  • Day 3 Delphi - Arachova - Athens
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Delphi - Arachova - Athens

Today, we will explore Delphi: A History of the Center of the Ancient World. In the 6th century B.C., Delphi was the religious center and symbol of unity of the ancient Greek world. We will visit the tholos of the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, the Ancient Theatre of Delphi, the Treasury of the Athenians, and the Ancient Gymnasium of Delphi.

We will also visit the Castalian Spring fountain, which was the sacred source of Delphi, as its water played an important role in the cult and procedure of the temple and the oracle.

Last but not least, we will visit the Temple of Apollo, the most important building in the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi (which, according to the ancient world, was considered the center of the earth). This temple was the symbolic hub of the entire complex and contained within it the omphalos, the mysterious belly-button stone, said to be the stone swallowed by Cronus in the belief that it was his son Zeus.

It was also the place from which Pythia, the oracle priestess, spoke. Apollo was the "seer," and Pythia was a vessel through whom Apollo spoke. Finally, we will visit the Archaeological Museum of Delphi, one of the most important museums in Greece, which includes exhibits from the history of the Delphic sanctuary. You will have lunch in the Delphi area or at the traditional Village of Arachova, where you can taste the traditional cheese, Arachovaโ€™s formaela, in various forms, before we return to Athens.
