16-day Private Trip: Birding At The Edge Of The Tibetan Plateau From Lanzhou

Highlights:
• Aneynangchem, the habitat of half species in Gansu Province.
• Bumozhi (Four Maiden’s Mountain), the home to 300 varieties of birds.
• Lhagha, “Mountain of God’s favorite” with enchanting views and unknown species.
• Labrang Monastery, the most comprehensive Tibetan Monastery University.
• Zhagana, a primitive Tibetan village set in a tranquil valley, visited by Joseph Rock, who called it “Birthplace of Adam and Eva”.
• Langmusi, “Oriental Switzerland”, splendid monasteries on the backdrop of snow mountains and forest.
• Danba Beauty’s Valley, ranked as "one of the most beautiful villages in China".

D1. (Labrang) You'll be introduced to some local birds including red-billed Chough and wild ducks, before visiting Labrang Monastery.

(Labrang) A guided tour in the mountains around the monastery will let you get familiar with local birds. Time permitting, drive to Ganjia Grasslands to see cliff and valley nearby, which is home to vultures overseeing a sky burial site.

(Mt. Amnye Nangchem) The habitat of over 130 varieties of birds, such as goshawk, lammergeier, snow cock and Blue eared Pheasant. Overnight in mountain-foot Tibetan village. Head to Dayugou on the second afternoon.

(Dayugou) Various water-capes are home to unknown species. Tibetan costumes are as colorful as birds’ feathers.

Luchu) At the crossroads to Gahai Lake and Dzitsa stone forest, both are bird-rich areas, home to horned lurk and Redshank.

(Zhagana) Mountains around

  this pristine Tibetan village are good places for either hiking or birding

D9/10. (Mt. Lhagha) Visit King Gesar’s footprints, plus unexpected species, as it is out of the beaten track of ordinary birders.  

 

D11. (Village Boyu) A long and steep road leads you to the village hidden in Kan mountain, to search for rare species.

D12. (langmusi) Go birding along enchanting trails, afterwards indulge yourself at a café, or hunt for souvenirs in local shops

D13. (Danba Beauty’s Valley) On the road to Mt. Bumozhi, we’ll pass this valley with stunning stone houses and watch towers.

D14/15. (Mt. Bumozhi) Two days exploration in the beautiful snow mountains may not be enough to get to know its 300 or so species, but is guaranteed to  be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. 

D16. (Chengdu) A feast of Sichuan cuisine with famous hotpot gives this journey a perfect ending.
