The ups and downs can be a bit monotonous, but there are several streams along the way that offer a chance to cool off. The trail eventually leaves the forests and passes through a grassy slope high above the river. Continue trekking until we reach Sulighat and spend a night.

Weโ€™ll then descend through birch forests to the upper reaches of the Phoksundo Khola and continue to the picturesque Ringmo village, known for its mud-plastered chortens and mani walls. Today is a rest day for acclimatization at Phoksundo Lake. You can take a short hike to the nearby village of Ringmo and visit a Tibetan Buddhist monastery. These walks offer a great opportunity to experience the local culture. The Dolpo people often wear homespun clothing, sometimes dyed maroon, and favor Tibetan-style boots called somba or dhocha, with upturned toes. Both men and women commonly wear religious amulets and strings of coral, amber, and turquoise. You will spend the night at Phoksundo Lake.

Day 9: Trek To Phoksundo Khola (4-5 Hrs)

The journey continues along the trail that circles the western end of Phoksundo Lake, following a rocky ledge along its western bank. This precarious path, suspended on a gangway of wood supported by pegs driven into crevices in the rocks, highlights the remoteness of the area we are about to enter. At the westernmost edge of the lake, the trail leads through a lush meadow, opening into the flood plain of the Phoksundo Khola. We then walk through the valley, crossing the river and avoiding occasional boggy marshes, before arriving at the riverbank where we will set up camp for the night.

Begin by walking for about an hour along a level path through a glacial valley, heading due north. Youโ€™ll reach the confluence of the Phoksundo Khola and another mountain stream, where an old wooden bridge stands. From there, head northeast. A long climb will bring you to a sheep meadow, where the trail veers up a steep ravine. A challenging ascent to the top leads to another valley, where youโ€™ll see the Kang-La pass. Set up camp near the pass at a spot named โ€™Snowfields Campโ€™ by Peter Matthiessen. During todayโ€™s trek, youโ€™ll also enjoy views of Chhamlang Peak 6 (6,739m) and Peak 7 (6,105m).

From the summit, youโ€™ll be rewarded with stunning views of the expansive valley carved by a rushing river. Descend on a steep trail to the valley floor, then follow a winding path along the riverbanks, crossing the river multiple times. Youโ€™ll pass by mud caves nestled in the hills and meadows where yaks graze, along with hundreds of sheep and domestic mountain goats (Chyangra). After crossing a charming log bridge, youโ€™ll arrive at the Shey Gompa compound, where youโ€™ll spend the night.
