Day 5: Hike To The Legendary Taktsang

After enjoying a satisfying breakfast at your hotel, embark on a remarkable journey to Paro. Your dayโ€™s highlight is the exhilarating Tigerโ€™s Nest (Taktsang) Hike.

Immerse yourself in the pristine natural surroundings as you venture through the breathtaking environment leading to the iconic Tigerโ€™s Nest monastery. As you ascend, prepare to be overwhelmed by the sight of the monastery perched on the edge of a cliff, 900 meters above the Paro valley. This revered site, also known as Taktsang Goemba, is not only one of the holiest places in Bhutan but also one of its most beautiful. Legend has it that Guru Rinpoche, revered as the second Buddha, arrived here from Tibet on the back of a flying tigress, blessing the entire place in the 8th century.

The hike to Tigerโ€™s Nest can be divided into several stages, making it manageable for various fitness levels. The first stage takes you to the cafeteria, which will serve as your lunch spot later today. This portion of the trek, approximately 45 to 60 minutes long, leads to a rocky outcrop across a ravine, offering a distant view of the monastery. Take a moment to savor some tea or coffee, accompanied by biscuits, while marveling at the anticipation of the journey ahead. The second stage entails walking from the cafeteria to the lookout point, situated opposite the monastery. This leg of the hike may take close to an hour. At the lookout, some may choose to capture photos and return to the cafeteria. For those seeking a deeper experience, the next stage involves descending the 475 steps along the cliff face, crossing a stream and a waterfall at the bottom of the ravine. From there, the path ascends with another 300 steps leading to the monastery entrance. Upon reaching this point, youโ€™ll have the opportunity to enter the monastery and witness the sacred cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated (please note that cameras are not allowed inside the monastery).

After the invigorating hike, visit the ancient Kichu Temple, which dates back to the 7th century. Delve into the captivating stories surrounding the templeโ€™s construction, deepening your understanding of Bhutanโ€™s rich heritage. In the evening, you have the option to explore Paro town, with its charming street lined with traditional Bhutanese buildings. Alternatively, take a leisurely scenic walk along the serene Paro River, allowing yourself to be captivated by the tranquil beauty of the surroundings.

This day filled with adventure, spirituality, and natural splendor will leave you with memories to treasure as you reflect on the wonders of Bhutan.
