Day 5: Trek To Chele (3100M/10171Ft)

From Kagbeni, the trail immediately ascends to a ridge marked by a small stone chorten before descending and climbing over another ridge. After several more ups and downs, we climb to Tange, where we get our first view of the distinctive black, white, and red chortens typical of Upper Mustang. About an hour beyond Tangbe, we reach Chhuksang (2980m), located at the confluence of the Narshing Khola and the Kali Gandaki. Across the Kali Gandaki from Chhuksang, you can see striking red organ-pipe cliffs above some inaccessible caves. We cross the Narshing Khola and continue north, navigating several ups and downs before descending to the riverbank near a massive red conglomerate that has fallen from the cliffs, creating a natural tunnel through which the Kali Gandaki flows. The trek then leaves the Kali Gandaki valley and ascends steeply up a rocky gully to Chele (3100m/10,171ft). Overnight at a tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 6: Trek To Shyangmochen (3800M/12468Ft)

The trek from Chele ascends a steep spur to a cairn, offering a view of Ghyakar across a vast canyon. Ghyakar is surrounded by a long wall of packed earth encircling its fields. The climb continues as a challenging, treeless, and waterless ascent, switchbacking up the steep canyon before traversing to a cairn marking Chele La. Crossing this ridge, the trail enters a large side valley and descends gradually to Samar (3620m), which is surrounded by a grove of poplar trees. From Samar, the trail climbs to a ridge, descends sharply to a stream, and then ascends to a chorten. The path then moves to another valley, crosses a stream, and climbs to the Bhena La at 3830m. The route skirts a gorge, crosses another stream, and climbs slightly to Yamdo. We then ascend to the Yamdo La at 4010m before descending to Shyangmochen (3800m/12468ft). Tonight, we will stay at a tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

  • Day 7 Day 7: Trek To Ghemi (3510M/11516Ft)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 7: Trek To Ghemi (3510M/11516Ft)

From Shyangmochen, we start with a gentle ascent to the Shyangmochen La at 3850m, where the trail enters a broad east-west valley. Descending past a large painted square chorten, we get a view of Geling and arrive at a trail junction. We take the right fork and descend to the charming village of Geling (3570m), known for its poplar trees and expansive barley fields.

Continuing from Geling, the trail heads westward and climbs gently through fields in the center of the valley, passing below Tama Gaon and its impressive chorten. Turning north, the route merges with the road and becomes a steep climb across the valleyโ€™s head to the Nyi La (4020m). From the pass, we descend gently for about 45 minutes to the Ghemi La, marked by a cairn on a ridge top. The trail then steeply descends to the whitewashed buildings of Ghemi.

Overnight at the tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

  • Day 8 Day 8: Trek To Tsarang (3575M/11730Ft)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 8: Trek To Tsarang (3575M/11730Ft)

Ghemi, the third largest village in Lo, is surrounded by vast fields. From the upper part of the village, the trail to Drakmar and Lo Gekar heads west. It descends past the striking blue, grey, and red cliffs across the valley to a steel bridge over the Tangmar Chu. The path then ascends past what is possibly the longest and most impressive mani wall in Nepal. After passing the mani wall, the trail climbs a rocky gully before traversing to the Choya La (3870m). Beyond the pass, it descends gently past a prayer flag and meanders across fields to Tsarang. Overnight will be spent at a tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

  • Day 9 Day 9: Trek To Lo Manthang (3840M/12599Ft)
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 9: Trek To Lo Manthang (3840M/12599Ft)

The trail descends about 125 meters from Charang, crosses the Tsarang Chu, and follows a path to a cairn on a ridge opposite the village at 3,580 meters. From there, it enters the Thorung Valley. The dirt road turns north, gently climbing to a large, isolated chorten that marks the boundary between Tsarang and Lo. The road crosses a stream and becomes a wide thoroughfare, traveling across a desert-like landscape in varying shades of grey and yellow.

From the Lo La (3,950 meters), youโ€™ll enjoy a view of the walled city of Lo Manthang. A short descent leads to the plain of Aspiration, after which the trail crosses a stream and climbs onto the plateau of Lo Manthang (3,840 meters/12,672 feet). Youโ€™ll cross an irrigation canal at the southern wall of Lo Manthang before reaching your tented camp for the night. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

  • Day 10 Day 10: Explore Lo Manthang
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Day 10: Explore Lo Manthang

With its handful of temples and the Kingโ€™s palace in town, along with several notable sites in the surrounding area, Lo Manthang offers plenty to explore over a couple of days. As the highlight of this trek, we dedicate ample time to fully experience Lo Manthang.

To the west of Lo Manthang are two valleys. The western valley features Tingkhar, Phuwa gompa, and Namgyal gompa. Namgyal, perched atop a desolate ridge, is the newest and most active gompa in Lo Manthang, following the Gelug tradition.

To the north of the town, youโ€™ll find the ruins of two castles on adjacent hills. The castle on the higher hill was once the palace of Ame Pal, the founder and king of Mustang. On the lower hill are the ruins of the queenโ€™s round castle, which now serves as a sky burial site.

Overnight will be at a tented camp. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

  • Day 11 Day 11: Trek To Ghar Gompa
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 11: Trek To Ghar Gompa

The trail to Lo Gekhar is not the main trading route and is interspersed with herder trails, making a local guide especially helpful. The path ascends steadily to a cairn marking a pass at 4000 meters, where youโ€™ll get a final view of Lo Manthang. Continuing, the trail reaches a ridge at 4070 meters, where a large cairn indicates a pass into a side valley. We then ascend to the head of this valley and cross the Chogo La at 4325 meters, the highest point of the trek.

From here, the trail descends steeply to a wooden bridge over the Tsarang Khola, then climbs past an unpainted stone chorten and crosses a swampy meadow to reach Lo Gekhar. Ghar Gompa, a small monastery nestled in a grove of large trees, is named โ€˜house templeโ€™ due to its house-like structure with small, separate rooms. Youโ€™ll spend the night at a tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

We begin by climbing to a ridge, then crossing a valley to a cairn and a pass at 4,170 meters. The route continues through alpine meadows to a crest before descending a steep, eroded gully beneath striking red rock towers to reach the upper part of Drakmar. From Drakmar, the trail follows a stream past the stone walls and fields of the extensive village, then climbs to a ridge with a chorten at 3,710 meters. After descending to another stream, we make a brief climb to the upper part of Ghemi. We then descend to the lower section of Ghemi and retrace our steps, climbing to a cairn on the Ghemi La before contouring upwards to the Nyi La at 4,020 meters. Finally, we descend steeply into the Geling Valley. Overnight at a tented camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

The trail then traverses past a Mani wall, leading to the three houses of Tama Gaon at 3,710 meters. Following this, a steep series of switchbacks descends through a rocky canyon to a stream, after which the trail climbs to a massive painted chorten before rejoining the Geling trail near the ridge, just below the Shyangmochen La. Finally, we retrace our steps through Yamdo and Bhena to Samar, and then descend to Chele. Overnight will be at a tented camp. Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.
