Swayambhunath:
Swayambhunath, also known as monkey temple, is believed to be existed since 2,000 years ago but the present complex was built after the 14th century. Swayambhunath means โthe Shrine Existing by itselfโ. The temple is often called the โThe Monkey Templeโ by travelers as there are numerous monkeys scampering around the place and playing around the stupa making it livable and interesting place.
Swayambhunath is majestically perched on hill with grand display of Kathmandu city and surrounding hills. Legend has it that Kathmandu valley used to be a huge lake and there was huge lotus flower with a white glow in the middle of the lake. Buddhists believe that Manjushree, a Bodhisattwa, came from China and cut the mountain to drain out the water and the lotus flower came to rest where the present stupa is existed now.
Travelers should climb the long staircase that goes uphill to Stupa. As we reach the main shrine, we can see many shrines and statues of Buddhist and Hindu deities side by side showcasing the religious harmony between them.
Kathmandu Durbar Square:
Located about 2km south of Thamel, Kathmandu Durbar Square is the heart of the city. Locals call this site โHanuman Dhokaโ which is dedicated to the Monkey God, Hanuman. At the main entry point to the palace, you can witness statue of Hanuman in a red pain.
Kathmandu Durbar Square is an ancient royal palace of Nepal and itโs interior art is believed to date back to the 9/10 century, during the tenure of King Gunakama Dev โ A true devotee of lord Kali (the goddess of destruction).
The Durbar houses ancient but lavish royal palace and plethora of temples dedicated to different Hindu god and goddess. Until 19th century, this palace served as the royal seat for Nepalโs king. Now, the palace was converted to museum for visitors and coronation place for the kings of Nepal.
Another major attraction of Kathmandu Durbar Square Tour is the Living Goddess โ The Kumari, a young girl who is worshiped as goddess after rigorous selection test. She acknowledges the greetings of visitors from her windows. The surrounding of temple complex dates back to 15th century to the 18th century.
Pashupatinath:
The sacred Hindu Temple, Pashupatinath, is dedicated to the supreme God โ Shiva. It is famous world heritage site and lies to the bank of holy river, Bagmati. The temple dates back to 5th/6th century and most important Shiva Shrines and all devotes of Hinduism must visit the site at least once in their lifetime.
During the Maha Shivaratri Festival, thousands of devotees flock here to worship the stone Linga in the form of Shiva. Non-Hindus are strictly prohibited to enter the main complex but one can still view the two-tier pagoda style temple from the viewpoint located to the eastern bank of river. You can witness the cremation process of Hindus on the platforms along the Bagmati River. It is the heritage not to be missed during your day tour in Kathmandu.
Boudhanath:
Boudhanath refers โThe Lord of Wisdomโ and the biggest Stupa of Nepal. It is most important site to visit during Kathmandu valley sightseeing tour. The Stupa date backs to 5th century and there are different legends connected to its establishment. The stupa was built to restore the water as there had been twelve years of drought on the kingdom. So it also called Dew Stupa.
Boudhanath lies on trading route of Tibet; traders traveling to & from Tibet stops here and offer prayer to the stupa and ask for the blessing of the safe journey and return. The complex is also named as mini-Tibet as you can see Tibetan influenced Buddhism here.
