This tour includes:

Accommodation

GENERAL ROOMING CONFIGURATIONS: Family of two - All family groupings of two will be put into a twin room. Family of three - Wherever possible we will put you in a triple room. Please be aware that in a handful of places triple rooms are in short supply. This means that, in practice, a triple room will often simply be a twin room with a mattress on the floor or a further bed squashed in. Where it is impossible to provide a triple room, you will have to decide which of your party takes the single room. Family of four or more - You will most likely stay in two twin rooms. If and wherever possible we will aim put you in a quadruple room. Whilst we will do our very best to ensure that families are roomed close together (in some cases, we can arrange adjoining rooms), we canโ€™t guarantee this. Most family holidays occur during peak season and we sometimes have little to no control over where you will be put. You need to come prepared for this. PERU Due to local energy supply and infrastructure issues, please be prepared for some cold showers while travelling in Peru. Hotel (6 nights), Jungle Eco-Lodge (2 nights)

Guide

All Intrepid Family trips are accompanied by one of our group leaders. The aim of the group leader is to assist your family to take the hassle out of your travels and help you have the best trip possible. Your leader will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for fun things to do and see - for both kids and parents, recommend great local eating venues that will even get the kids trying new things, and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the countries visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects. Our leaders are not babysitters on this trip - we leave that to you (the experts), but they will make sure that group members of all ages are able to explore their destination safely and with as much fun as possible. Our group leaders are not responsible for looking after children at any time and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times throughout this itinerary.

Insurance

Insurance is not included. Travel insurance is required for this tour. Please make sure you are adequately covered. If you require travel insurance, TourRadar has partnered up with World Nomads to provide a hassle-free experience. More information can be found here (https://www.tourradar.com/travel-insurance). Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips for those travelling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. If you are travelling within your home country or region please confirm before travel that you are entitled to access the public medical system easily should an accident occur. We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international trips, you will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance and the insurance companyโ€™s 24-hour emergency contact number has been sighted by your leader. If you have credit card insurance your group leader will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number rather than the bankโ€™s name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country. Travellers who reside within the European Union or Switzerland receive basic international health insurance, so travel insurance is not mandatory under European Union Law. However, as this does not cover situations such as emergency rescues, private health care, or repatriation to their home country, comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. European Union or Swiss travellers who decline travel insurance when travelling outside of their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting.

Optional

Other activities and services not included A selection of optional activities that have been popular with past travellers are listed in the day-to-day itinerary. This isnโ€™t an exhaustive list and should be used as a guide only for some of what might be available. Prices are approximate, are for entrance only, and donโ€™t include transport to and from the sites or local guides unless indicated. All activities are subject to availability, and maybe on a join-in basis. It may not be possible to do all the activities listed in the time available at each destination, so some pre-planning for what you are most interested in is advised. When itโ€™s recommended that travellers pre-book these activities, look for a note in the Special Information section of the day-to-day itinerary. For most, they can either be organised independently on the day, or let your leader know you are interested in the Group Meeting and they can assist. Where activities are considered medium or high risk, we work with operators whose safety and credentials we have sighted and assessed. Although it is possible that you may find the same activity cheaper with another operator on the ground, we cannot vouch for the safety or quality of that operator. Medium and high-risk activities not listed above have not been assessed by us and as such our staff and leaders are unable to assist you with organising these activities. Activities that contravene our Responsible Travel policies are also not listed. Please remember that the decision to partake in any activity not listed is at your own discretion and risk.

      Day 1: Lima

Bienvenidos! Welcome to Lima, Peruโ€™s capital and one of South Americaโ€™s most charming cities. As thereโ€™s little time spent here but so much on offer, you and your family may like to arrive a few days early to see all the sights, including the chic suburb of Miraflores, Central Park and Loversโ€™ Park. Maybe check out some of the many museums or take a short trip out of town to visit Pachacamac, an impressive archaeological site. On the first day of your trip thereโ€™s a welcome meeting at the hotel at 5 pm, after which you can get to know the other families and your leader over an optional dinner at a nearby restaurant.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Amazon Jungle
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 2: Amazon Jungle

Take a flight to Puerto Maldonado via Cusco this morning, where the mighty Amazon Jungle awaits. Hop in a motorised canoe and head upriver to your jungle lodge in the Madre de Dios area โ€“ donโ€™t forget to look out for wildlife along the way! After checking into your accommodation, join your leader for a short walk through the jungle to your traditional Amazonian archery lesson. There, youโ€™ll discover how the local indigenous community craft and use their bow and arrow. You and your family can have a go at hitting the targets before heading back to the lodge for a hearty dinner. After dark weโ€™ll return to the river by boat in search of caimans and other nocturnal creatures.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Amazon Jungle
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 3: Amazon Jungle

Start the day with a big breakfast before embarking on a hike through the jungle to Tres Chimbadas Lake. Look out for colourful macaws, hoatzins, monkeys and black alligators. If youโ€™re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of an endangered river wolf (otter)! Head back to the lodge for a rest, play and some lunch. This afternoon youโ€™ll visit a traditional medicine garden where the shaman of the community will introduce you to some plants used for healing. You and your family will have the opportunity to go to the laboratory and observe how the medicines are prepared. After dinner tonight your leader will take you on a walking tour in search of insects, amphibians, tarantulas, bats, birds and (the shy) armadillo. Listen out for the sounds of the jungle and notice the stars peeking through the trees.

  • Day 4 Day 4: Cusco
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 4: Cusco

Transfer by boat back to Puerto Maldonado this morning and collect your bags. From here, take a short flight to Cusco and arrive in the early evening. Tonightโ€™s plans are up to you. You might like to take a walk around the delightful old city, visiting the Inca walls of the Plaza de Armas or some of the many fine churches around town, or grab dinner and relax with your new friends. Whatever you choose, be sure to take it slow as you adjust to the cityโ€™s high altitude (3450 m).

  • Day 5 Day 5: Cusco
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 5: Cusco

Take an orientation walk through the city with your leader this morning. Along the way youโ€™ll meet up with a local musician who will show you and your family around San Blas, the artisansโ€™ neighbourhood. Learn about the significance of music and art in Peruvian culture and history, visit their home and have a go at playing traditional drums, strings and wind instruments. Youโ€™ll also be shown how to make and play your own zampona, a traditional panpipe, which you can take home with you. The rest of the day is yours to explore. Perhaps head to the local market and pick up some pastries for a picnic lunch. Or, if youโ€™re keen to brush up on your knowledge of Peruvian history before visiting Machu Picchu, why not check out some of Cuscoโ€™s excellent museums? Youโ€™ll have a full Boleto Turistico (tourist ticket) which means you can access the best attractions in town. If youโ€™re still feeling adventurous you might like to climb to the top of the Inca Pachacuti Statue and enjoy the city views.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Ollantaytambo
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 6: Ollantaytambo

This morning, drive through the Sacred Valley. Known as Wilcamayo to the Incas, the valley has been a source of livelihood for the locals for hundreds of years. Youโ€™ll see maize crops covering the terraced walls and the sacred river beneath. Stop in at the Andean community of Ocotuan, located near the beautiful Piuray lagoon. There, youโ€™ll learn about traditional textile techniques and how local women are using them to support their families. Your kids will also be able to feed llamas, alpacas and guinea pigs. Sit down for a lunch with the community, then continue to the Maras Salt Ponds, where Inca built terraces to harvest the salt from the springs. Next is a stop at Moray, where Inca built huge circular terraces to plant different crops at the optimum altitude. Finally, continue to the town of Ollantaytambo. To finish off the dayโ€™s adventures, you might like to check out the townโ€™s fascinating archaeological siteโ€ฏโ€“ ancient remnants of an Inca city with views over the present-day settlement.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Ollantaytambo
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 7: Ollantaytambo

Start early this morning and board a train towards Aguas Calientes, a modern town in the cloud forest at the foot of Machu Picchu. The train ride will offer some unbelievable views of the Andean scenery. Then, take a short bus ride up the winding road to Machu Picchu. The โ€˜Lost City of the Incasโ€™ was built around 1440 AD as a country retreat for Inca nobility, but thereโ€™s evidence that the land had been a sacred Inca site for much longer. Itโ€™s true purpose may always be a mystery since no records of the complex exist. Explore the upper terrace with your family first, then take a tour of the ruins with a local guide, learning more about these 200 or so houses and temples. Catch the bus back into Aguas Calientes and enjoy some spare time to have lunch and a look around. Later, board the train back to Ollantaytambo and perhaps join your group for an optional dinner.

  • Day 8 Day 8: Cusco
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 8: Cusco

Enjoy a slow start to the morning with your family, then hop on a transfer back to Cusco. Arrive just after midday, and enjoy a final free afternoon. You might like to take the family to the stunning Plaza de Armas โ€“ the heart of the city, flanked by ornate churches โ€“ or the Coricancha Temple, once the most important temple in the Inca Empire. Or, you could simply take the time to sit back and relax. Later, you might like to join your group for an optional farewell dinner.

  • Day 9 Day 9: Cusco
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 9: Cusco

Your trip comes to an end today, and there are no activities planned. If youโ€™d like to stay longer in this archaeological hub, just speak to your booking agent.
