Day 3: Kremlin & Armoury. Departure to Yekaterinburg

Today we dip into the past with our guided tour of the Kremlinโ€™s grounds and cathedrals. The fascinating Armoury Museum is housed in a building thatโ€™s stored weaponry for over five centuries and has been a museum since 1813. It contains such exhibits as the chalice of Yuri Dolgorukiy, Boris Godunovโ€™s armour, Fabergeโ€™s fabulous eggs, and a plethora of golden and silver works of art.

Inside the Armoury Museum, marvel at such treasures as Faberge's fabulously decorated eggs, the chalice of Yuri Dolgorukiy and weaponry dating back centuries.

We'll head underground to explore some of Moscow's beautiful metro stations. Decorated with marble, mosaic, stained glass and bronze sculptures, you'll agree they're more like museums than part of a transit system.

Day 4: Arrival in Yekaterinburg. Transfer to the Hotel

Day 5: Ganina Yama & Cathedral on the Blood. Europe-Asia Border. Departure to Siberia

Our guided sightseeing programme in Yekaterinburg includes a moving visit to the Memorial Cathedral on the Blood in the name of all Saints, which was built on the site of the execution of the last Russian Tsar Nikolay II and his family. From there, we'll take you to Ganina Pit, an orthodox monastery where the imperial remains were initially interred and to seven wooden churches in the heart of a centuries-old pine forest.

Stop At: The Obelisk on the Border Between Europe and Asia, Moskovskiy trakt 17 km, 2, Yekaterinburg Russia
Finally we make an excursion to an obelisk marking the boundary between Europe and Asia where traditionally tourists drink champagne. En route, we pause at the memorial honouring the victims of Stalinโ€™s repressions of the 1930s to 1950s.

Day 8: Arrival in Irkutsk. Transfer to Listvyanka village and Lake Baikal. Free Time

Stop At: Lake Baikal, Lake Baikal, Siberian District
The train to Irkutsk takes three days, but itโ€™s a good opportunity to experience the Trans-Siberian as it should be enjoyed. Rest in your comfortable compartment as you travel sedately through the Russian steppe. Converse with your companions and others taking this popular long distance service. Your guide will be at the train station to meet you. Together, youโ€™ll journey to Listvyanka, a charming little village on the shore of Lake Baikal, the worldโ€™s deepest lake as well as the largest body of fresh water by volume. Youโ€™ll enjoy some free time. Weโ€™d recommend a visit to the Baikal Lake Museum, or a walk to see the St Nicolas Russian Orthodox Church. The market is also characterful. Make sure you hop on board a cruiser for a quick jaunt on the lake itself.

Day 9: Wooden Architecture Museum in Taltsy. Exploring Irkutsk

Stop At: Taltsy Museum, Baykalsky highway 47km, Taltsy 664518 Russia
Youโ€™ll return to the city dubbed the Paris of Siberia this afternoon, calling in at the Wooden Architecture Museum in Taltsy on the way. It occupies a sweet spot on the banks of the Angara River, deep in the forest. A plethora of iconic wooden structures can be found here, including a Russian fort, a Shaman yurt and a 15th century watchtower. Your guide will fill you in on the lifestyles of the Buryat and Evenk people. Back in Irkutsk thereโ€™s an included city tour. Youโ€™ll find the architecture splendidly diverse, from huge stone townhouses to diminutive wooden cottages with fretwork shutters.

Day 10: Departure to Mongolia

Transferring to the railway station, we leave the warm hospitality of the Siberian Russians and start our trip to Mongolia by comfortable train.

Day 11: Arrival in Mongolia. Enjoy Terelj National Park

Our guide will meet you at the railway station for your transfer to Terelj National Park. Soon after leaving the Mongolian capital we find ourselves at the gleaming 40 metre tall statue of Chinggis Khaan (Genghis Khan) on horseback, currently the largest equestrian statue in the world. Visitors climbing to the horse's head are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Day 12: Ulan Bator City Tour. National History Museum

Day 13: Horse or Camel Riding. Visit Ovgon Temple

Stop At: Bayan-Olgii Province, Bayan-Olgii Province
While many travellers depart Mongolia in haste, keen to push on to Beijing, those who linger a while are rewarded with some fascinating sights. Itโ€™s a 175 mile drive to Bayan Gibi, but when you arrive late this afternoon, thereโ€™ll be time to try horse or camel riding amid the Mongol Els Sand Dunes. Weโ€™ll squeeze in a visit to Ovgon Temple before returning to base and overnighting in a traditional felt tent known as a ger.

Day 14: Visit Karakorum. Erdene-Zuu Monastery

Stop At: Erdene Zuu Monastery, Kharkhorin 62090 Mongolia
Itโ€™s a relatively short hop to Karakorum, where youโ€™ll enjoy a tour of the 16th century Erdene-Zuu Monastery. It was built to be one of the countryโ€™s biggest monasteries but was almost destroyed in the 1930s, a casualty of spreading Communism.

Day 15: Enjoy Hustai National Park

Stop At: Hustai National Park, Ulaanbaatar 13 Mongolia
This morning youโ€™ll enjoy an early breakfast at base camp before setting off back to the Mongolian capital. En route, weโ€™ll make a detour into Hustai National Park, also known as Khustain Nuruu National Park. The parkโ€™s well known for its population of Takhi horses, reintroduced in the early 1990s. Other fauna inhabiting the park includes deer, boar, ibex, foxes, marmots and lynx. Departing the park, weโ€™ll make our way back to UB arriving late afternoon.
