Begin by admiring the Basilica of San Domenico, home to the relic of Saint Catherine. Explore Sienaโ€™s medieval streets and historic buildings, including Rocca Salimbeni, the oldest bank in the world, and Palazzo Tolomei, Sienaโ€™s oldest private palace. Visit Palazzo Chigi Saracini, now the Accademia Musicale Chigiana.

Admire Piazza del Campo, known for the Palio horse race, and end the tour at the Siena Duomo. Inside, see masterpieces by Donatello, Bernini, and Michelangelo, and appreciate its Gothic architecture and intricate decorations.

  • Day 2 Day 2: Small Group Pienza & Montepulciano Tour
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 2: Small Group Pienza & Montepulciano Tour

Be picked up at your hotel at 9.15am by your guide and travel south of Siena on one of the most panoramic routes of Tuscany, through the rolling hills of the Crete Senesi. Enjoy brief stops along the way for photo opportunities before visiting a quaint and non touristic medieval hamlet to meet the locals while enjoying a coffee. Continue driving along this stunning landscape and reach the UNESCO heritage site of the Val dโ€™Orcia, where you can see the postcard images of Tuscany with your own eyes. Learn of the sharecropping system and harmonious landscaping that shaped these beautiful, man and nature made hills.

Arrive in the utopian gem that is the town of Pienza, one of the first Renaissance towns to be planned on paper by important ideals and architects of the time, called upon by Pope Pius II, the humanist pope who wanted to rennovate his native town and bring it to new splendor. Explore the Romanesque church of Corsignano or the ideal, Renaissance Cathedral and walk along the scenic route overlooking the valleys below and hills beyond. Spend your time browsing the pretty strees of this little town or some of its many shops of local crafts and products.

After browsing Pienza, enjoy a wholesome and refreshing lunch at a local farm, made mostly from the fresh ingredients grown and produced on the farm. Here you can learn about the making of the famous Pecorino sheep cheese and extra virgin olive oil that is so precious to the area. Visit the farm animals and learn about the lifestyle of the area.

In the afternoon, visit one of the bigger and prouder Tuscan hill towns, Montepulciano, often contended by both Siena and Florence. Browse the streets and recognise the influence of both Republics in this townโ€™s art and architecture. Look over the ledge at the amazing landscapes of the Tuscany - Umbrian border.

Visit the main square, Piazza Grande, and explore one of the many old wineries carved out of the ground below the city. This rich and proud town with its many important palaces owned by local, Noble families gave the name to Montepulcianoโ€™s famous wine, the Vino Nobile

After a short walk around town and a brief tasting of the famous Nobile Wine of Montepulciano wine in the company of your guide, enjoy leisure time visiting the townโ€™s many sites, stores and wineries. As you follow the main road down the hill, imagine how hard the โ€œBravio delle Bottiโ€ town festival must be: a competition between the neighborhoods of the town that race wine barrels (that are empty but still heavy and hard to manouvre!) from the bottom of the hill, all the way to the top.

  • Day 3 Day 3: Small Group San Gimignano & Volterra Tour
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Day 3: Small Group San Gimignano & Volterra Tour

Be picked up at your hotel at 9.15am by your guide and travel north into the first Chianti hills. Take a walk into Monteriggioni, a medieval and perfectly preserved fortress with a complete ring of city walls and turrets built in the 13th century and mentioned by Dante in his Divine Comedy: this was once Sienaโ€™s main bastion of defense against the armies of Florence. Enjoy its quiet and charming atmosphere today, browsing the alleys and shops of local crafts and products, or lighting a candle in the local church as the pilgrimโ€™s once did.

Continue to the fascinating town of San Gimignano, one of the most characteristic hilltop towns of tuscany, with its many austere medieval towers that defiantly survived the centuries and are still standing today. Recognized as a UNESCO site of world heritage, this city is a great testimony of medieval architecture. Walk along the ancient route of the Via Francigena, the main route that took all travelers and pilgrims of Europe to Rome and the Holy See. The bustling San Gimignano flourishes with artisanal boutiques of the local trades and stores, selling the towns famous โ€˜red goldโ€™ or saffron spice as well as the Vernaccia white wine, so traditional and old that Dante mentions it in the 13th century.

After working up an appetite browsing squares, streets, churches and stores, visit a small family-run farm and enjoy a wholesome traditional lunch prepared using the farmโ€™s own seasonal products. During lunch you will taste dishes prepared with saffron accompanied by the refreshing Vernaccia white wine.

After lunch, continue on the panoramic roads towards Volterra, the ancient Velathri, a city that harmoniously combines Etruscan and Roman ruins with medieval and Renaissance architecture, with the unavoidable modern buildings and furnishings. Visit a small, artisanal workshop and meet the craftsman that has been working the local alabaster for decades. Witness this ancient art of sculpting this stone into precious masterpieces. Enjoy leisure time walking along the streets of the historical centre, visiting the townโ€™s famous Etruscan museum or simply marvelling at the millennia old Etruscan arch, the Roman theatre or the more modern monuments and shops in town.
