Itโ€™s time to start your Northern Way road trip. Leave the capital city behind and make your way northwards to the most famous megalithic tomb in Ireland โ€“ Newgrange.

This self-drive tour of Ireland begins with an adventure to โ€ฏthe magical stone age passage tomb at Newgrange, richly decorated by megalithic art. It is said that Newgrange predates the Pyramids in Egypt by 600 years! Spend some time learning from your guide about the archaeology, mythology and astronomy of this special landmark.

Perched in the Donegal mountains, Glenveagh castle, gardens and park has so much to offer. The 16,000 hectares of the park includes the Derryveagh mountains, the Poisoned Glen which boasts hills and trails to follow for the afternoon. There are challenging routes for you to enjoy and more relaxed trails to take at your leisure. Why not try the cycle route?

Day 5: Slieve League - Donegal

Stop At: Slieve League Cliffs Near Teelin, Carrick Ireland
You will venture further into the Wild North West today! You will travel south towards Donegal Town we highly recommend you drive over the Glengesh Pass, make a stop at Assaranca Waterfall and the fabulous Maghera Beach and Caves.

Discover the truly breath-taking cliffs of Slieve League, standing at roughly 600 meters. Although less famous than the Cliffs of Moher they stand three times as high and even more magnificent. Choose to hike along the cliffs or find your favourite view for some jealousy inducing photos.

Stop At: Donegal Castle, Castle Street, Donegal Town Ireland
This afternoon is a guided tour of the โ€ฏrestored Donegal Castleโ€ฏโ€“ home of the wealthy and powerful Oโ€™ Donnell Clan.ย ย

Day 6: Sligo - Westport

Stop At: Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery, Carrowmore Visitor Centre, Sligo F91 E638 Ireland
Be inspired as you travel south through county Sligo. Your first stop at Glencar Waterfall is 50ft high and is situated at Glencar Lough beneath the Benbulbin mountain and served as an inspiration to the William Butler Yeats and features in his poem โ€˜The Stolen Childโ€™.

The waterfall is impressive after rain and can be viewed from a lovely wooded walk.

Your next stop takes you to Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery. Carrowmore is a large group of megalithic monuments on the Cรบil Irra peninsula near Sligo, Ireland. They were built in the 4th millennium BCE, during the Neolithic era. There are thirty surviving tombs, placing Carrowmore among the largest and oldest complexes of megalithic tombs in Ireland.

Stop At: Croagh Patrick, Murrisk Ireland
Challenge yourself โ€ฏto โ€ฏclimb Irelandโ€™s holiest mountain .โ€ฏCroagh Patrick โ€ฏis 764 meters high and is a rewarding hike for the experienced and novice alike. At its peak, you will be rewarded with a โ€ฏbreath-taking, panoramic view of the 365 islands of Clew Bay.
