  • Day 1 Day 1: Fly From Kathmandu To Bhadrapur & Drive To Illam 7-8 Hours.

      Day 1: Fly From Kathmandu To Bhadrapur & Drive To Illam 7-8 Hours.

      This afternoon we will take a flight to Bhadrapur and then we will drive to Illam where we will stay overnight. Illam is well known for its tea and is often referred to as โ€œThe Tea Capitalโ€.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Drive From Illam To Ranipool & Trek To Sukathum (1,576M) 7-8 Hours.

      Today we have a road trip to Ranipool and then we trek to Sekathum. Firstly we have to cross a bridge over the river that originates at the Yalung Glacier. We then head across a ridge before coming to the Ghunsa Khola Valley. We will then continue until we come to the junction of the Tamur and Ghunsa Khola (rivers) and camp beside the river at Sekathum.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Trek From Sakathum To Amjilosa (2490M) 5-6 Hours.

      After leaving Sakathum we head northeast alongside the banks of the Ghunsa Khola and then climb up to Kanchenjunga Base Camp. The trek takes us across an bare landscape and has a steep ascent to the Tibetan village of Amjilosa where we will stay overnight.

      The trail today heads through rhododendron and bamboo forests as we head higher and come to a huge waterfall on the side of the river that is like a signpost pointing to the route we take to Gyable where we have unbelievable views of the surrounding countryside.

      Leaving Gyable the trail passes through a large meadow, a small village, and over a hill from where we descend and cross the river before reaching Gunsa Village, a fairly large Tibetan Buddhist village with its customary wooden houses, a school, health post and its very own hydro-electricity power plant. The village is located within the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and has quite a few Gompas (Buddhist monasteries) where travelers meet, relax and chat about their journey. Tonight we stay in Gunsa, the very last village in the valley.

  • Day 6 Day 6: Acclimatization Day At Ghunsa.

      Ghunsa is a perfect location, and at a high enough altitude, for us to acclimatize before heading higher. It is strongly recommended by health professionals that for the period of the acclimatization period we stay active. To stay active we will trek across the river and to 400 metres above the village, about a 4 hour return trek. For the remainder of the day we will stroll around this charming Tibetan village, chatting to the locals and observe their way of life in such a remote area.

      After leaving Ghunsa we follow the trail for five to six hours through fragrant pine and rhododendron forests along the south bank of the Ghunsa Khola and its many chortens and Mani walls. We will follow the trail across several slopes and glacier moraines until we arrive at Kambachen, a tiny Tibetan village with only a few houses, but surrounded by mountains. Tonight we stay in this quaint village.

  • Day 8 Day 8: Exploration And Acclimatization Day At Khambachen.

      This will be our second day allocated to acclimatize. From here we have some magic views of Khabur (6332m), Phole (6645m), Jannu ( Kumbharna) (7710m) and of Sarfu Himal ( 6000+m peaks). We may choose to trek to Nupchu Pokhari where we will have some more stunning views of the Himalayas or trek to Jannu (Khumbarnakarna) viewpoint from where we can see Mt. Jannu, Phole and other huge snow-covered mountains. This evening we will take a short hike to a ridge just north of the village to capture the sunset over the mountains. 

  • Day 9 Day 9: Trek From Khambachen To Lhonak (4780M) 4-5 Hours.

      After arriving at the source of the Ghunsa Khola, we trek along the north side of the Kanchenjunga Glacier and then follow the trail along a flat terrain past the Lhonak Glacier until we come to Lhonak. At this elevation the air is crisp and cold, but we are compensated with awesome views of Wedge peak, Mera peak, Nepal peak, and Twins, that will leave you spell-bound!. Tonight we stay at Lhonak.

  • Day 10 Day 10: Trek From Lhonak To Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (Pang Pema) (5140M) 3 Hours.

      Day 10: Trek From Lhonak To Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (Pang Pema) (5140M) 3 Hours.

      Today we trek in an easterly direction staying close to the Lhonak Glacier on the northern ridges until we arrive at Kanchenjunga Base Camp (Pangpema Peak) which is an excellent photo opportunity. After this amazing experience, we then return to Lhonak for the night.

  • Day 11 Day 11: Trek From Kanchenjunga North Base Camp ( Pang Pema) To Khambachen (4050M) 6-7 Hours.

      Leaving Lhonak we head back to Kambachen where we will stop for a lunch break while taking in the fantastic view of Mt. Kanchenjunga. We then continue on to Ghunsa and then to Kambachen for the night.

  • Day 12 Day 12: Trek From Khambachen To Ghunsa (3,410M) 5-6 Hours.

      Waking up early we will capture images of the sunrise over Mt. Janu (Kumbakarna), Sobi, Ghabur, and Phole. The trail the takes us through a pine forest and past waterfalls until we come to Ghunsa Village where we will stop for lunch. We will have time today to explore this gorgeous village.

      Today we descend to Phale, home to several monasteries and juniper forests until we come to a grassy hillside and the tiny village of Amjilosa.

      This morning we head out on the trail to the Ghunsa River and pass many black cardamom fields until we arrive at Sakathum. This is our last day on the trail.

      This morning we will have a short 15-minute walk to the jeep station at Ranipool. We have a scenic drive through the terraced hillsides and past several picturesque villages until we come to Taplejung where we will stop for lunch. We then continue to the tea capital of Nepal, Ilam. 

  • Day 16 Day 16: Drive From Illam To Bhadrapur And Fly Back To Kathmandu.

      This morning we will wake up to the multitude of tea plantations around us. Today is a rather sad day as we leave this amazing region and fly back to Kathmandu. On arrival at Kathmandu, we will take you back to your hotels in Thamel. You will have time to relax and celebrate the completion of this awesome adventure to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.
