Moshi To Machame Gate To Machame Camp

After completing the necessary registration at Machame Gate (1800m), the trek begins by following a ridge through the dense montane forest. This area is the most lush on the mountain and is where 96% of Kilimanjaroโ€™s water originates. On sunny days, especially during the dry season, this section is vibrant and beautiful, but it can become quite muddy if it has rained recently.

We pause for lunch at โ€™Halfway Clearing,โ€™ a small break in the trees, before continuing our steady ascent. The slope gradually eases as the forest transitions into giant heather near our next camp, located close to the ruins of Machame Hut (3000m). If the evening clouds clear, we may catch our first closer view of Kiboโ€™s glaciated dome.

      [6-8 hours of walking]

  • Day 3 Machame Camp To Shira Camp
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Machame Camp To Shira Camp

This shorter day starts with a climb up a steep ridge, leading to a small semicircular cliff known as Picnic Rock. From here, youโ€™ll enjoy excellent views of Kibo and the jagged rim of the Shira Plateau, making it a perfect spot for a rest. The trail then becomes less steep as it continues toward the Shira Plateau.

We set up camp near Shira Hut (3840m), which offers some of the most breathtaking views on Kilimanjaro. Youโ€™ll be close to the massive volcanic cone of Kibo, the striking rock formations of the Shira Plateau, and youโ€™ll have a view of Mt. Meru floating above the clouds.

      [4-6 hours of walking]

  • Day 4 Shira Camp To Lava Tower To Barranco Camp
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Shira Camp To Lava Tower To Barranco Camp

Breakfast is served at 7:30 a.m. at Shira campsite before we depart for Barranco campsite. The trek starts by heading east up a ridge via a junction towards Kiboโ€™s peak. As you progress, the trail shifts southeast towards the Lava Tower, known as the "Sharkโ€™s Tooth."

Soon after, youโ€™ll reach a second junction near Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 4600m, before descending to Barranco campsite at 3950m. Even though you end the day at nearly the same altitude where you started, this day is crucial for acclimatization and will help prepare you for the summit push.

    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

      Baranco Camp To Karanga Camp

We take an easy path on compacted scree, offering wide views, as we steadily gain altitude to reach Barafu campsite (4600m) for lunch. Afterward, thereโ€™s a brief acclimatization walk to the plateau at the base of the South-East Valley (4800m).

The rest of the day is reserved for resting and preparing for the final ascent, with an early night to ensure youโ€™re well-rested.

      [4-5 hours of walking]

  • Day 6 Karanga Camp To Barafu Camp To Uhuru Peak And Down To Millenium
    • 12:00 am - 11:59 pm

Karanga Camp To Barafu Camp To Uhuru Peak And Down To Millenium

We will begin our ascent around 1 a.m. using headlamps to ensure we reach the Crater rim by sunrise. The climb is steep and involves navigating loose volcanic scree, with well-graded zig-zags. A steady, deliberate pace will bring us to Stella Point (5735m) in approximately five to six hours.

Weโ€™ll pause here briefly to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. For those still feeling strong, a two-hour round trip along the crater rim will take us to Uhuru Peak (5895m), where you can admire the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that dominate the summit area.

The descent to Barafu is relatively quick, and after a short rest and some refreshment, we continue our descent to our final campsite, Millennium (3800m).

      [11-15 hours of walking]

Millenium To Mweka Hut Camp And Down To Mweka Gate

After your final breakfast on the mountain, weโ€™ll depart from Mweka Camp and begin our descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail can be wet and muddy at these lower elevations.

Once we reach Mweka Gate, our vehicle will be there to transport you back to a hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a hot shower, a relaxing dinner, and a well-deserved overnight stay.
