Jai Singh, an avid astronomer and visionary monarch, strategically selected Jaipurโ€™s location for its competitive advantages in trade and defense. In accordance with Hindu town planning principles, the city was divided into nine rectangular sectors, or chokris, which symbolize the nine divisions of the universe. Initially known as "Jai Singh Pura," it was subsequently renamed "Jaipur." A thriving arts and crafts industry, which encompassed gem cutting, jewelry making, block printing, and miniature paintings, was the result of Jai Singhโ€™s invitation to experienced artisans, craftsmen, and merchants from across India. Jaipur is currently a shopping sanctuary.
