This sprawling metropolis of more than 3.5 million people on the outskirts of Johannesburg is synonymous with South Africaโs turbulent past and its hopes for the future. Soweto is a multi-cultural composite of South Africa today.
The tour will give you a peek into the past โ treading the paths to greatness taken by Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Stand on the only road in the world which honours two recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize.
The afternoon begins with a tour of the main city taxi rank across the road from Baragwanath Hospital. Visit the Mandela Squatter Camp, where youโll see an African merchant of traditional medicines, step inside a typical four-roomed dwelling and meet the locals.
The tour proceeds to Orlando East, the oldest township of Soweto, built in 1933. Drive past schools, kindergartens and various residences to the Childrenโs and Old Age Day Care Centre.
Visit the Hector Petersonโs Memorial Stone, the first victim of the 1976 students uprising, and Freedom Square in Kliptown where the ANC's Freedom Charter was drafted in 1952.
Finally, drive pass Mr Mandelaโs old house where he stayed before he was jailed โ itโs on the same road as TRC Chairman Archbishop Tutuโs house and Winnie Mandelaโs mansion.
