Day 12: Angkor Wat: The Most Famous Temple Complex In Southeast Asia (B)

On this day you will get to know the most important architectural legacy: the Angkor Wat. It is world-famous and the most important sight in Cambodia. The pyramid temple was painstakingly built between 1113 and 1150 and is one of the most impressive buildings in the world. It is a masterpiece of architecture. With it, artistic hands created a symbol of the Hindu cosmos. In the 15th century, the Khmer abandoned the elaborate sandstone buildings and historians still do not know the reason for this. It was not until the French colonial power discovered the extensive temple complexes in dense jungle landscapes around 150 years ago. It is a unique treasure of human history that looks particularly magical at sunrise and sunset. The huge Angkor area also includes the Buddhist Preah Khan temple, which was built in the middle of the 13th century. It is relatively well preserved and is surrounded by a dense jungle. This scenery alone is worth a visit. Due to its ornamentation, however, the Hindu temple ruins of Banteay Srei are a jewel within Angkor. It dates back to the middle of the 10th century and is rather small in comparison to other temples. All these magical buildings from times long past will transport you to another world. When the sun goes down in the early evening, you can watch its enchanting play of colors from one of the historic temples. There could hardly be a better way to end the day.

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 13: The Impressive Temples Of Angkor (B)

Around one kilometer north of Angkor Wat is the Angkor Thom area, which is about 10 kmยฒ in size. At the end of the 12th century, King Jayavarman VII decided that this should be the new capital. At the time, it was larger than any medieval city in Europe. On this site you will find some of Angkorโ€™s most famous sights. You enter via the monumental South Gate and marvel at the mysterious statues of gods and demons. Further on, you will come to the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, where religious ceremonies were once held. Dramatic depictions carved in stone still bear witness to this today. You will visit the ruins of Baphuon, the royal palace and the temple pyramid of Phimeanaka. You will then explore the magic of the Bayon Temple, which has impressive reliefs and whimsical face towers. Finally, you reach the next attraction: Prasat Kravan. This is a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and dates back to 921. Its reliefs, which have been carved directly into the walls, are particularly noteworthy. Next on the agenda is the Buddha temple Banteay Kdei, whose outer walls measure 500 x 700 meters. You will also be amazed by the Srah Srang water reservoir, in which there is a small island in the middle. A wooden temple once stood there. Other highlights of Angkor await you on this day. The Ta Prohm temple is a good example of how tropical trees have reclaimed the area. They overgrow the time-honored stones, giving you a good idea of how Angkorโ€™s European explorers must have felt back then. Ta Keo is the first monument on the site to be built entirely of sandstone. It is dedicated to the goddess Shiva and was commissioned by Jayavarman V, who ruled between 968 and 1001. The Chau Say Tevoda and Thommanon temples date back to the 12th century. Overnight stay in Siem Reap including breakfast the next morning
