Day 2: Lisbon City Tour

Stop At: Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon 1250-096 Portugal
Lisbonโ€™s answer to the Champ-Elysee is an elegant boulevard, linking the Praca dos Restauradores in the Baixa district to the Marques de Pombal roundabout and the Parque Eduardo VII. With its central location and grandiose styling locals refer to it as simply 'Avenida'.

Pavement - Avenida da Liberdade - Lisbon
Avenida da Liberdade
Built in the 1880s, the avenueโ€™s multiple traffic lanes are divided by attractive parks and mosaic pavements. A number of statues and monuments can be found along its length, including a memorial to those who lost their lives in the First World War.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Se Catedral, Largo da Se, Lisbon 1100-585 Portugal
Reputed to be the oldest building in Lisbon, the cathedral (Sรฉ de Lisboa) certainly has the appearance of being built to last. Compared to the frivolous Manueline architecture of the Jeronimos Monastery the Romanesque lines of the cathedral appear quite austere. Along with castellated walls and arrow slits in the towers Lisbon Cathedral, like other Portuguese cathedrals of the period, had the appearance of a fortress as much as a church.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, Largo do Monte, Lisbon 1170-253 Portugal
Perched upon a hillside in the Graca neighbourhood, Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, (Our Lady of the Hill), looks out over Lisbon and is the city's highest lookout point or miradouro. With such a position it means it offers uninterrupted 250 degree panoramic views across Lisbon from the stunning old quarters and castle to the downtown district of the city and beyond; it's a perfect opportunity to get some amazing photographs of the landscape and city as well as the Tagus River estuary and the Castle of Saint George.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Santuario Nacional de Cristo Rei, Praceta do Cristo Rei 27A Nรฃo รฉ localizado em Lisboa e sim em Almada, Almada 2800-058 Portugal
The statue of Cristo Rei (Christ the King) with his arms outstretched dominates the skyline of the far bank of the river from Lisbon. From the city it is hard to grasp quite how big this statue is, but it is huge. Set atop a 82m (270ft) plinth the figure of Christ measures nearly 30 metres (100ft) in height. This makes it marginally smaller than the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro and there is no denying the obvious influences.

The pedestal upon which the figure stands is fairly impressive in its own right. It consists of four arches with the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz (Our Lady of Peace) in the centre. Two of the mighty legs of the pedestal contain an elevator system which takes visitors up to the viewing platform at Christ's feet. This is around 80 metres (260ft) up and combined with the elevated cliff top position provides a great vantage point overlooking Lisbon.
Duration: 45 minutes

Stop At: Torre de Belem, Avenida Brasilia - Belem, Lisbon 1400-038 Portugal
The Torre de Belem was built in 1515 to guard the entrance to Lisbon's busy harbour. But the designer (Francisco de Arruda) went far beyond the requirements of a functional fortress and created a Manueline masterpiece decorated with innumerable exquisite decorative flourishes. The stonework features beautiful ornate windows and Moorish inspired turrets along with motifs and sculptures of things as diverse as historical figures and a rhinoceros.

The tower went well beyond its role as protector of the harbour and became something of a national symbol. This is where many of the Voyages of Discovery departed and has long been a welcoming site for returning sailors. Today the Tower of Belem is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage monument.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Padrao dos Descobrimentos Avenida Brasilia Belem, Lisbon 1400-038 Portugal
52 metre high monument on the waterside in Belem. The monument was built to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. It features 33 prominent people of that era

Celebrating the achievements of explorers during the building of Portugal's empire is the Padrรฃo dos Descobrimentos (Discoveries Monument). It represents a ship's prow featuring more than 30 statues of historical figures who played a big part in Portugal's Age of Discoveries. These include King Alfonso V, Vasco da Gama, Pedro Alvares Cabral and Ferdinand Magellan, with Henry the Navigator being the most prominent. On the pavement, just in front of the monument you will find the Mappa Mundi, a giant marble map of the world and important dates in history on the monument.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, Praca do Imperio Belรฉm, Lisbon 1400-206 Portugal
The Jerรณnimos Monastery was built during most of the 16th century in the Manueline style. It was built at a time when Portugal had an empire and was in the mood to show the World its status through a plethora of monuments and palaces

One of the first and definitely grandest example of Manueline architecture to be found anywhere in Portugal; the Jerรณnimos Monastery in Belem is the embodiment of Portugal's exuberance during the Age of Discoveries. This is recognised in by the UNESCO World Heritage monument the monastery received in 1983.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Pastรฉis de Belรฉm., R. de Belรฉm 84 92, 1300-085 Lisboa, Portugal
The best treat in town served in a beautiful cacophony of blue and white decor, is how you might describe this place. Located in the (well worth a visit) riverside suburb of Belรฉm , the Antiga Confeitaria de Belรฉm is the mecca of the Portuguese custard tart lover.

The tart itself (named a pastel de nata) combines a perfectly crunchy pastry shell with an egg custard filling that is neither too sweet, nor too eggy and just the right side of firm. Finer you will struggle to find, and perhaps this is due to the top-secret recipe that has been passed down from master confectioner to his successor since the bakeryโ€™s inception in 1837. Indeed the ingredients are mixed behind closed doors to this day!

โ€ข Lunch: In a Local Typical Restaurant letยดs try the typical Portuguese food.
Today you will discover, Sea bass!

Day 3: Sintra Tour

Stop At: Park and National Palace of Pena, Estrada da Pena, Sintra 2710-609 Portugal
Fairytale castle meets Disney palace set on top of the hill high above Sintra. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the finest examples of 19th century Romanticism anywhere in the world

No visit to Sintra would be complete without spending some time marvelling at the enchanting Palacio Nacional da Pena. This canary-yellow and terracotta coloured former palace is perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the town and is an eclectic mix of different styles of architecture which somehow or other manage to blend beautifully together.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Sintra, Sintra, Sintra Municipality, Lisbon District, Central Portugal
Considered not only one of the wonders of Portugal but indeed of Europe, Sintra is truly a gem. Once the royal town of the country, it now deservedly holds UNESCO world heritage status and attracts hordes of visitors throughout the year. Its unusual geography, nestled in a stretch of hills surrounded on all sides by plain, estuary or ocean, and its subsequent climate, which is perhaps more typical of Northern Europe, create a verdant paradise where ornate palaces lie hidden behind tall trees and walled gardens, history abounds and romantics feel that they have at last found their nirvana.

Hans Christian Anderson found inspiration here, describing Sintra as the "most beautiful place in Portugal" and Lord Byron during his time here christened it his "glorious Eden".
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Quinta da Regaleira, Rua Barbosa do Bocage, Sintra 2710-567 Portugal
Stunning romantic style palace and chapel set in parkland featuring lakes, grottoes, wells and fountains. Built by Carvalho Monteiro at the turn of the century as a private residence the estate was in private hands until it was purchased by the local council in 1997

This lavish, gothic-style mansion, set in equally fascinating grounds is close to the historic centre of Sintra. Known locally as the โ€œpalace of Monteiro the millionaireโ€, the estate was bought by Antonio Carvalho Monteiro, an altruistic, if rather eccentric entomologist with a fascination for all things esoteric. With the help of Italian architect Luigi Manini, he set about transforming the villa and surrounding estate into the intriguing place we see today.

Day 4: Cascais and the Atlantic Coast

Stop At: Cascais, Cascais, Lisbon District, Central Portugal
At the end of one of the suburban train lines out of the capital lies Cascais. This once tiny fishing village has grown in the last century to become the elegant beach town that it is today. Visitors are no stranger to Cascais, having attracted various monarchs over the ages, a summer-dwelling artistic community in the thirties and continued to charm people both Portuguese and foreign ever since.

Despite its proximity to Lisbon and having swelled enormously in size this, the centre of the Costa do Sol, still retains much of the charm of its fishing past and indeed present. The daily catch is still auctioned in the harbourside square and colourful boats still bob in the harbour, their owners often found mending nets on the quay.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Estrada Cabo da Roca, Colares 2705-001 Portugal
The rocky headland of Cabo da Roca , 40 kilometres southwest of Lisbon, has the distinction of being the most westerly point of mainland Europe and the Eurasian landmass and there is a monument here to tell you just that. To make sure you are still in no doubt, certificates to prove you have been here can be bought from the souvenir shop.

The stunning view from the 144 metre-high (500ft) granite cliffs takes in the Serra de Sintra, the big open sky and the crashing waves of the seemingly endless Atlantic Ocean. No wonder it was once thought that this place was at the edge of the world. The overall effect is one of windswept isolation, and for bird spotters there are a wide variety of migratory and sea birds to be seen, roosting amongst the cliffs and rocks just offshore. Some areas are sectioned off for the safety of visitors.
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Palacio Nacional de Mafra, Terreiro Dom Joao v, Mafra 2640-492 Portugal
The Mafra National Palace is an enormous Baroque and Italianized Neoclassical palace / monastery in the otherwise unremarkable small town of Mafra. When it was built in the early 1700s this was one of the largest buildings in Europe. Today it is still one of the biggest palaces in the world.

It was built by King Joรฃo V to celebrate the birth of his daughter. Although it is also conveniently situated close to some of the best hunting forests of Portugal.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Ericeira, Ericeira, Mafra, Lisbon District, Central Portugal
Ericeira, perched on high cliffs some thirty meters above a string of sandy beaches, has benefited greatly from it's location. A small fishing village whose name derives from sea urchins

(Ouricos do Mar) and where shellfish are still reared in tanks that can be seen at the bottom of the cliffs, Ericeira is home to one of the very few natural harbours between Cascais and Peniche. Because of this the small fishing village grew into a major port, with boats leaving to trade with countries as far away as Scotland and Brazil.

Time for Lunch - Meals are your private quality time and they are not included, but our guide will recommend you a good local restaurant

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: National Palace of Queluz, Largo do Palacio, Queluz 2745-191 Portugal
One of the last great Rococo buildings to be built in Europe. The sumptuous 18th century palace was built as a summer retreat for Dom Pedro of Braganza but later became the official royal residence

The Palace at Queluz was built in the latter half of the 18th century from a design by two of the periods most esteemed architects; Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Robillon and the Portuguese Mateus Vicente de Oliveira. Together they created this "Portuguese Versailles" in the Rococo style as a manor house for King Pedro II.
