Halali camp, situated in the middle of the park. Along the way, we visit several waterholes and are awardded with splendid game viewing as we have the best chance to spot a few new species that are not normally seen on the Namutoni side of the park.

We stop at Halali for a rest and a leisurely lunch. Post lunch, we will have some time to visit the Halali waterhole and to make use of the swimming pool and other bar facilities before continuing the journey. The Okaukuejo waterhole is probably one of the most renowned waterholes in the park. The illuminated waterhole next to the camp, offers game enthusiasts a tremendous opportunity to view large herds of elephant, black rhino, lion, cheetah, brown hyena, Burchells and Hartmanโ€™s mountain zebra, gnu and numerous antelope species.

Enjoy the dinner, which is usually served buffet style, after which there is time to watch variety of animals at the flood-lit waterhole, before we retire for the night.

      Dinner and breakfast included

  • Day 3 Day 3-4: Okaukuejo Resort โ€“ Swakopmund
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 3-4: Okaukuejo Resort โ€“ Swakopmund

We begin our journey south with a relatively short drive to the small town of Outjo.

From here we continue our journey to Khorixas in the heart of Damaraland. We will need to refuel our car before we travel on gravel road via the small mining town of Uis to arrive in Henties Bay late in the afternoon.

Here, we can get our first taste of the cold Atlantic Ocean at the beautiful clean beach.

After a short break, we continue to Swakopmund. It is Namibiaโ€™s premier seaside town and a very popular beach resort preserved with excellent German colonial architecture. It was founded in 1892 as the main harbor for German South-West Africa. Swakopmund has a very pleasant climate but early morning fog patches over the town is a regular occurrence. Temperatures never reach high degrees and cool evenings are the norm.

Overnight stay at the accommodation in Swakopmund.

After breakfast, we have a full day to relax in Swakopmund. We can explore the town which has many superb shops, walk on the beach or visit the museum and the Namibian National Marine Aquarium.

Alternatively, there are various optional activities that can be arranged. These include aeroplane and microlight flights over the desert, scenic drives, fishing trips (both from the beach or in a boat), four-wheel motorcycle (quad bike) trips into the desert and over the sand dunes around Swakopmund, sand boarding trips, skydiving, a catamaran tour in nearby Walvis Bay and many others.

Tonight, we take the chance to sample local cuisines at one of the excellent restaurants. The seafood in Swakopmund is superb. We recommend the ultra German "Brauhaus" or in the landmark restaurant "Jetty 1905" which is situated about 270 meters on the jetty in the ocean.

Overnight stay in Hotel Deutsches Haus (Breakfast included).

  • Day 4 Day 5-6: Swakopmund โ€“ Sossusvlei Lodge
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 5-6: Swakopmund โ€“ Sossusvlei Lodge

This morning, we travel to the neighbouring harbour town of Walvis Bay and exit via the gravel plains of the Namib Desert and Kuiseb and Gaub Canyons to the tiny settlement of Solitaire. We will stop here for a light lunch, before we continue to the Namib Naukluft Park. We cross some open savanna grasslands and farmlands before the terrain gives way to the immense red sand dune desert of the Namib.

We arrive at the lodge in the late afternoon but right in time to watch the colours glow and change on distant mountains in the east.

We check in and freshen up as and now we have the opportunity to go on a nature sundowner drive or relax at the sundowner deck before we head off for our dinner on the "Al Fresco Terrace" overlooking the flood-lit waterhole.

Overnight stay in Sossusvlei Lodge (Dinner and breakfast included).

Have an early breakfast and the start for an exciting morning trip to Deadvlei and Sossusvlei Pan. Drive for abourt 61 kms to reach the 2 x 4 parking area passing Dune 1 and the famous Dune 45 along the way. From here, we drive a further 5 km to reach the Sossusvlei Parking area. Sossusvlei is where you will find the iconic red sand dunes of the Namib. The clear blue skies contrast with the giant red sand dunes to make this one of the most bewitching natural wonders of Africa and a photographerโ€™s heaven. Please note these 5 km can only be driven with 4 x 4 vehicles.

Having visited the Sossusvlei Pan, we drive back to the Deadvlei parking area from where we will take a 1.1 km walk to the Deadvlei. Physically fit travelers can enjoy this walk via the "Big Daddy" dune.

We spend the morning in and around Sossusvlei and Deadvlei and on our way back, we visit the famous Dune 45. This dune is famous for its elegant shape, which โ€“ along with its position close to the road โ€“ has earned it the distinction of โ€˜most photographed dune in the worldโ€™. If youโ€™re not keen for the strenuous hike to the top of Big Daddy, Dune 45 is a more forgiving alternative, standing at only 80 meters and featuring a much gentler gradient.

By now, it will be time to escape from the heat and return to Sesriem for lunch and some rest.

By late afternoon, we will take a short excursion into the Sesriem Canyon. The Sesriem Canyon is the second most important tourist attraction in the area after Sossusvlei. It is a natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab River in the local sedimentary rock, about a kilometer long and up to 30 meters deep. The name Sesriem is Afrikaans and means "six belts", which was given by settlers on the Dorsland Trek who had to attach together six belts (made of oryx hides) in order to let buckets down into the canyon to scoop up water.

On our return to the lodge, we will enjoy a sundowner on the terrace of the lodge before we go for our dinner and retire for the day.

Overnight: Sossusvlei Lodge (Dinner and breakfast included).
