Guide

All group trips are accompanied by one of our group leaders. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Premium leaders are Intrepidโ€™s most experienced, with in-depth knowledge and extensive local networks to make it a trip of a lifetime. Your leader will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense, you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious, and social aspects. At Intrepid we aim to support local guides who have specialised knowledge of the regions we visit. When not already included in your trip, your leader will be able to recommend a local guide service who can share more detailed or specialised information at specific sites should you be interested in delving deeper.

Hygieneprotocol

All Intrepid travellers 18 years and older and Intrepid leaders will be required to be fully vaccinated. Travellers must provide proof of vaccination to the leader at the group meeting on day 1 of the trip. All children 5 and above must provide proof of vaccination, proof of recovery or a negative COVID-19 test. Any high-risk customer who is unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons can apply for an exemption. Exemptions will be assessed on a case by case basis. Customers must provide a medical certificate from a medical professional.

Accommodation

The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation. Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if weโ€™re arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isnโ€™t always possible which means we wonโ€™t be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available. OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION: The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances. TWIN SHARE BASIS: Accommodation on this trip is on a twin/multishare basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. Please note there may be times where facilities will be shared rather than ensuite and rare occasions when you share a room with passengers travelling on different Intrepid trips than your own. CHECK-IN TIME: Throughout the trip we request that our hotels prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if weโ€™re arriving prior to normal check-in time. However this isnโ€™t always possible which means we wonโ€™t be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination. PRE/POST TRIP ACCOMMODATION: If youโ€™ve purchased pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (if available), you may be required to change rooms from your trip accommodation for these extra nights. FACILITIES: Your accommodation may not always have private en suite facilities or air-conditioning. European hotels generally donโ€™t provide kettles or fridges. • Day 1 Day 1: Venice
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 1: Venice

Buongiorno! Welcome to Italy. Your adventure begins in the floating city of Venice. Youโ€™ll be collected from the airport and transferred to your hotel by car and water taxi, where youโ€™ll meet your leader and fellow travellers for a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive early, thereโ€™s plenty to explore among the bridges, towers, piazzas, canals, churches and gondolas โ€“ practically unchanged for 600 years. Maybe walk to St Markโ€™s Square and the Basilica, Dogesโ€™ Palace, Accademia Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs. After the meeting tonight, join your leader and group for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. Venice is famous for seafood and fresh Veneto vegetables โ€“ perhaps try some fritto misto (a mix of fried seafood) or risotto with asparagus.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Postojna Caves / Ljubljana / Bled
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 2: Postojna Caves / Ljubljana / Bled

Say farewell to Venice this morning and travel to the Postojna Caves, where youโ€™ll take some time out for lunch before exploring. A network of 20 km of passages, galleries and chambers, Postojna is the largest classic karst cave in Europe. Begin with a 2 km open-top train ride through narrow tunnels into the jungle of stalactites and stalagmites. In the vast chambers the electric lighting allows you to admire the size and splendour of the underground world, and your leader will explain the geology of these natural wonders. Continue to Ljubljana โ€“ a city full of style and sophistication. When you arrive, take a guided tour around the Old Town and earn about the cityโ€™s history as you visit Ljubljana Castle, the Town Hall, Cathedral of St Nicholas and the Dragon Bridge. Youโ€™ll also visit the open market under arcades before continuing to the lake side town of Bled.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Lake Bohinj / Bled
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 3: Lake Bohinj / Bled

This morning youโ€™ll drive through the misty Sava Bohinjka Valley to beautiful Lake Bohinj โ€“ the largest permanent natural lake in Slovenia. Take a cable car to the top of Mt Vogel, where youโ€™ll be greeted by views of evergreen woods sloping down the mountains to blue waters. Take some time to enjoy the area before returning to Bled โ€“ renowned for its mild, healing climate and thermal lake water. Have lunch at a local restaurant, then take a Pletna boat ride (a wooden, awning-covered boat rowed by a special oarsman) to the island on Lake Bled and climb up the 99 steps to St Maryโ€™s Church. Enjoy a free evening where you can seek out the famous Bled cream cake (nearly every cafe and cake shop in town claims that theirs is the best).

  • Day 4 Day 4: Motovun / Rovinj
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 4: Motovun / Rovinj

This morning, drive to Motovun โ€“ sitting on the top of a cone-shaped hill surrounded by the bountiful Mirna River Valley, whose forests are famous for truffle hunting. The medieval charm of the town is still found in its well-preserved architecture. Today, youโ€™ll have the chance to sample the delectable local product during a truffle tasting combined with fritaja (Croatian omelette), a local speciality. Your sommelier will pair your tasting with suitable Istrian wines to try, such as the famous Malvazija. Continue to the romantic Croatian town of Rovinj โ€“ one of the best-kept towns on the Adriatic Coast. Among Rovinjโ€™s qualities is the beautiful, architecturally intact Old Town and its venetian-style St. Euphemia Church. Tonightโ€™s accommodation is set on a private island just a short boat ride from Rovinj. Away from the pressures of the mainland, the hotel makes the most of its scenic setting, with calming views at every turn.

  • Day 5 Day 5: Plitvice
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 5: Plitvice

Today, make the most of a late morning before heading to Rastoke โ€“ a historical mill village on the banks of the river Korana. When you arrive, you have the option to head out on a leisurely walk with your leader to get your bearings. Then, the rest of the afternoon and evening is free.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Plitvice Lakes National Park / Zadar
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Plitvice Lakes National Park / Zadar

Today, youโ€™ll explore one of Croatiaโ€™s most beautiful sites โ€“ Plitvice Lakes National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a fairy-tale land of wooded hills, turquoise lakes and waterfalls. Enjoy some time to discover the parkโ€™s trails โ€“ your leader will recommend the best routes to suit your interests and outline the parkโ€™s rules. After your memorable visit to the lakes, drive to the walled city of Zadar. Take an afternoon sightseeing tour of the city with a local guide. Learn the ancient history of the Roman Forum built in the first Century and St Donatusโ€™ Church. Visit the reconstructed Romanesque St Grisigonoโ€™s Church, St Maryโ€™s bell tower, St Anastasiaโ€™s Cathedral, and the Peopleโ€™s Square. Lastly, you will visit the Three and Five Wells Squares. There is also an opportunity to visit the Gold and Silver Museum. In the late afternoon, top off the day with a sunset drink overlooking the bay.

      Day 7: Zadar

The day is yours to continue to get to know Zadar. There are a number of excellent museums to visit including the Museum of Church Art, the Archaeological Museum and the National Museum. Donโ€™t forget to visit the famous โ€˜Greeting to the Sunโ€™ and the โ€˜Sea Organโ€™, two of the more modern sights of Zadar. The latter is a man-made organ on Zadarโ€™s Riva that works with the motion of the waves and 35 pipes to create a musical soundscape. You could also visit the vibrant fish markets of this port town, take a dip in the clear coastal waters, or explore the cafe culture and do some people watching. If Plitvice whetted your appetite for waterfalls, take an optional tour to Krka National Park.

Visit St Jacobโ€™s Cathedral, a 15th-century jewel thatโ€™s UNESCO-protected, before taking some time for lunch. Continue to your final destination of Split. This is Croatiaโ€™s second-largest city in the heart of the Dalmatian coast, set on the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea against a backdrop of coastal mountains. Check into your Feature Stay accommodation โ€“ a boutique hotel with centuries of history (it started its life in the 1700โ€™s as the first cafe in Split!), situated on the most beautiful square in the city.
